In this video I will be making a leather holder for my Swedish Firesteel. I wet form the leather and then copper rivet and saddle stitch it together to create a secure belt or neck hung loop to keep a ferocerium rod safe and secure. This is a project I've been meaning to complete for ages and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Excellent Simon! (you really are a "Crafty" devil) Now all I need to do is buy: leather, wax, rivets, setting tool, thread, needles, the rolling cutter, the pronged thing, a few other tools, and bits and bobs, build the clamping tool .... I guess I'll have to make a "stuff to give me for my birthday and Christmas list" and distribute it widely. ;}

So. I watched the first video, bought my XL ferro rod, even bought some (expensive...) horn and I'm aaaaall ready to go. And now this....I NOW need to source some leather, tools, rivets, needles, waxed cotton, various creams and polishes..... Is there no end to your skills and talent? I just know mine is going to turn out like a dogs breakfast but I'll have great fun making it and if I can keep all my fingers in one piece I'll have succeeded! You truly are (and I hate this word..) inspirational Simon. I'm learning loads from you and I'm enjoying my new "apprenticeship! Thanks.

I loved this video! It was surprisingly satisfying and even calming to watch and at the same time, inspiring! I’m not good at making stuff. My father was, but he had a vicious temper on him, so I never picked up any of his (many) skills. But after watching you make this, I’m encouraged to go out and buy all those tools and have a go myself. You are an inspiring teacher. It’s another of your many skills. A lot of people can make things, but cannot teach others. Your calm way of showing each stage of the process is SO good! I’m beginning to think that even I can accomplish some of these things …. and that is saying something! Thank you very much for your videos. I’m going to be watching all of them from now on.

FYI, you can saddle stitch with one needle (freeing your other hand to hold your work) by stitching one way, then turning around at the last stitch and threading the opposite way.

Great video Simon, the loop came out really nice and those copper rivets give it something special. I got a tip a couple years ago watching Sandy at Jacklore Knives, he uses a piece of scrap leather under his work when using the pricking iron. I didn't take his advice at first and broke my first one. I'm gonna be shameless now and ask you where you got the stitching groover from? If you don't mind my asking, haha, it looked alot smoother than what I'm using. Hope all is well with you and yours. Thank-you for the shout-out and take care, buddy, thanks for sharing.

Cheers Andy and thanks for the tip for using the pricking iron! I got the groover from Tandy leather, it’s a free hand stitching groover and pretty decent - not too expensive either. I’m pretty pleased with how it came out, looks even better now everything’s dried out properly - nothing close to the quality of your holders though!! 😉 cheers mate.
