They took all of xQc's matches, analyzed them with computer programs, and devised a strategy that could counter xQc's open. The scholar's mate was purely a low-stakes gamble on Charlie's (Cr1tikal's) part, because it wouldn't have affected his defense too much. However, Charley knew that xQc has tunnel vision, especially in the opeing, so he exploited that by setting up a defense, while setting up the scholar's mate on the side, just in case it could work. It ended up working because xQc's tunnel vision got the best of him, something that Charley and Naroditsky planned for. So no, this wasn't ALL luck, just a large amount of forethought from Charley and a huge smooth-brain moment from xQc.
