Crabbing NJ-Cumberland County ( 2023 )

Went further down South Jersey and happen to pass by a small bridge on a creek. Took a chance and tried to fish and crab. No luck there. Drove further in and found a spot that was teeming with crabs. Windy day and decided not to cook. We got 15 rusty fat crabs🦀!!! Have a great Labor Day weekend!!!

As a long time South Jersey Girl resident, I have crabbed and fished all these back water spots since I was a kid. THANK YOU for taking the time and responsibility to measure them. All too often I have witnessed people taking everything they catch....juvenilles and egg carrying females included. You are keeping our waters and marine life in checks and balances, ensuring good harvests for the next season. Thanks for setting the example here, well done! 👍

@@MM-dk7gt Thank you🥰! Thanks for the kind words. We give credit to all those Old time crabbers that we’ve met along the way. They’re the ones who guided us on the regulations and value of conservation. In the beginning, we would keep females without eggs because that’s what the rule book says. But after their kind explanation, we have decided not to keep anymore females, period. Sadly, we do see people taking undersized crabs and fish☹️too. In time, hopefully they’ll understand the value of conservation.

Thank you! Yes we were surprised, they were all fat and rusty. There’s no street or park name. We just drove along Matt’s Landing road in Heislerville NJ right along the Maurice River.

I crabbed both these locations on labor day weekend as well. Im not sure if you are aware but you can keep the females that are over 4.5in as long as they dont have eggs.

Yes😊Thanks for the info. It is legal to keep females in NJ as long as they don’t have eggs and are 4.5 inches. In the beginning, we used to keep the females, but after meeting many Old Time crabbers, they suggested that we shouldn’t for conservation purposes. So we just keep male crabs eversince🦀. This place was quite a drive for us but soooo beautiful. Thanks for watching🥰.

I have a question or two. How long after you cook your crabs can you keep them and how do you store them to eat later?

We usually store them in the refrigerator. We peel off the shell and make crab omelettes or use them in crab and corn soup. It will last for 4-5 days.

That looks like a pretty good place! Excellent find! I’ll be going to brigantine tomorrow and try out my new commercial type trap and fishing rod. Hopefully I’ll have as much luck as you had. Have a great Labor Day!

It was a pretty good day. I caught a dozen crabs, 4 dogfish, 2 croakers and a turtle. The commercial trap didn’t catch anything. I think I put it in a bad spot. I also left most of my chicken at home. Lol

That’s insane! Last time I went out about a week ago I caught 26 nice ones! Getting out there again tomorrow morning I’m hoping I get some nice rusty ones this time of year
