Craftsman T110 Riding Mower - auto fuel shut off solenoid failure

Experienced a new failure for my little riding mower, hope it can help someone with a similar problem.

Same mower same problem, if you need a quick cheap fix just run up to your local hardware store and get a manual in line cut off valve. It worked fine for me until I could order a new switch.

@@bobdare I didn't post this, but I'll try to explain. I assume your auto solenoid is stuck open and gas is running into your engine. Cut the line from the gas tank running to the carburetor and place the in-line cut off valve. Close the valve, put gas in the tank, open the valve and quickly start the engine. When you turn the mower off, quickly close the cut off valve. Did that make sense?

Thanks now I know what to do had exact same problem starter was hot also remember to disconnect battery my shut off silenced was super 🔥hot to the touch

Does your solenoid have a rubber stopper on it? The part I ordered didn’t come with the rubber stopper and now my gas tank just drains. Still can’t get it to stay started. Do you happen to know the part number for the solenoid? Thanks

Can't remember where I bought it, but here is the part number I found online, 846639 Fuel Shut-Off Solenoid for Briggs & Stratton Engine. To be double sure you can go to Repairclinic.com, type in your engine model and find the part.

Sorry to hear that. If you are unfamiliar with these types of repairs, I would encourage you to take it to a professional. First, you will need to order a new solenoid. If there is any gas left in the tank, remove the gas line from the carburetor and move it up high so it does not drain. Remove the power clip from the solenoid and unscrew it from the carburetor float cup, cup and solenoid will fall loose. Replace with new solenoid and screw up through the float cup and into the carburetor. Replace the gas line. If the gas has drained into the engine you will have to drain the engine though the oil drain port and then replace the oil. On first start it will smoke white smoke for some time then calm down and run OK. BE CAREFUL, you are dealing with electrical power and gasoline.

ok. How about having the opposite. I have gas in the tank but the engine will start for only a few seconds and die. This all happened after I cut the front yard and went to the back and it just died on me. Checked the filter and gas lines and they are all a go. I see that solenoid but couldn't understand what that was about. So I figure mine is in the shut position and not letting any fuel to enter the carb. I would have liked to have seen how you changed it.

Yes, it can stick closed as well as open. See the comment below where I describe how to change it. Let me know if you need any help.

Same just happened to me mowed front yard then it died , changed spark plug fuel filter took out plunger seems ok . But solenoid on bottom of plunger might be bad don't know

Did your mower look like the oil was overfilled? My parents recently bought the same mower and after about 3 months it died. Repair shop said they overfilled the oil. When we got it back the gas tank was empty , the oil was overfilled, I drained some oil to the dipstick full mark. Filled it with gas and couldn’t get the engine to even crank. Shortly after the fuel started leaking out of the air intake side of the carb where the intake tube mounts. I drained the gas and sent it back. They are saying it was overfilled with oil again and want to charge my mom another 200 bucks for service a second time. Trying to get some ideas before we go pick it up tomorrow

In my case all of the gas had drained into the engine, so the dipstick showed overfilled, but on the dipstick was a gas oil mixture that no one would confuse for just oil. What I would do is get my mower back, go to the hardware and get an "in line shut off valve" same size as the gas line to the carb. Install valve and close, drain oil, replace with new oil, fill gas tank, right before ready to start open in line valve and start engine, when finished close valve. If this works you can order the auto shut off and install.

I got the model number off the engine, went to www.repairclinic.com/, typed that in and it showed a list of most purchased parts and there it was.

Hmmm 🤔 didn’t know that was there…. You mean to tell me… Instead of a fuel shut off valve .. This selinoid was installed..??? OMG… Voltage regulated..!! I’ll keep a battery tender 1st… Man.. now I’m worried about my New purchase…!!! You know… I only see negative reviews after I’ve made the purchase… WTF😂..!!!
