Many Craftsman's were built my MTD, which owns Troy-Bilt so I could see how that aftermarket TB carb would possibly work. The issue was when I originally searched for parts I couldn't find anything aftermarket using the OEM 696949 carburetor part number. But I wanted to include that aftermarket one in the video, as something you could use as an option, because it could help someone else out!

MTD, makes A L O T of yard engine tools. Most, are under any other name: Crapsman, er craftsman, b & s, Yard machines; yard works, etc. THE part numbers, of MTD stuff, always has 3 digits, then a hyphen, and the rest of the number. BE CAREFULL, chinese clones of most all yard ' stuff '' is usually interchangeable. Like pull starter mechanisms, for lawnmowers; MTD mower ones, can be put on some Honda engines, etc. Inter change with spark plugs, etc.

I just finished working on a Ryobi 4 stroke trimmer . Only had to do fuel lines , and adjust carb . Runs great . Great video , keep them coming .
@watermanone75674 жыл бұрын
Great job. Some of those carbs have a plastic or metal plug in the center of the throttle shaft that can be removed and the carb adjusted. Some don't. I had one in my shop that I could not get parts for and I removed the plug and under it was an adjustment screw. I got lucky on that one. Thanks for excellent video's.

I realize that this was for video content but it’s just not feasible to fix a $225 USD value trimmer with a $100 carburetor. I received one of these as a gift. The first thing I noticed is that it was extremely heavy and bulky. The second thing was that you can’t even tilt one of these even slightly like when trimming a ditch or hill without it dumping oil through the breather hose. This saturates the air filter even at the correct level oil level and smokes like a freight train. Don’t even think about trying to turn it upside down to edge because of the same issue. The recoils are very weak and the plastic starter pawls broke several times. I thought that my 2 cycle had way more power although theoretically it shouldn’t have. My first Echo 2 cycle lasted 17 years while this lasted about 17 months. I wouldn’t sell it for any amount because the customer will not be happy it.

As I am faced with replacing the carb on one of these, I watched this video with interest. I found a walbro carb on ebay pretty cheap (it was $18.11+$16.15 shipping - ) not sure if it is a counterfeit knockoff, but it does have "Walbro" cast into the side of it. I noticed these do have a visible low speed adjustment screw as well as a hidden high speed screw in the middle of the throttle shaft behind a plastic plug. There seem to be a lot of them up there sold from the US. Not sure if it is a new generation of these carbs, but thought you might find it noteworthy. Cheers!

A friend gave me a Stihl trimmer with issues. I took it apart to find the clutch area plastic somehow got overheated and melted near the pull-start. The plastic fan melted itself to the clutch. Parts cost more than a replacement unit. So it will be for salvage. I am anxious to see what you find rattling inside. Thanks J K

I would have went straight to cracking open the carb. #1 problem is a damaged diaphragm carb. I fixed one of these attached to a tiller shaft. One of the smallest flatheads I've seen. I bought a aftermarket carb for like 30 something dollars US on Ebay.

Got this new in 2005. Bought 6 add on attatchments. Just stopped running 3 weeks ago. Replaced carb, have spark, 60 lb compression, cleaned coil & flywheel magnets, reset airgap. Valves look good cleaned out muffler & spark arrestor, new spark plug, air filter. Still wont start, not even a puff! Could it be a timing issue? I am totally stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have watched countless videos and still nothing! Great video by the way!
@EliminatorPerformance2 ай бұрын
@@thomastrotier4267 hmm, spray some carb cleaner into the engine and see if it fires and dies. If it does, then the carb isn't supplying fuel. When you remove the plug it should be slightly wet or at least smell like fuel. Otherwise, if it doesn't fire you may have a compression issue, 60lbs seems low. But it could have a compression release, a leak down test would be better.
@thomastrotier42672 ай бұрын
@@EliminatorPerformance thanks for the quick response. I tried starting fluid in the carb...nothing. tried it in the Cylinder, nothing not even a puff. Not sure how to do a leak down test. Was thinking of filling the Cylinder with seafoam or PB Blaster and put the plug back in, let it soak a few days then suck out the fluid to see it the ring made stuck thus increasing the compression ( before I remove the head,) Could it be a timing issue, bad coil ( tester shows spark... but is at the right time) read about sheared woodruff key but recoil works fine. Not sure this unit has one on flywheel either. I found out this is a rare Briggs & Statton engine , hard to find parts for. Can you explain how to do a leak down? Thanks again !
@EliminatorPerformance2 ай бұрын
@@thomastrotier4267 at the beginning of that video I do one, you could likely find better videos. You'll need a leak down tester tool, and you basically pressurize the cylinder with the valves closed and see where air is leaking. 10% Air loss through the piston rings is acceptable, and you'll hear that out of the dipstick/valve breather tube because air goes past the piston rings into the crankcase. So at 100psi that would mean the cylinder should hold 90psi and have a loss of 10psi. At 50psi pressure, you should only lose about 5psi. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmHGoGuCq8mkp6csi=sbqoXHzB3FH7CCoq

Alot of times, the diaghram is gummed up. This, does the same job for a 2 stroke, as a float/needle valve in a regular carb. Trimmers are a ' special ' type/different carb design. The primer bulb, is more of a 'purge' of gas, than a pump; which is why there is a fuel 'return' line. No excess gas, to flood,when the carb is functioning properly.

There are adjustments on the oem but they are hidden under an epoxy cap. Center line of the barrel on the linkage side is the brass end with a hole in the middle of it. Under that expo you cap is the adjustment screw. It's hidden due to government regulations of not wanting you to adjust it possibly causing pollution.
