Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

I lived and worked in Japan in the 90s, and it was then that I first saw Sanada-san's acting. He quickly became one of my favorite actors in Japan. Since then, I've been excited to watch his career growing in Japan and overseas. This new project is a great achievement for him. Congratulations to Sanada-san and the entire team working with him to bring the novel, Shogun, to life.

Glad Mr. Sanada is getting more recognition for his work in the film industry. I only know a small portion of his work, mainly in the US. But I did see Twilight Samurai when I was just starting to get into Japanese film. He's been one of my favorite, "That guy" actors, and I'm glad for a lot of people he is no longer "That guy" but a distinguished talent and force in the film industry.

Hiroyuki Sanada is with no doubt the worthy successor of legend Toshirō Mifune. Playing the same character was an evidence.

He truly is a legend. To me he ranks up there with Toshiro Mifune. Such a wonderful person, actor, and so much more. I would imagine he would be great to sit and chat with.

This is a masterpeice so far. I hope more people give it a chance. Hiroyuki Sanada is a legend. So glad he finally gets a true leading role in America with great writing. Makes sence the show is so good if he is a producer aswell.

Sidenote: Tadanobu Asano and Fumi Nikaido are very humble and deferential in this interview, yet their screen time acting has already shown they are pretty much on the way of being at the level of Sanada's skills (compared to since Nikaido wasn't really given much in Vivant). This cast is really impressive.
