Craftsman Wood Lathe
101.06242
This project was really quite fun. I was really quite lucky that the original lathe was so complete.
This lathe was located in Yorba Linda, Ca.
After being completed the lathe was moved to it's new owner in Bakersfield, Ca.

I have this exact lathe that my father restored. When he passed away my mother gave it to me. It's in perfect working order. My father turned many projects and now I will follow in his footsteps! By the way, great work in your video!

Oh I love the history with your lathe. they really are great tools. It's a somewhat simple but ver solid machine. Be patient and invest in an impact resistant face shield, especially when learning. Happy turning :)

You're very welcome. I hope it helps. These lathes are pretty straightforward. You should have an easy time. Once they're set it just takes a little oil each run and you're good to go.

OK - I have my 103.23070 model de-rusted, primed and painted and using your video much of the time. Thanks! Starting the rebuild, but building a nice bench for it first. I was able to order new sealed ball bearings to replace the old ones I, lol, ruined removing. You did a beautiful job!

Honestly the only thing that would have made this video better would be no music. Aside from that thank you!

Thanks for this! I have the exact same model. It was my Grandfathers and has sat in a basement for thirty years. I'm working on the restoration and your vid is a great resource. One question - where did you find the new oilers?

It's a bronze bearing set. If you have a metal lathe I would say you could just make them pretty easily but if not. Take the spindle and headstock to a machine shop and they will make them for you. It's a very easy procedure and the costs should be minimal.

i know chances of you seeing this are low. but what oiler's did you replace them with? im currently restoring this exact lathe and all is well but i too need oilers if they can be found.

Great job! How did you revise the tailstock to be able to handle a live center? My 1940 Powr-Kraft lathe could use one.

Great restore, have the same one without the extender sitting in my garage to restore. Right now I am making my controller for my treadmill motor for it with a rpm sensor. Once that's done and tested I am fully restoring it with the motor below it to save space. Might do a midnight crimson red on mine tho just to be different. Is the extender worth it? Do you think you'll utilize it more than not?

hummmm the beriing.....it sure seem like it should be on the inside of the pully box. when its on the outside and pressure is being put on the shaft the bering is doing nothing but free Spinning

Nice Restoration. I just received a 101.06242 that is need of some work but it has no motor. Do you have any recommendations as well as where could I find the appropriate four step motor pully?
@irestorationstudio7223
@irestorationstudio7223 3 жыл бұрын
Oh cool. Sure, the easiest place to find the pulley is eBay and anything under $25 would be good for it. The motor should be 1/4- 1/3 hp at 1725rpm. If you look around the craigslist kinds of places you can usually find them for $20-50. It's a solid lathe for sure. The models from the early 40's are nowhere near as good.

Amazing job! I was gifted one of these, that I intend to restore. Your video will be a huge resource for me! If you don't mind, what top coat color did you use?

Thank you for the kind words. It's "de 1606 Ford dark blue engine paint". Super close to the original color and quite durable.

what motor and belt did you use. I inherited one of these Lathes and I am in the process of restoring it. I have an old table saw motor, router and circular saw motor that I could use but I wasnt sure which one to go with.

Great video! I have the same lathe but its missing both of the bearings that yours has. Do you know what the ID is and the width on the bearings? I know the shaft is .75 but I'm having a hard time tracking down bearings.

Hi there, thank you for the kind words. It's a great lathe, for sure. I no longer have the lathe. It went off to a buyer just after the video was finished. I may have another one in my shop... I'll take a look to see today for you. Are you looking to make the bearings yourself or more trying to just buy a set? They are super easy to make if you have a metal lathe. Absolutely any metal shop can make them for you. So if you take you headstock in and have the shaft in hand they'll just turn them out for you. it should be pretty inexpensive. I'll get back today on the measurements if I have one back there. :)

Hey we're in luck, I have two more of them in my shop. The measurements I pulled were: right side (so towards the bed) id-.746, od .869, length 1.237 - Left side id .746, od .870, length 1.240. :)

Nice work. I have the same model number, slightly different parts. I'm currently fighting with getting the pointed tip out of the headstock shaft. It's jammed/rusted in. May need to purchase a new shaft. Any suggestions on where to buy parts?
@irestorationstudio7223
@irestorationstudio7223 2 жыл бұрын
Oh sure.... the shaft is completely hollow. Insert a phillips screwdriver into the other side, assuming it's long enough, it will make contact with the back of the pointed part that you're trying to remove. Then using light taps with a hammer it should come loose. You can spay some wd-40 or the like into the shaft to help if needed but it should come out.

With buying parts, they come up frequently on places like eBay and the like. What parts are you looking for?
@kalibbybee4764
@kalibbybee4764 2 жыл бұрын
I eventually got it out of the shaft. Wd-40 and like lubes did not work. Soaking in vinegar did though. Potentially need a new shaft and tip as they're both a bit worn. Maybe copper sleeves as well for the oilers. A few parts are just very marred.
