1. The harsh sounds from the Dutch are the 'g' (choking noise) The harsh sounds of the Germans are 'ch' (like an angry cat) Both are convinced the óther language is the worst. 2. Comes from 'Diets' or 'Nederdiets' which I believe was the area/language/ohwhatever in between the Netherlands and Germany. Diets was like the stage the language was in, befóre it was Dutch (Nederlands) 3. Genes, lots of dairy and healthy food. We were nr. 1 by Ofxam-tests on the food-quality, price-range ánd taste. (and a couple of other things) 4. I don't know. That's a matter of taste. 5. We get taught from an early age and our sentence-structure is somewhat similar. Example; french people go; le li de la tu du meu pleu de la wha te vur" where we go; 'dit is gewoon een voorbeeldzin.' The french have sounds and short words, we have longer ones (like the Germans and English do) 6. Because we are healthy, we bike a lot, we have great food and so on. We are masters in the art of complaining, but we know we got it good. 7. Oh stop it you *blushes in Dutch* 8. No, that's the Germans. We put most of our stuff in our agenda, as oppose to 'Yeah we'll see each other next week somewhere or something"-appointments, so we know in advance how to use our time. But the Germans are fár worse and will plan their holidays for the year and the year áfter. Or they write down how long they'll stay at a party, in their agenda's. 9. We do have curtains but Dutch people like the 'free' light from outside. It saves on electricity bills, it saves on the environment-issues, it shows off your stupid memorabilia and it gives you the opportunity to 'spy' on others outside. 10. I don't know. I do it too. Why not? I love it. 11. Just accept it. Coming home drenched is normal, just make sure to call your family before you start travelling, so they're ready with towells and warm chocomel. Don't use umbrella's when it's windy, they'll die. 12. Because that way, you're not risking to pay for other people's food-outbursts and they don't risk paying for yours. If you pay for your own food, you are responsible for your own food and your own wallet. You know how many people get fights over that kindof stuff, if you split the bill and some people had ordered twice the amount that you had? This is easier and safer. 13. It's polite to pay for the girl, but splitting the bill is alright too, if you didn't take her to an expensive restaurant without discussing that first. It's also acceptable to let her pay for the drinks (assuming they were normal drinks, not 'expensive' alcoholic) and the guy pays the food. 14. Most of us do, yes. I do too. And walking ofcourse was first, but some have a 'walkingbike' without the pedals, to practice both at the same time. 15. No, it mostly tourists.Some do it on weekends with friends, but it's not that big of a deal, or common. 16. I don't know, I'm a woman.

I can agree with everything. However: of the youth, it'd be around 80% who has smoked weed or still does. I think a big % of that also does it on a daily basis, but I can't say for sure. I'm just sayin that smoking is extremely popular among the youth.

Sven W, it was an estimation. But honestly, more people smoke weed than you'd think. I don't know if you've ever smoked weed or smoked it on a more regular basis. But everywhere you go and everywhere where you'd meet new ppl, they've smoked weed. Talking about the age of 18 - 30.

About there first two questions ;) 1st answer: it is seriously not the worst language. the Dutch language only has 1 grade, however German has 3 which makes things harder (by a lot), then you go to Czech Republic which has even more grades, following up to Poland which has even more. And don't get me started on Hungarian :) the Dutch language is actually one of the languages closest to the English language (grammar-wise). Dutch could be a bit hard because of their exceptions in grammar rules and the speaking might be a bit hard in the beginning haha. 2th answer: because Dutch comes from the old Dutch word 'Diets' (which means Dutch or from the Netherlands), which is also the reason that we are talking about 'Duitse bloed' in our national anthem. Little bit of cool history there :)
@patrickhanley6963 жыл бұрын
True. Dutch is a very straightforward language to learn for English speakers. The problem lies in a few very awkward (for non Dutch speakers) pronounciations as well as the, let's just say peculiar spellings for certain words but other than that the two languages are very close to one another. I tried my hand with Dutch on Duolingo, as well as Irish because of my roots. I could not begin to tell you how difficult Irish was in comparison to Dutch as an English speaker! I mean, oh my days, like chalk and cheese as they say.

In the old days (16th and 17th century) the Dutch called themselfs ''Diets'' or ''Duits'', this is were the word Dutch comes from in English. It's also the reason the national anthem says ''Duitsen bloed''.
@earthkidsnederland9096 жыл бұрын
That's not why the anthem says Duitsen bloed. It's because Willem van Oranje became the leader of the Dutch Rebellion. Long story short, Willem van Oranje originally came from German (Duitsen bloed means German blood) and was in his teenage years raised by the Spanish because he inherited a part of the Netherlands which was conquered by Spain. After the disagreement between the Spanish leader Philips and Willem van Oranje (who possessed a great part of the Netherlands by then) about the best way to rule the Netherlands Willem van Oranje decided to conquer the Netherlands from Spain under his lead. Eventually, Willem van Oranje won. That part of the anthem kind of written through Willem van Oranje. It says 'ben ik van Duitsen bloed' and 'de koning van Hispanje heb ik altijd geëerd', which means 'I am of German blood' and 'I have always honored the king of Spain' (the king of Spain raised Willem van Oranje partly, therefore he honours him, although the son of the king he was raised by and Willem disagreed).

I always say, when foreigners ask me; "Why are Dutch so tall? " "Because short people drown first, when the Nederlands floads."
@willemijneijsink51696 жыл бұрын
The real reason us Dutch are so tall is because earlier on, (1500-1750s I'm guessing) we slept much more than the rest of the world, thus coming into our systems and genetics. Along with a healthy diet, you can grow very tall. I live in Tokyo, with all my international friends going to bed at minimum 22:00, and I'm 13 but go to bed at 20:30 (and wake up at 7:00). My cousins in the Netherlands have it worse. My 5 year old cousin goes to bed at 19:00, the time where international 5 year Olds have dinner.

i disagree that the grammar is so different, i learned dutch by listening and i know english and german so it was fast to get the idea of the language and how its spoken, you get the feel when you need to use english grammar or german grammar in dutch after a while, i think it shifts in between so its not so different
@Widdekuu916 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to learn German while being Dutch when you focus on the 'False friends.' Communication can become a real horror when you mix those up. A German guy once did. He got an office-job in the Netherlands and proudly announced that he and his collegues; 'Were very good at klaarkomen together." (NL; We kunnen goed samen klaarkomen.") The entire office was confused and started laughing, because yés, "Wir können gut klarkommen" in Gérman, means that you get along great together. Klaarkomen in Dutch however, means to ejaculate. There's another few that you don't want to mess up. I once listed them for a German friend, I found the list back, here it is: "Zwoel(seductive)/Schwul(gay-ish)" "geil(awesome)/geil(horny)" "fikkie(small fire)/fickie(quick fuck)" "enkel(ankle)/enkel(grandchild)" "blazen(blowing)/blasen(Blowjob)" "doof(deaf)/doof(stupid/dumb)" "Meer(sea)/Meer(lake)" "See(lake)/Zee(sea)" "Ausfahrt(exit to a highway)/Uitvaart(funeral)" "pijnlijk (painful)/peinlich(embarassing)" 'bellen(barking)/bellen(calling)" "slim(smart)/schlimm(really bad)" 'Schon(already)/schoon(clean)" "Schoen(shoe)/Schoen(pretty)" "Weer(again or weather)/Wer(who?)" "Wie(who?)/Wie(how?)" "Was(laundry or was)/was(What?)" "oorlog(war)/ohrloch(earring-hole)" "Fahren(driving)/varen(sailing)" "mist(shit)/mist(mist)" 'Blöd(stupid/idiotic)/Bloot(naked)" "Zug(train)/Zeug(sow)"

I'm actually convinced it's because of the milk and cheese that you guys in the north are taller. By the way; there's Dutch Dutch and just Dutch, you with me? Let me explain. So in the Netherlands, as you guys mentioned, you use that quite horrible G that sort of sounds like you're trying to get slime out of your throat (if anyone has a nicer way of describing that G, you're welcome to comment ;) ). However in Flanders, our Dutch has completely different pronounciation. Our G is more an exagerated sigh or something, it's actually a sound that is even harder to learn and even the Dutch can't really do it. We also don't 'round off' vowels. If you think about it, you guys would say "wvei-jde" while in flanders it's more "wèède" for "weide". That rounding off thing is also distinct for English which is what can make a Flemish accent in English very very ugly if not payed attention to. Then there's also a little issue with shortening just about every sentence, unless you're from Limburg ;). It's a very common issue foreigners encounter when they're learning Flemish Dutch. Basically the sentence "ik weet het niet" (idk) can be reduced in everyday language to "kweenie" which to a foreigner does not sound close at all. We just tend to wooz over words with soft G's and without a lot of noticable stops in "vocal flow". I study in Amsterdam as a Belgian so I do have a few Dutch friends and study in"Dutch Dutch" and I have to say that I like the Dutch language in Flanders a lot more but I find that the Dutch are a lot more welcoming and no nonsense which I often enjoy more than the little less friendly and complicated way Belgians are.

Why are the Dutch called the Dutch? Well, originally, the Dutch *and* the German language were called 'Diets' (Deets, 'ee' as in 'speed') and so, the Dutch referred to the German language as 'diets' (strangely not the other way around) and the English referred to the Dutch language, due to more intense rivalries and connections, as 'diets'. In English this became 'Dutch' and in Dutch it became 'Duits' ('ui' has no English synonyme, Dutch has a lot of additional dipthongs)

Dutch DJ's are "good" because we're very (perhaps overly) critical towards DJ's. Just like the Belgians and the Germans, we've "seen it all". Get the crowd going here, and you won't have a problem (supposedly) anywhere else in the rest of the world.

Sambal isn't Chinese, it's from Indonesia. The Dutch variation on the "Chinese kitchen" is rather a odd one, which actually came from the Dutch Golden Age and taken from various Asian countries. When Chinese people came to the Netherlands they wanted to make restaurants, but because the real Chinese food isn't really known, they started to use food from other countries like India and Indonesia and adapted those to suit the Dutch. That's why the Chinese are often named in such cases. Just like the Chinese restaurants which are really more Indonesian food restaurants. Hair gel? Nope, did use it just a little in the past. But no more, just makes a mess and your hands are so sticky and hard to clean after using it.
