Crab walking is an excellent way to dynamically strengthen the glute muscles around the hip. Much of our movement moves us either forward or backward. There is benefit to challenge the muscles in different directions. By challenging the gluteal muscles in the variety of angles, you will increase the ability for the gluteal muscles to stabilize the hip.
This exercise can help reverse a "Quad dominant," muscle imbalance. By performing drills such as the crab walk, you will build more awareness around the gluteal muscles and encourage their use during activity. Learning what these muscles feel like when they are active will then allow you to recognize their activity (or lack of activity) during specific movements.
Strong and correctly activated gluteal muscles help combat common conditions such as IT band syndrome, low back pain, knee pain, runner's knee to name a few.
