DIRECTOR: Naomi McDougall Jones

PRODUCER: Jessica Zemple
DIRECTOR STATEMENT from Naomi McDougall Jones
Jessica's story with her father is a profound testament to the human capacity for compassion and love, even in the face of unimaginable trauma. What initially captivated me about her narrative was the remarkable level of grace and acceptance she has built in her adult relationship with him, despite enduring unspeakable harm at his hands during her childhood, and even while still carrying the anger, pain, and damage of those wounds.
In contemporary society, mental illness often carries a heavy stigma, leading to its demonization and misunderstanding. We find ourselves oscillating between extremes-on one hand, there's a tendency to vilify those suffering from mental health disorders, and on the other, there's a temptation to absolve them entirely of responsibility for their actions.
With Cracked, we aim to challenge both of these prevailing attitudes. We intend to say that mental illness has the potential to wreak havoc in the lives of those around the afflicted individual, leaving wounds that need to be healed, AND that, through deep compassion and a shift in perspective, it is possible to arrive at a place of mutual redemption.
Jessica's story serves as a poignant reminder that, while mental illness can be incredibly destructive, it is not insurmountable. Through love, compassion, and understanding, meaningful relationships can be forged and reconciliation becomes achievable.
By sharing Jessica's journey, our intention is to foster empathy and encourage a more nuanced understanding of mental health. Rather than simply condemning or excusing individuals for their actions, we should strive to recognize the complexities of their circumstances and the profound impact of mental illness on their lives and the lives of those around them.
Ultimately, I hope that our film inspires viewers to reconsider their perceptions of mental illness - including, most importantly, those suffering from mental illness in their own lives - and recognize the inherent humanity and resilience of those affected by it. Through empathy and compassion, we can create a more inclusive and supportive society where healing and reconciliation are possible, even in the face of profound adversity.

Just the trailer alone is very powerful. I'm very much looking forward to the full documentary. Schizophrenia is a rough one to deal with and I commend you for making amends with it while you were still able. People shouldn't need to feel ashamed or embarrassed to talk about these kinds of struggles, yet here we all are struggling alone in the dark hoping the trauma doesn't get the better of us. Mental illness will never get easier to deal with, but the devastation that can be left in the wake of untreated mental illness shouldn't be quieted. It should be celebrated when we survive and continue to thrive. 💙 Much love! Linda

We went to high school together (I think you were in my sisters grade) and I’m really looking forward to watching this…You seem like a very soulful person and it’s brave of you to be so vulnerable. Hopefully this helps a lot of people effected by the disease but also allows others who are not effected to embrace their own circumstances and live honestly. Everybody is dealing with something and it helps heal when someone is brave and shares their truth like you are.

@@jessicazemple Thank you. It took me a lifetime to really understand my condition and hearing others and their stories are priceless. We are truly misunderstood and you seem to know yourself there's so much more going on. Like your father, mine came on around eighteen and took me years to find medication that helped. And like you say, I choose to remain childless in case of passing on my condition. My family are my rock and you know I need them most to know me. Schizophrenics are a rare breed indeed. Much love. My younger sister suffers from Schizophrenia which we suspect was brought on by drug use since it developed so late in life. I just finished watching your SWU interview and I agree with you about these folks having connections that normal people don't. I believe my sister can communicate with animals. She has said some things about what my dog was thinking or my horse that have been right on it. She is hours away from me. She is now medicated and doing well living with a relative. She is unusually happy with her prescribed meds, no side effects she says, not typical of someone in her condition. Count your blessings right? Her animal communication was before she found this great medication. So , too bad not going back there, lol. She is 99% herself while on this medication. Mom and I call it a miracle.....❤

I just came across your trailer, I really wanted to thank you and think it's amazing that you are doing this. I have schizophrenia and the stigma around it wrecked my life for awhile more than anything else. I really respect your hard work bringing awareness to this topic, it's not done enough on this side of the world and it also brings perspective for me as well, in that I will never fully understand how my husband, friends or family experience what it's like from their lens. At times I can hold a lot of hurt and seeing this documentary will help me empathize more as well. I have been in remission from psychosis for over 3 years and run an online support group for others struggling with the diagnosis. If there is anything at all I can do to help, please let me know how I can get in touch with you. Thank you again so much for your hard work and bravery putting this all together.

I was so moved by your interview with Mark. I can relate to some of the feelings and fears you experienced with your Dad…my Dad was a functioning addict most of my life. He passed over a decade ago, and although we had a “relationship” (reversed roles…I was more the parent and he the child), I wish I had your insight when he was still alive. I was hurt, angry and embarrassed. I live with such guilt from that 😭. I wish I could do several things over again with him. Thank you for a nice perspective.
