What are the early signs it's starting to fail? And is it a service item I must replace after a specific mileage?

Interesting question with no answer from Toyota and Aisin the filter's manufacturer. Even cleaning it might be a problem. Since it can damage it's filtering capacity by solvents or compressed air. I think, regardless of all these issues, it's always better to get a filtered exhaust gaz into the MAP sensor (expensive part and not easily available in the market).
