** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We featured some easier puzzles a couple of weeks ago that were still absolutely amazing in terms of their logic. Here's another in the same vein. It's called Uniquely Paired Dots and it's by vidarino. It might not take you long but you'll enjoy every minute you spend in its company.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive. Digits separated by a black dot have a ratio of 1:2 (ie one digit is double the other). Digits separated by a green dot differ by at least 5. A pair of digits can only appear once for each dot colour. (E.g. there can only exist one 1-2 pair with a white dot in-between, but there can exist a 1-2 pair with a black dot in addition, since it's a different dot colour.)

Yay, what a fun surprise! Thanks for solving my puzzle! :) It's probably my easiest, as well as highest rated, so I'm pretty happy with this one. :) (And it's not really my debut, as I've had a few features before, but it's been quite a while, so I don't blame you one bit for not remembering. :) )

This was a beautiful puzzle! I definitely had a different break-in (using the strings of white dots to get a disjointed 2468 quadruple in their centers and a disjointed 1234 quadruple next to them (and reducing those using the green dots and parity). I'm not sure if that was the intended solve-path, but it felt very intricate and elegant. Thank you! 🙂

There is an strange pleasure in getting something 3-4 moves before Simon. The fact he discovers 4-5 other things you never even thought of while shouting at the screen, is irrelevant. 😃

The runs of white dots in this rule set can be broadly defined if not placed before any other solving - since the pairs can't repeat, those runs cannot overlap and so have to be 123, 345, 567, and 789. (This also comes with the bonus deduction that the centers of those runs will always be even and the ends always odd...)

Yes, and once you know the runs for the white dots, you know what goes on the black dots...1:2 has to go with 123, 2:4 must be with 345, 3:6 with 567, and 4:8 with 789. It may have taken a bit longer, but I figured out there were only 5 positions where 5 could go on a run of white dots...it had to be on an end that wasn't a green dot.

18:20 I love moments like this where he determines r3c3 and r2c4 would be forced to be the same digit based on r2c3's value, thus restricting what r2c3 can be, while completely oblivious to the effect that has on r2c4.

21:44 what a lovely puzzle! It's easy to overlook the "unique dots" rule, especially on the white dots, but once I got some high/low logic from the black/green dots in columns 3 and 4, it wasn't TOO difficult. Really smooth puzzle overall.

It was really cool that every possible dot pair was used/needed and how they interacted to give a pretty smooth solve path. Also Simon didn't need to know that every green dot was used until the moment when he figured that out so not realizing it earlier wouldn't have changed the solve path at all.

I loved this puzzle so much that I paused before he even started the solve, and figured it out in just over 20 minutes. Some logic: When a setter of a puzzle says "there can be only one (x constraint)", count how many possible combinations of that constraint are possible and how many are on the grid. Hint: all 10 valid green pairs, 4 black pairs, and 8 white pairs are represented. I personally write "cheat sheets" of any significant combinations in variant sudokus. The white runs of dots must be consecutive and nonoverlapping (123, 345, 567, 789) The black dots always involve the middle of each white run (1 must flank 123, 2 must flank 345, 3 must flank 567, 4 must flank 789) The green dot "corners" on two of the four Whiteruns restrict both of those to 123 or 345, orients the 123 to avoid repeating a green pair, and orients the 345 because 5 can't be in a green pair. Only 1 green pair may involve a 4 or 6, which restricts where on the grid you can place them once those pairs are identified. No 5s may be in a green pair, period.

Solved in 49:32 and enjoyed it a lot! The challenge was all about keeping track of which dot pairs were already used up and avoiding any possible repeats, but once I got a good handle on it, everything flowed pretty smoothly. It also didn't hurt that I've recently been working my way through the domino Sudokus in the CTC app so my brain is more attuned than usual to the Kropki logic.

Finished in 28:38, what an awesome puzzle! My break-in was by noticing the consecutive dots had to be 123, 345, 567, 789 which put 2468 in the middles, forcing the other halves of the black dots to be 1234 😀
@parkerbond9400
@parkerbond9400 Жыл бұрын
Mine was similar but I initially realized the left 2 group of dots used the 12345 white dots (because of the green dots affecting what that middle black dot cells could be) and the right 2 groups of dots used the 56789 white dots. Which gave R3C4 and R6C3 as a 24 pair and R4C7 and R7C6 as a 68 pair.

I did this break in sort of the opposite from Simon. I placed the middle digits of the triples then followed them around over black dots, green dots, then to the consecutive restriction. It did help to keep track of which green combos were taken from pretty early on as well. That said, Simon is still much quicker than I am, so it didn't matter much in his solve. It's interesting and novel logic. I enjoyed it.

Very neat puzzle combining every combination of white, black and green dots. As others have said the start is very easy if you start with the white dots (noting middle cell of each run must be even), then the black dots. Sorting out the green dots was a bit more difficult - just need to keep track of what were already done, or forced options and eliminate digits in the other green dot dominoes.

24:45 SIMON First, the 49 pair in box 1 is resolved by the nine in R7C2 And since the remaining green dot pairs all have a one on them, you have an X-wing of 1's in rows eight and nine. This places a 1 in R7C5. The green dot in box nine is the only one that can hold a 9 digit due to there being a 9 in R2C1 that sees the other two. Also, since there is definitely a 1 in row one placed in box seven. R5C1 cannot be a 1.

I found it quite approachable. Made a mistake eliminating 1 from box 5 on my first attempt. Finished 2nd attempt in 20:18 so I'd guess 25 min total. Immediately recognized the constraint on the white dots being runs of 3 that had to start and end with odd digits. That identified the contents of the black dot cells off the white dot runs all being low. This made the center of the green dot triples being high. This led to a 1, 2 pair in column 3 which gave the location of 4 in the column. Then it was off to the races.

After a mishap because I repeated the 1-7 green dot in box 9, although I knew I had it already on row 2, I managed to complete the puzzle. The opening had me twisting my brain a bit, but the middle could only be even, so the could only be low on the left part, etc.

The real breakthrough comes in seeing all possible dots are used, for all colors/varieties. Simon explained early on the 4 black dots are 1-2, 2-4, 3-6, 4-8. The white dots are all 123, 345, 567, 789. And all the green dot possibilities are represented; 1-6, 1-7, 1-8, 1-9, 2-7, 2-8, 2-9, 3-8, 3-9, 4-9. That's all 10 green dots. I got more stuck on the Sudoku than I did the ruleset.

There are other tallest mountains as well. As I understand it, the tallest mountain in terms of height above the surrounding landscape would be Denali / Mt McKinley. And in terms of height from the base when the base is underwater is in Hawaii, but I don't remember the name of the mountain.

1 finished it. 86:27 with thinking I had not understood how the white, black, green dots interacted. It wasn't until I found an error in pencil marking that messed me up. But I just had to chip away at it.

21:30 + 3:16 playing on my phone = 24:46. Surprised by my time as I was just staring wondering where the start was before realizing certain digits on the black dots made certain digits on the white dots impossible with the negative constraint.

It took me a while, but I managed the puzzle. 6:40 On the contrary, every possible green dot is also given: 9-1234, 8-123, 7-12, and 6-1, giving ten total combinations. Also, the cells between two white dots must be even: 123, 345, 567, 789. 14:50 R2C4 has to be 3 to avoid repeating a green-dot pair. 17:15 The grid looks very familiar.

Realising this right away made the puzzle a little easier to solve imo with all possibilities on a cheatsheet and ticking them off whenever I found one

Simon did realize that every green dot was used right at the time it became needed/useful. Before that point you just need to realize how uniqueness affects the 2 green dot pairs at R2C3 and R7C2.

Just shy of 20 minutes for me. Very nice puzzle. Though now I'm thinking about other dot possibilities. For example Blue Dots: Every pair of blue dots sum to the same total.

Solved on my own! Beautifully made puzzle, fun all the way through. While it is certainly approachable, it probably still takes quite a bit of variant sudoku knowledge to break into, though. Given the whole puzzle seems to assume that the solver knows each possible variation of digits that can go onto those dots, being able to use those white dot chains with the whisper dots to hack away at the options of the leftmost black dots might take quite a bit more thinking for someone who isn't used to them. Mighty fun puzzle, though, would highly recommend this one!

The only time Simon really needed to use the full set were the two moments "I've run out of 2s to place on green" and "every remaining green has a 1". Otherwise the starting groups of 5 doesn't really use the uniqueness. I got through most of the puzzle before realizing that any of the sets of dots were complete.

@@HalfHeartGames Didn't watch the video so I dunno how Simon solved it. I know I'm not quite at his level, so that could contribute as why I felt this one to not be quite "beginner's first sudoku experience", but when I was playing this one at least it just felt like it would be quite a bit more difficult if you weren't used to how all the dots work and interacted, is all. I didn't mean it as a critique of the puzzle or anything, hope that makes sense :D

This was very fun to solve! I had a very different break-in, which made the solve a bit easier for me. ---------- Because of the uniqueness rule, the strings of white dots had to be 123, 345, 567, and 789 (to both ensure that there are no repeated pairs and to make sure there were enough 3-digit runs). This placed a disjointed 2468 quadruple in the centers of each run of three dots. From there, the uniqueness of the black dots required that each pair was represented, which forced a corresponding 1234 quadruple (also disjointed) in R3C3, R3C7, R7C3, and R7C7. Using the polarity of the neighboring green dots and the parity of the white-dot sequences, these could be reduced in columns 3 and 4 which got me my first few digits fairly quickly. I'm not sure if that was the intended solve path, but it felt incredibly elegant.
