In this video we craft a leather holder for a Light My Fire ferro rod. There are many ways in which you can make them. This is an easy way, which can be done with minimal tools. Thanks for watching.

I can't say enough good things about this video! It has taught me many things and clarified a few others. Thank you!! Once I get the proper tools my work will improve immensely. Excellent teacher. If you wanted to film this in your house, we wouldn't mind. That was a long time in the cold. All the best!!

Hey there Mark. It was my pleasure 🙂 You bet I'm going to try my hand at this...I found making firesteel handles from interesting wood quite enjoyable, so I have a couple of them now just waiting for holders to live in. After all, this will turn them to being a nice presents to give out to friends. And seeing it done is way better than reading and theorizing about it, so thank you for making the video 😊

Hi G P, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍. Once you have made one or two, they are quite easy to make. Plus they are a handy to thing to have, especially if you have no loop on a knife sheath. Have a great week ahead..... stay safe, all the best, Mark 😀.

Hi Northwales Bushcrafter, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) You should give it a try sometime. It is one of those skills that is soon picked up. Once you have mastered the basics, you can pretty much make whatever you need. A nice relaxing pastime, certainly for this time of the year. Have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Sel, I hope you are keeping well mate. Yeah, they will make a great gift and quite easy to do once you know the sequence. When I first started I would end up gluing something or tap holes in something, then realise that I should of done something else before. Then end up starting again lol. Thanks again Sel, have a great day my friend, all the best, Mark. :)

Great video Mark. I've seen McQ Bushcraft Carry it for many years now and it looks like a useful leather craft to have. Especially if you don't have a ferro rod holders on the side of your knife sheath and you want the ferro rod on your person. It looks stunning my friend. Very neat and clean. Thanks for the video. - Josh

Hi Josh, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yeah, that was the reason I made one. I had that knife from Ben Orford and it didn't have a loop on the sheath. Plus I take it when I use my bushcraft black. Again there is no loop on that sheath. I've seen Mikes, they are stunning. Looking at his website I think he sells them with a rod for about £100. A bit to pricey for me. But I'm sure with the work he puts into them, they are worth every penny. Thanks again Josh, have a great week, all the best, Mark.

I really like the explanation on the leathers. Brave man making it outdoors, good though. I’ll definitely be having a go at making one myself so well done for putting this up. I presume that elastics is available on Amazon? Really enjoying your vids so keep em coming please.

Hi Alan, sorry for the late reply. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes, you can get the elastic off either eBay or amazon. Leather lace also makes a nice alternative, but the elastic is easier as you don't need a cord lock to retain it in the holder. Thanks again, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Dave, yeah I think I have seen some of Paul's work, he makes some nice looking gear. I know the feeling mate. I'm in the same boat, but the other way around. I had a couple of spare rooms that I used to use. One for fly tying and keeping my rods in for work, and another for general kit storage. But after moving back home to help look after my stepdad, I have to keep things packed up and pull them out as and when. If your ever making anything to sell, please let me know. Have a great day mate, all the best, Mark. :)

All I can say is AWESOME! Mark, I think your fantastic mate. I always look forward to your videos and your content, always enjoyable, entertaining & informative! I'm fascinated with leather craft and you have definitely inspired me to have a go. Thankyou for your creativity, I would love one of your pieces. Could you make one that could also hold a small UK legal folding knife? That could be belt or neck carry? Keep up the great work, take care & stay safe out there!!!

Hi Wandering Woody, many thanks for watching and for the kind words, it is very much appreciated. I'm glad that you like the videos :) My skill levels aren't at the point of making knife sheaths at the moment. I made a quick one for my Victoriniox Farmer that I carry, but the end result wasn't that great to be honest. It is all new to me at the moment. I've only been doing it for about 8 months so still making rookie mistakes lol. When the time comes that I am happy with the end result, I will be more than happy to help you out and make a sheath for you. If you want to email at markbay@hotmail.com I have got a spare ferro rod holder I can send you. I don't want anything for it, it can be a gift. It is only a small one for a light my fire sized rod, but its your if it is any good for you. All the best, Mark.

Hi Mark. Nice to see you! Sry I got here a bit late... I've been thinking about making these myself, but I never got to actually acquiring the tools needed. I've seen some beginners leather work kits on amazon but they are and look a bit cheap... I'm really liking the ones you are making, and yes I have seen similar before :) Anyway thanks for the inspiration and I might make some as well, who knows. As always, great content and I hope you are keeping well brother, take care!
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, I hope you are keeping well brother. Yeah I've seen loads of different types knocking about. I came across something similar at the bushcraft show last year and people wanted up to £60 each for them. I thought it was cheaper to buy a few tools and the leather and make it myself. I started off with one of the kits. I paid about £35 for it and I probably use half of what came. Some i binned, but the edge tool, the groover and stitch irons I kept as they can be quite pricey to buy individually. I didn't want to spend a lot on it. But overtime I ended up buying bits here and there and the set soon build up. In my humble opinion a decant awl is worth its weight. Thanks again Ed, have a great day mate, all the best, Mark. :)

Hi Jason, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yeah sure. If you don't make one, I have got a couple made for an 1/2" rod. I've got a black holder with tan stitching and a brown holder with orange stitching (the one in the video near the end). I will hopefully be getting some more leather next week, so if you want a different coloured thread I can make you one when it comes. My email address is markbay@hotmail.com if you need to contact me. Thanks again Jason, all the best, Mark.

You are personally one of my favorite KZbinrs .. very detailed filming and information. Makes a leather project like this look so easy while in fact i struggled making mine (I used 1mm leather .. stupid me .. ). If you would be selling them .. do you have an idea of the price? ps. an outdoor cooking series would be nice as well :p
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathanael many thanks for watching and for the kind words, They are very much appreciated :) If I was selling them, I would keep the price down to a minimum. I suppose the small LMF sized holder would be about £10.00 (not sure how much that is in euros) and the larger ones I would sell for about £20. That would just cover the cost of the leather and a bit for the time. Good call on doing an outdoor cooking series. I'm not the best cook in the kitchen at home, but I will defiantly see what I can do in the neat future. Thanks again Nathanael, all the best, Mark. :)

No problem Nathanael, I will get it sent over to you. If you can email me you postal address again please I have just checked my old emails and I can't scroll down that far for some reason. My email is markbay@hotmail.com Yeah, I could make you one to fit as long as I had the measurements. Or the best thing to do would be to send me a rod, so I can make it to the rod itself.
