Thanks for featuring my puzzle! I was really hoping it would make its way to the channel, and I’m thrilled it did. A big thanks to the solvers who recommended it. You followed the intended path almost perfectly-something that never ceases to amaze me with the puzzles you feature. I especially appreciated the overcomplicated 'vicious digit' in r2c7-it was brilliant in its own unique way! 😄 Wishing you the best and hoping everything is going well.

Very nice puzzle, thanks! I started in a more laborious way. Essentially, I noticed that the cages in Rows 4 and 6 had a strong effect on the central digit (r5c5). Eg, the five digits NOT in the cages in Row 4 all see the central digit, and similarly for Row 6. There were only a small number of possible fills for all the cages, and only one combination didn't rule out all nine possibilities for central digit, which ended up having to be 9.

Another neat way to place 1 in r3c5 as the 2nd digit is to use geometry to recognize that the digit is shared diagonally between two of the cages in rows 2 and 4. Using the same sort of trick as with r5c5, r3c5 sees every cell in row 2 and 4 except for the ones in the cages, so they have to be in the cages (they can't be in box 5 row 4 due to the whispers line), and the only shared digit is 1.

I finished in 87 minutes. That break-in was so satisfying to discover. I felt just like Simon when I spotted it and even did a classic out loud "a-ha!" That was such a sick work of geometry. I think my favorite part, however, had to be the way the geometry worked perfectly to force r3c4 to be exactly a 4. That was so cool to spot. I got stuck for a long time on which one in the middle box could be the 6 or 7. I finally found a cool way when I saw that 3 in r3c7 could only exist in which 6 is in r4c4. This forced 7 in r4c4 to take a 5 in r3c7, which would force a 3 into r2c6 and a 1 into r5c8. This breaks as both a 1 and 3 see r6c6, which could only be a 1 or 3. From there is was simply using the knight's move, which I struggled with. This was an absolutely beautiful puzzle with some sick geometry. Great Puzzle!

Simon's solve was magnificent, as usual (and 5 times faster than mine), but in this case I found a slightly more elegant *break-in,* requiring a smaller amount of trial and error. In short: 🔹I focused on the *5-cage* in *box 3,* which has the smallest total and the smallest amount of options (similarly, the *15-cage* has max total and min number of options). 🔹I found its *2+3* option forced the other cages to be: 1+7 = *8* (by anti-knight) 2+4 = *6* (by sudoku) 5+7 = *12* (by anti-knight) 6+9 = *15* (by sudoku) 3+8 = *11* (by sudoku) 🔹I figured out that this configuration was impossible as it ruled out the central digit (r5c5) from both *box 4* and *box 6,* by anti-knight. Hence: 1+4 = *5,* in *box 1.* 🔹Now you know that the 12-cage cannot be 4-8 (by antiknight) and you can focus on the *15-cage...*

I mean, the setter seems to love row and column limits. At 40:20 when you are stuck like that. Just look at what digits are placed in a row that's two away from another. Like, row 5. You have an awful lot of digits in that row, but very few in row 3. The 7 in row 3 can be placed by knights logic from R5C2 and R4C6. And the fact the ten cage can't have a 7. And then you always have the opportunity to miss a knights move. For example, R4C6 sees R2C7. Which is why you have to be EXTRA vigilant when doing variant sudoku.

It's just that Simon likes REM and "That's 3 in the corner" reminded him of "That's me in the corner" - hence the song whenever he finds a 3 in the corner. If this video had been recorded recently the song would have been "Oh Christmas Three" instead, which shows that this was a pre-recorded video. Some folks don't like the "losing its religion" so sometimes the 3 in the corner is "proving its position" instead.

At 40:00 the square you are working on couldn't be 3 as sudoku and knights move eliminate 3 from both squares in the ten cage in box 2 making it add up to 12 in a 10 cage this would not work

Why does it take so long for Simon to clear superfluous highlighting, when Mark does it the moment he is finished with it. I know he loves all the colours, but it just clutters up the grid, especially in Fog puzzles. And then, a few seconds after doing it at 34 mins, he starts again with a blue 2 and an orange 57.
@zirco77
@zirco77 Ай бұрын
Actually, Simon was much quicker than usual to clear colors this time, I was a bit surprised. He even often let them through the end. Mark and Simon simply have a different solving style.
@johnhumberstone9674
@johnhumberstone9674 Ай бұрын
@@zirco77 It has nothing to do with solving style. I still haven't worked out what the benefit of making 2, blue, was meant to be, let alone making all the 2s, blue at the end.

Especially in antiknight-puzzles colouring helps me to find the forbidden cells. Maybe Simon doesn!t need these colours for himselve, but he uses them to illustrate his thoughts to us. Keep on colouring, Simon!

@@ilsekleibscheidel7219 I understand that, and perfectly reasonable. The question is about why he keeps them there long after they have served their purpose, such that they then distract from the solve.

39:25 in ... the orange square is a 57. Great. Look up at box 2. Orange cannot go into column 4 by sudoku, column 5 already has a five in it. So could there be a seven? It could only fit it in the first row. However... by knight's move, that would eliminate all possibilities of placing a seven in row two. So orange must be in column 6. And by sudoku it's got a 7 looking at it. Totally not easy to spot, certainly not on the moment.

Puzzle appears to be defective. I see 6 two cell cages, that are interacting via anti-knight, but even if I could, say, determine what pair of digits goes in each cage, wouldn't it be unsolvable because I don't think I'd be able to place a cell and clear any fog. Am I missing something understanding wise? Defective grid? If I don't have a defective grid, I'm about to learn something revolutionary, because this looks patently unsolvable. Seriously, is a line missing or something?

Ah, just glanced at the vid via the hover over the go to different times bar and saw him coloring the central square. It's the geometry of the central square that has to appear in alternate cages in boxes 4 & 6. Who knows how many eons that would've taken me to suss out.
