DIY Skirt with Elastic Tutorial | Easy and Simple

I didn't even need this project, but I did have trouble distributing elastic evenly when making skirts and sleeveless tops, and the sort. This method helped me even my fabric and elastic evenly. Thank you for posting and helping out a novice seamstress!

the elastic helps with the measurements for the width, (as seen in video) and the length can be anything length

no but are you using a zigzag stitch? that makes a huge difference cuz it allows the thread to stretch along with the elastic

I haven’t sewn since my grandma died 10 Years ago. I recently found some very cute fabric I want to make myself a skirt out of. This tutorial is super easy. I will be trying it very soon. I don’t want to sew without my grandma. I’m scared I’ll mess up, but that’s the learning process. All the other tutorials I found are complicated and not that easy. This is so simple. i would do the elastic last and attach it to the dress or you can do the same to the top by stretching the shirt part to sew the elastic just like you do to the skirt part :)

You've kind of just saved me from having wasted a bunch of money on fabric lol I work in a fabric store and I'm trying to get back in to sewing, so I figured I'd get a couple of yards of a few cotton fabrics I liked and make skirts. Unfortunately I forgot to look for a pattern before buying the fabric. I haven't tried this yet, but it looks simple enough and the skirt you demonstrated looks really cute, so hopefully it'll work out for me!!

You can do wide stich on top and pull the gatherings when sewing the elastic, or you can hem it with enough space for less wide elastic to go through by putting a clothes pin on the elastic to pull through.

I was wondering about something and would appreciate help from anyone on here!: I want to make a skirt with this type of waistband, but I want it to be long, chiffon with lining, and be double split in the front which means i need a panel to go from back to sides and one for the front and I don't know how to measure or how to attach it and I can't find any videos except for stretch knit. Good job in keeping the selvage, it meant not having to serge that seam! Cut end tabs of zipper then glide over lighter flame or cut w/hot scissor blades or hot iron - all 3 will bond/seal the fabric ends to prevent raveling as well as lessen bulk by eliminating them in having to tack down onto the garment ...
