I took to the high seas on my modded Sevylor Fish Hunter 360 inflatable raft to drop some crab pots in the Pacific Ocean. Everything was smooth sailing until we exited Pillar Point Harbor and came face-to-face with 5 foot swells. Was the Half Moon Bay water too much to handle? Did we catch our targeted dungies? Watch to find out why I think this is just the beginning of more inflatable adventures!
Consider this a simple how-to crab trap instructional for beginners.

Hey! Great video but what I would recommend doing with the herring is taking sharp scissors and curing slits through the belly of the herring. This will release the fish oil and attract a lot more crab. Keep it up

soudns so fun, I'm jealous of the yak crabbing too, but I don't have an inflatable, I just swim out. can't get as far as you guys, but still works. just some anatomy tips though, the actual shell is the carapace! the body part on the bottom is called the abdomen, and colloquially known as the "apron".

no prob, wrong name, but functionally correct anyway. At first I thought you were going to actually talk about the carapace, caught me by surprise! because you totally could- males are wider, purple. females are less wide, more height, brown.

Great video, thank you for explaining the sexes of the crabs for those that don't know. Next if you can explain why you prefer Dungeness crabs over Rock crabs and what's the difference in the meat.
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 6 жыл бұрын
Yup i realized i didn't set-up the payoff pot too well. Rock crabs taste o.k., but their shells are super thick and the meat yield is lower. Dungeness are sweeter, more tender, easy to crack, and have much better meat yield👍

This video is exactly the reason viewers should watch to the end...so they can watch you scream like a little girl. LoL! Great video. One thing, not sure when you shot this video but, I thought you couldn't consume the crab butter earlier this season due to domoic acid levels. I know the DFG recinded the health advisory for dungeness but I think it's still on for Red Rock crab.

thx! tbh anytime during the season is good, you just have to plan accordingly. if you're targeting them from yak, you'll prob have best luck dropping pots at low tide and picking them up during the next high tide. from my snaring experience, they feed best during low swells.

Did you get cf #s for that raft? Just curious cause I have a canoe with a trolling motor, I don’t really worry about lakes and stuff, but going in the ocean subjects you to coast guard rules and regs. Any boat with any motor(even electric) needs to be registered, and if you take a motor powered boat in the ocean you need to be coast guard compliant as far,as safety gear...I’d like to go crabbing in that very spot but I’m scared of coast guard and I don’t wanna pay reg on a damn canoe... if I went with just paddles, no worries on anything...

Looked like you had a good time - crabbing is usually fun, especially when you bring home crab. thx John for the knowledge! however, this was filmed in Half Moon Bay, CA and there appears to be no pot limit per person for recreational crabbing. per nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=150181, "There is no limit to the number of crab traps that can be used by recreational crabbers, except the limit is 60 when operating under authority of a commercial passenger fishing vessel license." hopefully i'm reading this right :) the one thing i didn't do correctly in this vid was a proper destructible door. my pots have been modified since this vid to meet that requirement.

@@chrisjohnson1440 Thanks for the tips. Might try to go up and stay for a weekend with the family. Drove right through there with my shuttle bus and family aboard, may have been night time. We took 1 all the way up to WA. Where are good places to crab in the area from shore or a raft? Right there in the river? Might get waterfront rooms. Thanks!

Killer crab bait: good quality squid(not freezer burnt), fresh or frozen large sardines cut in chunks, fresh anchovies are incredible if you can catch/buy some. Crabs are all about the scent and fresh bait works way better than old bait. Seen guys use old squid the crabs wouldn't touch it. Using crab snares I would change bait on every cast, always putting fresh bait trail in the current so the crabs can home in on your bait faster. 🦀🦀🦀👍😎 Beware of domoic acid poisoning in crabs, it's a very real thing that should not be taken lightly

Ish, Went fishing with a friend and borrowed gear and loved it Looking for a recommendation for a rod/reel combo, very inexpensive to fit my budget, and would last for a couple of years. Any thoughts or suggestions? I saw a Shimano FX4000FC on EBAY for about $27 but was very concerned about a knock off that would fall apart after 2 - 3 trips.

Ish With Fish thanks for the reply, I guess I’ll have to hit the dmv if I wanna go in the ocean...you remember how much it was and if it was a hassle at all? Lol I have no “paperwork” for a plastic canoe I got off craigslist for 50$....

it was easy! fill out 1 vessel form, just need to identify hull ID, should be on your vessel somewhere. reg was only like $39 i think.

Really enjoyed the video. UT just wanted to tell you that the motor you are using is not for saltwater use and will corrode and break down very quickly. Look into a brand on Amazon called Newport Marine, great motors and they can be used in the salt.

thx ethan! lol yup it's totally legal, just need to have vessel tags (i do), fishing license (i do), pots with destructible doors (i do) and a gauge (always do). otherwise, i'm free to catch 10 keepers per day for the rest of the season this way:) trolling motor is electric, i ran 2 12v marine batteries, really only used one, had the 2nd for backup.

Just a tip from a fellow fisherman I would use/add lead weights on the rope to sink it so it’s not a hazard to other boats in shallow water

Ish With Fish also find areas with eel grass An sandy bottoms really high chances of crabs being there, an fresh bait usually works better but you can mix it 50/50 In the bait bag half frozen half fresh

Cool video! Was planning on crabbing that area in a few weeks. What would be considered bad conditions? Like how much wind and how big of swells? I’ll also be on a hobie outback. It’s a long drive for us so I want to make sure it’s worth driving to.
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 3 жыл бұрын
hi, so for me optimal conditions are 2-3' swell or less, 12sec period or more, wind 5mph or less. all three combined and its like a gentle lake. ideally, drop pots a couple hours before a slack tide, and pick up a couple hours after the slack tide. this gives the current a chance to spread scent and the nice conditions allow the crab ample time to find your pot. be safe and good luck!
