Welcome to the beautiful Crab Island!
If you’ve ever made the trip to the Emerald Coast, Destin specifically, there’s a great chance you have heard of Crab Island. Crab Island is one of the most popular attractions in all of Destin. Featured on HGTV and Good Morning America, Crab Island’s fame has been growing at a rapid pace. The shallow emerald green waters, obstacle courses and floating bars have made it one of the most popular things to do on the entire Gulf Coast. Today, Crab Island is nothing more than a raised sandbar. At one point, it actually was an island, but sands from the Gulf of Mexico have eroded it over the years to turn it into what it is today. In most places on Crab Island, the depth of the water is about 1-4 ft. It’s the perfect place to anchor your boat down and have a good time out in the sun!

That's true. But it's also rare. The Crab Island sandbar tends to be much busier on Friday and Saturday during tourist season, and much less busy (crazy) Sunday through Thursday. Of course, holiday weekends are the busiest.

Please provide the data to support those assertions. But before you try, consider the fact that there are hundreds of acres of grass beds in the 129 square miles of Choctawhatchee Bay, and the Crab Island sandbar is less than 1/4 square mile.

This is ridiculously innacurate. One of the two drownings happened in the pass, east of Crab Island. The other happened over a mile to the south. Neither of those two men died on the Crab Island sandbar.

From nearby Niceville Fl, we always laugh and call this "crap island". In any video or picture you see, there is never any a floating outhouse is there? Where do you think people go to the bathroom? Either directly into the water or in a bucket, then dump it into the water. Would you really want to swim in that, not to mention what it does to the environment.

Not really....and far less than you'd experience at a public beach or pool. For about 80-90% of each day there's a tidal current moving over the sandbar, and the water replaces itself about every 3-5 minutes.

@RavenATB

There is a company called the Crab Island Shuttle Boat, but there is no shuttle that will drop you off at the sandbar. It's illegal to do that. If a boat takes you there, that boat must stay with you while you're there.

Back in the early 80's, as a kid we used to take our skiff out to the island and catch blue crabs by the bucketful, with our hand nets. We started calling it crab island for that reason. This was long before the sandbar became a party location. Every year I fly back home and boat out to the sandbar, it's crazy how it's changed.
