The 8 in R7C7 was the first thing I did. The two cells of that cage which are outside of box 9 also have to exist inside of box 9, meaning 8 cells of box 9 also equal 37, meaning that both those two digits also = 8, which sets the arrow circle.
@stevieinselby3 жыл бұрын
I'm not convinced by that. You could have had the arrow as ⑨=8+1, with 9 and 1 in the tail of the cage in box 8. All you know is that _one_ of the cells in box 9 that isn't in the cage is an 8, and the other two are in the tail of the cage. (Obviously there are _other_ reasons why that arrangement doesn't work, but you can't rule it out at the start)
@Lockemenos3 жыл бұрын
@@stevieinselby Yeah, I discovered it had to be an 8 in the circle because a 9 in the circle places too much pressure on the three cell arrow in box 6. You rule out 9 in the circle in box 6 by sudoku, and the arrangement forces a 1 off the arrow, and you can't make 6 or 7 without a 1
@CroixMedia3 жыл бұрын
I did the same after restricting the 1s in box 6. I noticed that the two cells in the 37-cage outside box 9 have to be found in the arrow in box 9. If the circle has a 9, then those two cells are 8 & 1, with the 1 in r8c8. By knights move, r9c6 sees 1 & 9, which with the 37-cage, rules out any legal digits for that square.

"Now we're properly getting stuck" - except instead of all the shenanigans you've just done about the outies of the 37 cage, you've missed that there's only one place for 1 in box 9, which would have made the outies 1 and 7 without needing to pencil-mark them. I keep telling you Simon, sudoku is your friend, and it's been very good to you. Don't treat your friends like this. Just after this, you pencil-mark 346 into a cell seen by a 6, then say you're stuck again. If you had looked _before_ you pencil-marked, you'd have realised that the cell was a 34, giving a 34 pair in box 5 and allowed you to place the 6 in the box, which would then have avoided the need to pencil-mark 69 and 67 in box 2. Even after later identifying the 346 as purple, and therefore 34, you _still_ didn't remove the 6, or place the 6 in the box. You also had purple and blue in row 3, with the only other cell being 346, but you didn't mop up. This is why we shout at you.

30:00 you could figure out it had to be a 3 long ago, around 27:00. When you placed the 1 pencil marks, you know it needed a 1 or 2. If it has a 1, the only digit it could also contain is a 2, as it can't be 3,4,5,7 or 8. And 6 is ruled out as the total would be 7. Then with the 2 which must be there, you could only have a 1, as it can't be 3,4 or 7, and the total can't be 7 or 8 ruling out 5 and 6. 38:00, yes, a deadly pattern where you have a cell that could be a 5 or 9, and 3 cells to the right there is a 9...

Hey Simon. I've thought of an even simpler way to explain phistomerfel (and related set-thingies). Say: "We're going to select a set of the digits 1-9 in one color". Select box 1 in orange. Say: "No we select a different set of the digits 1-9. Select row 1 in blue. Now we cancel out the cells that have both orange and blue. So... we're left with these two colored regions and what we know is that IF a digit, say three is in the orange region, THEN it will also be in the blue region. And the other way around, if say four is NOT in the orange region then it is also NOT in the blue region. And we can continue doing this. Add another box, add another row and cancel the dual colored cells." When explaining the ring, then you start out with say box 1 and column three. When explaining the alternative version (with the corner boxes moved inwards) there is always the issue with the cells counted twice. This is completely avoided if you do it incrementally like this. Hmmm... You will have to start cancelling out before you add the next blue for this to work.

There was a lot more that you could do with the colouring! Full disclosure: I had to watch a couple of bits of the video because I got stuck, so I certainly can't claim to have solved this one better than Simon did, but I'm pleased to have spotted a couple of things he didn't! First of all, I did the colouring in boxes 8/9 straight away, literally the first thing I looked out. When you know that an 8️⃣ goes somewhere on the arrow set in box 9, what happens if you put it in r8c8? It puts a 1️⃣ into r7c8 and makes the circle into a 9️⃣ ... but on the arrow in box 6, it now rules out a 1️⃣ from that arrow making it 2️⃣+3️⃣+4️⃣=9️⃣, which clashes. And the arrow in box 9 can't be 3️⃣+5️⃣, because where do you put 🟩 in box 6? It can't go in any of the unclaimed cells, so it _must_ be one of the digits you've already written into box 6.

12 puzzles in 2 hours - consider how many sudoku you can do on camera in 2 hours. Even before the channel swapped to doing incredibly difficult ones, so the 2-3 star difficulty puzzles you used to typically tackle and spent about 20-30 minutes on most. In a 2 hour sudoku stream back then, with comparatively easy puzzles, you'd have been solving around 4-6 per stream. Baba is You, by the point you are in the game, is a lot harder than the GAS Mark is able to rattle 5 off in around 30 minutes. Just because you're not putting in pencil marks doesn't mean you're not making progress.

another way to place the 8 in box 9 is this: we know r7c7 can only be 8 or 9 but 8 definitely exist on that arrow or its circle. we also know the 2 cells that belong to the 37 cage in box 8 have to be on that arrow or its circle as well. if we try mapping them, we see r9c6 can only map to r7c8, meaning that cell can never be 8 because of the 37 cage. we also know that cell cant be 1 because theres definitely a 1 on the arrow in box 6. meaning if we put a 9 in r7c7 we have nowhere to put the 8 in box 9. sorry if this is a weird way to explain it or if it makes it sound complicated

Quite a different approach compared to my solve. I didn't even consider the interaction of the 7 and 9 arrow. I figured out that the arrow on the right is a 9 arrow and a couple 8's and 1's. From there I saw that the 8 and 17 cage need different pairs that add add to 7 so I used coloring to go on. I didn't solve the 8 cage until I got the 2 on the 3 arrow.
@hom-sha-bom3 жыл бұрын
At 11:43 he says you can't put 1 & 5 on that arrow because it doesn't allow you to put a 1 in the 8 cage. Can someone please explain how? Why can't you put a 1 in R3C2 & R5C3? Those cells are not in the same row, column, box, or killer cage. He does have the 1's pencil marked in row 5 already, but he didn't give any explanation for why he did that other than he just said you can't put it on the arrow in box 4. But why can't you?
@GLogic3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you figured it out or not but the 8 cage needs to have a 1 'cause the only way to add to 8 w/ 3 different digits is 125 and 134 (both containing 1s) so a 1 has to be in the cage and therefore ruling out a 1 from the arrow by Sudoku + knight's move.
@sandraraituma3 жыл бұрын
Its so funny, I couldn't solve this puzzle to save my life, but I can notice some interesting things that would help to solve it :D Like cell r7c8 cant be 8, because the cell r9c6 cant be in the 2 other empty cells in box 9 by knights move. So it has to go there. And if it can't be 1 as well (as we later find out), the combination on the arrow cant be 9=1+8 - Because r7c8 cant be either 8 or 1. So 8 must go in the circle.

It took me far longer to solve than Simon ... but I did spot early in the solve that the 8 could be placed in R7C7 by using Phistomophel because it is the only place an 8 could go in the ring, and the alternative would have placed an 8 in the outer 2x2 box - and there would have been nowhere to put it.

There was another way to figure out where the 8 in box 9 goes. If the 8 was on the arrow, then the arrow sum is 8+1 = 9, and because of the 1 on the middle row of box 6, that forces the 1 into the central cell of box 9. But now it's impossible to fit both 1 and 9 into the big 37 cage!

Lost for words, Simon? What happened to your stock of superlatives? This was a great puzzle, not out of reach of this old geezer, after his thorough schooling at the CtC Academy of Daily Delights. I was rather pleased with myself when I resolved the arrow in box 9 by proving that R8C8 must be among the digits I already placed in box 6: 9-126 on the arrow and the 8 in the top-left corner of the box. It therefore had to be a 1 and that was my signal for the endgame. I also resorted to 34 colouring which was at that point well nigh mandatory. I am getting the hang of this game, I think. Thanks, Simon and friends!!

As much as I love sudoku in general, I hate this kind of frustrating puzzle-ones that look fairly straightforward at first, but then rely on searching out some obscure little bit of reasoning before you can advance. I struggled for over 90 minutes on the 79 pair/17 cage combo to see if I could break it open, but didn't get anywhere. I finally resorted to checking the video, up to the point where the 8s were resolved. Then I worked on it for close to another hour to finish the thing, only to check the ending and find out I'd gotten the solution wrong. Not at all a satisfying solve.

Crazy that Simon doesn’t color anything until 24min, but it was the first thing I did, before getting immediately stuck…

Is anyone else getting contradictions with 5s? I don't know what I am doing wrong, I keep getting 5s that are impossible. :(

I'm learning that "approachable" is only for god like solvers. You apparently don't have mortals to try these things out and give feedback. This was not at all possible for me, and watching the video didn't give me an aha moment to change that conclusion.

Simon you should keep a close watch after Mark, He has taken the booster not feeling all too well. The boostershots often turn out to be lethal
