That's right. R9 (OG Ronaldo) uses his skills to actually get past the defender--effective, artistic, creative, spontaneous. R7 uses his to look cool or to impress his fans but it usually doesn't accomplish much. Take for example just look at when r7 does his stepovers, his not in any better position to beat the defender after having done it usually. It's just sorta like a rigid robotic dance to impress thats not functionally integrated into the play. For r9, it's like a flawless dance and a powerful artistic expression.... and yes, it actually helps him get PAST the defender.

R9 had the best peak ever seen in the game, he was the top scorer in holland when the dutch league had the highest UEFA country coefficient, which ranks the collective clubs’ performance of each european leagues. He was also a top scorer in La Liga, which was much stronger than today, and also a top scorer in the HARDEST league EVER (90’s serie A) in the HARDEST and most defensive era in football history (1988-2000, approximately). Back then, the average of goals scored per game was much lower than today, the defenses were paradoxically much better, they played non-defending tactics since occupying spaces wasn’t really a thing as it is today. The offensive and defensive tactics didn’t work in blocks like they do nowadays, there were kilometers of empty spaces between each defender and EVEN SO they managed to concede much less goals than today. CR7 plays is a considerably easier era to be an attacker, scoring 40 goals today is completely different than back in the 90’s.

i saw CR7 play for Manchester when he was young. People here in Brazil were all saying he was just a showman , that he wasnt a true team player and a finisher. Over the years as i follow his carrer he got better and better until even here, his most bitter critics were forced to admit that the guy had TRUE work ethic.
