Great video, and it was interesting that you noticed a difference between shell-on and cleaned. I process all my own crabs for crab cakes (make a few hundred each year from Aug-Oct), and pre-cleaning the crabs makes my job a lot easier later on when I pick all the meat. The only time I leave the shells on is if we're having people over to pick the crabs for eating (let them do all the work). One tip, when pre-cleaning the crabs, I pull off the top shells, lungs, guts, and the apron. Throw it in a bucket and it makes some of the best chum around for big saltwater fish. I've even put it in mesh sacks to re-bait my crab pots and it works great for that too.

The best crabs I’ve ever had were the ones I caught on a dock in Edgewater on the south river cooked up by my grandmother. I have no idea what magic she used but I haven’t tasted that since.

Grew up on the Chesapeake down the bay in Gloucester Va. Like them steamed uncleaned then seasoned with cold beer, season gets on your hands when picking, nothing better!

Love them both ways, I am from Delaware and have been cooking them mostly cleaned before cook for the last 20 years but still do them whole also. The cleaned ones get mushy when they are over cooked. They don't take as long to cook as the uncleaned crab. They are done as soon as the claws are bright red. Also it is always J.O. #2 on uncleaned and J.O. #1 on the cleaned ones. #2 is to salty for the cleaned ones.

A really long time ago. Here is Salisbury. My wife worked for a large national food broker. Dealing with companies in Canada, USA and Mexico. To entertain a company from Canada the broker invited a very affluent couple to come for an Eastern Shore feast. Now, we were steaming, corn, frying tomatoes and cooking crabs in the big pot. They showed up in a formal gown and tuxedo. You should have seen that dinner!.

No comparison between the 2, doing all the work to clean them all is what makes the crabs better. Why would people want to eat crabs that have their innards boiled or stemed in them.🤔 You guys can keep the mustard.😂 Still love the video.

50 years ago I camped near Cheriton. I was taught to clean them then steam them and have been doing so since. When I order them now to be sent to MO they are steamed whole but I clean them out and re-steam them. That has always been my preference but everyone has their own

King crab “tails” are the best part about eating them off the boat. They are by far the best steamed crab you can have, when fresh. Once they get shipped over here to the east coast they lose all the flavor. As well as the texture just being trash.

I'm a south Jersey guy so i prefer them cleaned but they don't cook at the same rate as whole crabs. They do best at 15 min steam then sit with the lid on and heat off for another 10 min. But the main thing you did wrong was only cooking 6. That's like only eating 1 potatoe chip. Lol. Old Bay is good but needs cayenne pepper also. But JO#2 is the best. Till next season my friend
