Thank you for this. Shout out to my friends in the CORE! This was my pick. It's one of favourite Cradle Of Filth songs of all time. We all know the legend of Countess Bathory. I know it's terrible, but it's Cradle Of Filth and they draw on stuff that happened and Cruelly and the beast is one of the best concept album's of all time! She was spared the fate of her accomplises, She was literally walled up in her tower. Also, the line "in an age crucified by the nails of faith" is a reference to a song earlier in the album called "the twisted nails of faith" where she literally makes a pact with a demon to keep her youth, which ties into the reference with demons coming for her in her end days. Each song of this album is like a chronological chapter in Bathorys life. I could chop this up and talk for an hour on this. This is in my opinion Dani Filths lyrical Opus!! It's a story of 3 parts and this song takes you on a journey. I love that you got into it and I'm so glad you guys liked it!

Vin, if you want more of the high-level theological poetry (as in 'Tearing the veil from grace') you really should react to 'Death Magick For Adepts' from the album Midian. At some point though you should also make yourself a gift and react to their whole "Damnation and a day" bible-and-Milton inspired concept album. It's worth it. The gothic horror stuff is also cool but nothing beats the depth of the concept-intensive ones.

The fate of most concept albums. Music will always take a backseat. In this case, with Cradle, where he has to get through pages and pages of the lyrics it's only more exacerbated. I wouldn't even call most of the pieces "songs" - they're more a kind of "recitativo" (the parts in the opera where the performers rattle off the libretto in a sort of speaksinging over some marginal accompaniment).

Apparently there are a lot of scholars who believe she was framed. The Bathory family was wealthy and influential, and the king owed her a great deal of money (due to her husband having been chief commander of the Hungarian troops in the war against the Ottomans). In short, she was framed as a means for the king to get out of having to pay his debt.

30:00 this bit around here... I think the Briers are general society & also the typical ups & downs that make life. As they are a plant, but not necessarily favored, they carry a mundane function or evolved to have a function from events past. She's sorting through the hum drum of life and being a Countess, who may have been quite the socialite "whirlwind of fire"; who apparently favored her looks but felt cheated, having knowledge that her treasured looks could eventually fade... Stumbling upon the Rose... The idea that if she took her youth, from the youth of others, she committed with her own blood/energy "grasping a black thorn" and forming a soul pact upon her first follow through of her string of acts, drawing the blood of others, that would lead to you doing this video 😋

A few years late to this party, 5 years. This just popped up in my feed. This is actually a very nuanced tale. Cradle handles the topic with the most open mind I know of, meaning Dani did his research. There are many thoughts on the veracity of the history we are taught. This is a particular piece of history that may have had parts twisted quite a bit. Facts: A widow of what is by all historic accounts an extremely abusive relationship Now develops Sapphic tendencies. At that point in time (saying nothing about location), her simply being a female in power without a husband to "reign her in" would have been considered heresy. Her "accomplices" were pretty much exclusively female or unich. She was generally scared of men after spousal abuse as well as being set up to be SAed by her husbands direct subordinate (this caused a miscarriage). The reason she stayed in power as long as she did was because the people loved her. She brought prosperity through policy. Hence, the number of people sending their daughters to become castle maids This brings us to her crimes. Oddly, outside of one person's report to the neighboring fief, little was known about what was actually going on. This leads some to believe the whole thing was a setup. Personally, I have the thought of "where there is smoke." That aside, the neighboring fief happened to be one that was in a state of conflict with her late husband. Some even posited that this led to his death. By no account does this mean she was innocent of everything. At the end of the day, her "crimes" may have been HEAVILY embellished. Some claims have her as the most prolific serial killer of all time (around 400 or so). Others have her at a number below, dear old Jack, with enough to fit on a hand. Think T.P.O. most nobles, this place and time would have a higher kill count, making her rather lenient by comparison. Some go so far as to theorize that she was walled in the tower rather than beheaded for not wishing to remarry into a position of concubine to the neighboring Count. Whatever the case, there is more to this story than meets the eye. To take it at just face value means we forget that there are always 3 sides to history. The winner, the loser, the truth. They almost never match up. This is why research is so difficult because the winner writes the history book. Ok, this is too long, as is. I could probably write a whole book on this one case study alone.

That part of the song, I always thought that all the bodies that were buried in the snow, wolves dug them up and thus this the people found out what she was doing thus the murder of crows came back to haunt her.

some of the victims were servants, but mostly, back then, parents from common families would have their children work in the house of a noble as pages and servants in order to get some sense of prestige to the family. "hey, my child works for this noble. respect, please" or some such. the children work in the noble's house; other times, children - especially girls, and especially in Elizabeth Bathory's case - were also sent to these nobles to learn etiquette and to act like proper ladies despite their background. They were taken in with that idea in mind, but she didn't lecture them at all.
