I was a Sheriff's Explorer in Florida back in the early 90's and I was on the pistol team. We used Colt Pythons with 6 inch barrels and Pachmayr grips and tritium sights. We shot .38 special wadcutters. I loved that gun. Unfortunately we were using old department guns that had hundreds of rounds through them with .357 +P ammo. So the barrel wasn't exactly in the best shape. We would argue with our coach that our shots weren't grouping great because of that. And he would say it was us. Then he shot it and he was ranked #17 in the US, so he finally admitted that it was worn out. But they were right on the verge of swapping over to semi auto. So we couldn't get new ones. Instead we went into the armory looking through hundreds of pistols to find some that had better rifling. Then they finally switched to semi-auto, but they were worried about people using race guns and modified guns, so it had to be what your department carried. Which for us was the Beretta 92F. It was a mess. So they made it Beretta 92F or Glock 17. A female could use a Glock 19 or a Taurus PT92C. But people started cheating with laser grips or guide rod replacements, tricked out guns. I left when that started going into effect but they should have stuck with revolvers. Nothing beats a Colt Python 6" hammering away.

FYI, from a guy who started with PD when revolvers were what everyone carried, you have your speedloaders on the wrong side. They should be right in front of your holster because when you are reloading, the gun will be held by your weak hand after the cylinder is open, you've hit the ejector and dumped the empties, and now you're going for the loader with your strong hand. If they are right in front of the holster, they're right under your hand.
@noahfriend320 Жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, I'm about 75% sure Massad Ayoob came up with doing that in the 80s to take advantage of better strong hand dexterity under stress.. There was a time before that when weak-hand revolver reloads were the accepted method.
@douglaslarue4264 Жыл бұрын
Another COP from the 80's here. MacDorsal is correct about moving the speed loader pouch to Strong side. Also, you need to break those Speed loaders in no matter what brand. You will notice thigs pick up quickly. There is a rhythm to the whole thing. Stay safe and have fun.
@jamesshannon9721 Жыл бұрын
You beat me to this comment.. And yes- the cop in the training film clip was also setup this way for some reason.. Now- if you have the dexterity to load with your weak hand (i never did) and maintain gun in firing hand then sure this setup makes sense. Some guys used to keep a third speed loader on their weak side- if they had enough real estate on their belts (this was back when duty belts (Sam Browns) werent festooned with more than a flashlight rig, radio and straight baton...and the latter often rode behind the headrest.. God I'm old. .

Great video. Quick tips: When speed loading, keep the gun at chest level, so you keep situational awareness. Also, DON'T pull the speedloader (especially the HKS) from the cylinder. If the rounds hang up, spin the cylinder with the thumb/forefinger and let the loader drop free. Pulling it away may induce a stoppage. Chamfering the torpedo tubes helps too. Thanks for sharing. 🇺🇸

Stil the coolest revolver ever still is the S&W Model 29 with the 6 1/2 inch barrel used by Dirty Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry series. Side note though. Carry your speed loaders on your strong side in front of your holster. The manual of arms for a revolver reload is to shift the revolver into your support hand with the middle two fingers holding onto the open cylinder while your strong hand grabs the speed loader/speed strip, and reloads. Also Ive found that the HKS speed loaders work the best in S&W revolvers I don't have that sticking issue you have with yours when reloading my Model 19-3 or my Model 586.

I own my father's old 1964 6" Python in royal blue in excellent condition. The load side grip comes from the factory thinner at the top to give clearance for speed loaders. I hope to bring it out for a couple of pin shoots next summer. Or maybe use it as my cenerfire gun in Bullseye.

Love the Python. Had a ‘74 6”, sold it when I was dead broke. Bought a 2020 model a couple of years ago. I found the speedloaders from 5 Star Firearms to be superior to the HKS.

@AdoreYouInAshXI Жыл бұрын
@@KID_WAFA You talking about the regular 2020 Python grips? Those are laminate grips, not walnut. But yes, I used the 5 star speedloaders and they work much better than the HKS. I bought a pair of Deer Hollow original Colt grips to replace the stock ones and both speedloaders work great.

I'm always jelly of the people that bought a gun when it was super cheap, only to have a show or movie make it massively popular to the point it drives the value of the gun up 10 fold.
@stevem4783 Жыл бұрын
Python values skyrocketed far before The Walking Dead was a thing. They've been worth a lot for a long time. Colt bringing them back for 2020 actually stabilized the pricing a bit. The old ones still go for a premium, but they stopped rising rapidly once people had the option of buying a new one again if they wanted.

As awesome as really good revolvers are they have been put into two categories of use, range toy, or handgun hunting. But even hunting with a handgun has kinda gone by the way side because of modern ammo like hardcast +p and copper solids like the extreme penetrator.

I have 1 revolver in my carry rotation. Perfect pocket gun. Can shoot it without cocking it. It will even shoot from concealment. With 2 speed loaders, I never feel outgunned.

True, for me mainly range toy and collecting, however I think there will always be a practical need for a big bore revolver. Two instances I can think of, Alaska carry (.357 or .44 mag, etc.) for backup wilderness bear protection (primary being 12 ga.), secondly, SWAT shield usage as the slide on a semi-auto can hit the shield and jam the gun. Revolvers don't have this issue.
@CheekyMenace Жыл бұрын
@@YacolJ Not to mention the confidence of not having to worry about a malfunction if a self defense moment arises.
@stevem4783 Жыл бұрын
Snubnoses make excellent carry pieces. They're easy to conceal, easy to operate, exceptionally reliable & low maintenance, and no polymer pocket queen is matching a .357 in power. Past that, you don't have to worry about a slide ending up out of battery when firing from a jacket pocket in a "get off me" scenario. Longer barrel revolvers are very relevant for animal defense for people in those kinds of environments too. You're not matching the available power you can get out of .357 or .44 loads in a semi, let alone getting into something like a .454 Casull or .460 XVR.

I wasn’t impressed initially when the Colt snake guns came back, but after CZ took the reins I can whole heartedly say that they are a class above the S&W and Rugers, including the custom shop versions. The Colt is so smooth it’s hard to explain, it’s a hydraulic smoothness, it’s tight without being tight if that makes any sense. It’s something that has to be felt and experienced. The price is justified in my opinion.
@stevem4783 Жыл бұрын
Rugers are what you buy if you want something tough, not something smooth. I'm a revolver fanboy through and through, Smiths are generally my least favorite.
@chrisjosekuehl Жыл бұрын
I Colt or smith are just as tough. I guess if I was going to feed my gun nothing but +p or +p+ all of the time then a ruger might be a better choice but there’s no evidence that a steel revolver from any of the 3 is stronger than the other.
@stevem4783 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisjosekuehl There's quite a bit of evidence. A GP100 is much tankier than a Python or 686 and the Redhawk and Blackhawk lines are near indestructible. Nothing wrong with the Colts or Smiths, don't get me wrong. I have a Python myself and very much love it, but Rugers are absolute tanks.
@chrisjosekuehl Жыл бұрын
@@stevem4783 you’re attributing weight to strength. I do think Ruger makes a beefier revolver but I have yet to hear of a Colt or Smith breaking or wearing out from use.

@@chrisjosekuehl No, I'm not. It's true, look it up yourself rather than just defaulting to telling me I'm wrong or making assumptions. You don't have to be defensive about it. Research. Past that, revolvers have absolutely broken from wear and high power loads.

Oh no oh oh noooo. That killed me. And the revolver is not out dated its modern survival gear it doubles as a hammer, a club for fighting, a tiny weak clamp if you can fit something under the hammer kinda works for sewing, and a mirror if it's stainless, and it won't break through all that good stuff. Also you can mount a scope if your smoking crack.

Personally I find the S&W model 19 to be the better looking .357 revolver than the Colt python. I guess the python is just a more distinct recognizable model ? There's more than one S&W model that looks the same as the model 19, the model 14 and model 29 have the same look and could be confused at 20+yds but the python isn't really getting confused for any other Colt models except for maybe the Anaconda that followed it.

Look into the S.L. Varian speed loader. They're expensive, but imho worth it if you can get it to fit with your gun. You fit the tips of the rounds into the back of the cylinder and push forward...the bullets are spring-loaded into the cylinders without any further action, no twisting or manipulation required. I have a S&W 686+, because I think it's cool, it's enormous, stainless steel, and if I miss 7 times I have a big hunk of steel to hit someone with.

Since the only handgun I had was my dad's Colt 1991A1 and I didn't want to carry that (for a few reasonss) I bought a S&W .38. It was the 1st gun I ever bought. I’m not a boomer and I’ve been carrying revolvers primarily for 20 years (including a Python). I have a SA 1911A1 .45 and an M9 Beretta but I carry those only about 25% of the time. But I don’t “feel” any better armed with those than with my revolvers. If anything, I feel better armed with a .357 Magnum. If “firepower” is what I’m really needing, I’m not reaching for any handgun, I’m reaching for my AR or 870. I think revolvers are just as valid today as in 1935.
