A lovely finish for your skirt - like your elastic band method! I assume this is only applicable to stretch fabrics as removing any extra fabric at the waist on a woven would be next to impossible to get on or off - haha. Thank you for such an informative video - you even took the time to explain how to start and finish with your serger! Will be looking for more of your videos as even though I've been sewing a long time, there is a wealth of experience out there and love learning tips and techniques from others. Thank you very much

You can still use this technique on your sewing machine. Use a zig-zag stitch or multi-step zigzag stitch. This stitch sews 3 small stitches each time it goes left to right and right to left.

@@ElsabeHurn Interesting how you do not stretch the elastic as you are attaching it. Another knit skirt designer makes a point of that. So sorry if you mentioned but how do you determine the length of the elastic? Waist minus 2 inches? Or metric equivalent?

For the finish do you sew around the band to secure the elastic or just at the darts and side seams?

I understand how to work out the size of the dart, but how far away from the side seam should they be? My pattern doesn't have any darts.

Thank you for the tutorial! The major problem with this kind of waistband is elastic always flips out, even though it has been stitched down at sides. Does anyone know how to stop these kind of waistband from rolling?

You notice she stitched the elastic down at the darts in the dart “seam” or the ditch. Also, you may be pulling the elastic too much and when it tries to recover it is pulling your fabric up.

I always put the elastic around my waist to measure. I don’t measure my pattern. I will shorten the elastic a little bit and again feel on my body what it feels like. Because I leave darts in for shaping the elastic does not need to be stretched so much when sewing in.

Because of my body shape I prefer my garments in woven fabric to have darts and a zip. With wovens you need more circumference on the waist to be able to pull the garment over your hips, so I find that a casing for the elastic looks neater.

Wonderful tutorial, thank you. I always have trouble with my elastic. How do I know the length of elastic that I must use? The shorts for my husband is always pukkering(?) too much. Thanks in advance

Hi Nicolene, when working with a woven you need enough fabric to go over the hips. If you have a lot of extra ease in the waist(more fabric) and the elastic is a lot smaller than the fabric it can cause puckering. I usually wrap the fabric around my waist and then pull it in slightly to make it more snug. It is usually2.5cm - 5cm I take of, depending on the recovery of the elastic. I don't use calculations as it never works for me.
