Dewalt 12 1/2" planer is on clearance at Lowes for $329. I bought a Grizzly 13" helical head planer used at an auction for $350. There is an incredible difference between straight knives and helical head carbide cutters. Grizzly is definitely the way to go, especially if you can find one used.

WOW, thanks for doing a REAL review and actually using it for 6 months.. and understand and know what your talking about when you show us how to use it.. Can't stand a review where they unbox. and just tell you without reading the manual or using it for a week or two at least.. ONLY WAY to do a real review is over time! using the machine.. seeing how it operates under stress etc.. I'll definitely be adding one of these to my list!!

Hey Derek, thanks for sharing. My take on Craftsman has always been that they are geared to the casual homeowner, doing random projects from time to time, and based on my experience using their tools do not hold up to the commercial ones. I would really like to see a year end review to see how this tool, and others you have reviewed, held up your standards. Thanks, Al

Al I can certainly agree. I have the joiner and planer and so far they have held up pretty well. However they are getting used daily so we shall see. I will absolutely give an update in 6 months. Thanks for the input.

I can almost guarantee it the same build as my Ridgid minus the luxury features.... probably same motor and chassis, so it should function just as well. I think most of these are made in the same factory just different brand names on them. The Ridgid is $500 now

"Surprisingly heavy". Hahaha. I had to check myself for a hernia after unloading mine. However, I am delighted with it. I fully agree with your opinion. Also, it is, at this time, the least expensive thickness planer on the market...about $80 less than the Harbor Freight Bauer planer. I purchased mine because I am replacing rotten siding with cypress which is highly resistant to rot, but, as I purchase it from the sawmill, it is too thicker then the siding currently on my house. It exceeded my expectations.

I almost went in on the Bauer, with the HF 20% sale but this thing just sounds tighter. And I’m a simp for Craftsman. I’ll end up with this if Loews every pops a sale or I stop being lazy and upload my military discount to my account.

I have the money to spring for a Dewalt. It’s all the same, it’s just how much I’m putting into woodworking gear. What am I missing out on with the Dewalt? (All I’ve gathered from videos/comments is a couple inches of snipe) (Also the goal right now is not to sell any pieces, just make things for the house, learn the gear and enjoy the process)

Have you had problems with snipe with this? I just got one and getting a lot. Snipe is when it takes slightly more of a cut at the beginning 2 inches of the board and at the end of the boards.
