I just wanted to say that a couple of weeks ago, the youtube algorithm put you on my home page, and I'm so glad it did! At first I just watched you solve the puzzles, and then I started pulling them up and following along, and the past several days I'll pull up the puzzle and pause you (sorry) while I do what I can, then unpause you when I'm stuck and need your wisdom to get unstuck (and then I pause you again, sorry). My 8yo daughter has watched some of your videos with me and is now interested in sudoku. And as a high school math teacher, I just love all the math tips you share in the videos.

Should be 37,6% for at least one 3 in any corner. Because you calculate the chance that not a 3 (8/9) is in all 4 corners (so to the power 4), and subtract that from 1 (i.e. 100%): 1 - (8/9)^4 = 0,3757... = 37,6%
@swingardium706
@swingardium706 Жыл бұрын
@@Leeuw96 that's the method I used too, but don't forget that the corners affect one another! Once one corner is not a 3, the corners it sees are more likely than usual to be a 3 because they see the value from the first corner. My result has been verified by a friend of mine who wrote a bunch of code to check millions of valid grids. I haven't checked his code, but I do trust his abilities - and it gave an estimation within 0.5% of my calculated value. I'll post the full breakdown of the maths if you'd like?

This is the first FoW that I've not done. Not because it's too hard, but because it's not colour-blind friendly. I couldn't even make the first deduction, because I couldn't be certain that the two circles were the same colour. Colour perception is context sensitive, which is why a famous optical illusion shows what appears to be red strawberries but they are actually grey. The different cage colours were sufficient to give each circle a different enough context, to suggest they may be different (albeit badly chosen) colours. Another example is that the sun is white, but it appears yellow because it's on a background of blue.

This is a great point. I wonder if they could include symbols in the box dashed lines and along lines to support colour blindness.

I always find it interesting how differently I approach puzzles from Simon. Like in the beginning, I saw the visible digit on the green line had to be a 4, but didn't consider how far the line went (which I could see once I got the 4). Even after solving the puzzle, it's still really helpful to see Simon solve it to see the alternative strategies and pathways I could've taken to the same solution!

I finished in exactly 23:00 minutes. It was a little hard to see that the 6 cage was three cells long, but once I saw that, I went going. This was very fun utilizing the double arrow to worm my way around the fog. I was so excited when I found the first shoe and even more excited to find the final shoe with a 3 inside of it. As always, it feels good to beat Simon's time. Great Puzzle!

This one was really really fun. I often like fog puzzles, as they tend to be a bit more accessible (with so much less possible to look at). This is my favorite of them so far, though, using the very neat color addition, as well as the double-headed arrows which I'd never seen. I strongly suspect I couldn't have done this puzzle if it HAD been revealed.

17:07 I agree that shading is almost always bad for fog puzzles (even when it seems distinguishable it can hide isolated unrevealed cells, this has burned Simon in the past), so perhaps pen tool to outline the known cage shape like this would have been a good idea here?
@LithmusEarth
@LithmusEarth Жыл бұрын
I ALWAYS want him to just DRAW the borders with the pen, like make his cages, its always what i assume he's going to do, and then he shades, and I go, oh?! BUT the trick is the shading has no borders, whereas penning, absolutely puts in a border potentially that could be a problem, but when you know the exact size of the cage it shouldn't matter. I just it keeps happening with these fog puzzles, I keep expecting the pen-tool.

For all the OCDs out there, we have confirmation at 39:18 that Simon is using different software than us. It's always bugged me that his green was different than what I was seeing. I don't know about the shoe, but it's possible to customise the colour palettes within the software, and we saw Simon do this in an old video when the functionality was first released. So different colour palettes mean nothing.

At 27:30, instead of using the 'B' label, it might be clearer to use a letter such as 'F', far enough away from A and B. That way, you can reserve 'B' for the 8/9 digits you know are not A (such as r8c4). With this approach, the r7c2 cell can then be labeled 'G'.
