Crabapples for Deer

These are three young ones I stuck in the ground a couple of years ago. Obviously, I need to spend a little more time on maintenance, as I have not touched them since planting. They definitely would have benefited from me removing the fruit. Having 25 or 200 crabs falling in your cage is just a waste of energy, but there will be time to clean up that bottom 4'-5' this winter and put that growth up where it belongs for next year's growing season. It is nice to see trees fruiting like this, but we all know I like clean, productive trees fruiting on that one-year-old wood. Trees are a marathon, not a race; I should have pulled the fruit! Yet, these trees will no doubt be spitting me off a sustainable amount of fruit as they mature. Do you ever spray gly around the base? Any concerns with the branches rubbing on the metal cage? I have had that issue. If I were a deer, I would love you low hanging fruit! Thank you for sharing
