Full step by step tutorial to knit these easy cozy slippers. Here's the full pattern to knit child's, ladies or men's size slippers. I have used the ladies size for the video.
My apologies for the spelling error in this video. Spell check changed my Purl to Pearl. For beginner knitters it is spelled Purl.

-scissors to cut yarn
-ruler or measuring tape
-darning or tapestry needle with large eye
4.5mm US 7 knitting needles

Cast on 27 (29-35) sts
Row 1: K9 (9-11), P1, K7 (9-11) P1 ,K9 (9-11)
Row 2: K all sts.
Repeat these 2 rows for 5 (6-8) ins., [12.7(15.24 -20.32)cm] or 2 (2.5 -2.5)ins. [5.08(6.35-6.35)cm] less than desired finished length.
TOE: Start knitting on the right side where you see the knitted ridges
ROW 1: P1, *K1,P1; Repeat from * to end
ROW 2: K1, *P1,K1; Repeat from * to end
Repeat these 2 rows of ribbing for 1.5 (2-2) ins., [3.81(5.08-5.08)cm]
DECREASE:
Start on the right side where you see the knitted ridges
FIRST DECREASE ROW: Work ribbing for 7 (7-9) sts, *slip1, K1 and psso, K1, K2 together. *, work 3 (5-7) sts ribbing, repeat between *'s once. Finish row in ribbing. You should have 23 (25-31) sts.
NEXT ROW: Work 7 (7-9) sts ribbing, P3, work 3 (5-7) sts ribbing, P3, and finish row in ribbing.
LAST DECREASE ROW:

Measure out about 18" (45.72cm) and cut wool.
FINISHING:
Thread yarn on darning needle and pass this thread through all stitches on the needle and remove off needle as you go. Pull the stitches together. Pass the needle through the first stitch again and now pull tightly so there is no hole showing. Thread through remaining stitches again and secure wool end. Thread through a few stitches and cut yarn.
Turn inside out and use a blanket stitch to sew up toe. Sew about 1" (2.54cm) past the ribbing of the toe and into the slipper part. Secure wool and cut.
Now sew up the heel with a whip stitch and secure wool end.
Make another slipper the same size.
Yeah! All done.

Thank you SO much for this tutorial! My aunt made these for absolutely everybody and our annual Christmas gift of these slippers was always looked forward to. Unfortunately, she passed away far too young (47) and she took the instructions with her to the grave. That was 20 years ago and, in recognition of her passing, I have been looking on-line for these specific slippers so I can now carry on the tradition. You have fulfilled this dream and I thank you for that. Aunt Verna's legend will carry on.

I learned to knit at a nearly free class when I was 20. Life gave me the skill to only do a couple sleepers and a booties for my coming baby. I dropped the hobby not being able to afford the wool and eventually began crochet which required less concentration on my part. This thanksgiving my grandson suffered cardiac arrest that was Covid related. On Christmas Eve, I picked up yarn and knitting needles and started your slippers I had done in the late 60s. It took more concentration and I did a few rows at a time to fill my sadness and to concentrate on other than our loss. Thank you for your no side effects medicine. May you have a blessed New Year.

I am somewhat advanced beginner in knitting as I picked up the craft to honour my late grandmother who was famed for her beautiful knits in her town. When I opened this video today, tears flooded my eyes. I remembered the red slippers she made for me, the stash of slippers in her hall for all visitors... Memories came flooding in and I raided my stash, found lovely wool and decided to knit these and call them granny's slippers. Thank you very much for the tutorial but also for bringing granny back for a moment ❤️

Thank you so much for this video. My grandmother made these for us all for years and even tried to teach me to knit when I was 9, but at that time I had places to go and people to annoy and didn't learn. I must have learn enough, though, because when I was an adult and wanted to learn - I learned from a book. I had to search around for a pattern and always came close but not close enough for me to continue making her slippers for the family, so I made it up and eventually figured it out. I always had trouble with the toe so thank you for that missing part of my pattern. The thing that made Grandma's slippers so, so special was that she added an extra outer sole that could be removed and replaced when it got a hole in it. Our job was to return the slippers to Grandma before there was a hole on the inside sole and she would replace the outside sole to make them good as new. I have continued that with my family. When new they were very slippery and I remember getting a running start towards the hallway and then skidding the length of the hallway. It became a Christmas morning tradition and competition to see who could slide the furthest down the hallway. Also as my mother has gotten older her slippers are too slick for her to safely use, so I have added strips of hot glue to the bottom so her feet won't slide out from under her. I also have sized down the pattern for baby booties that uses my leftover yarn stash and I add jingle bells for baby's amusement. Grandma passed away 40 years ago, but I still have a pair of these slippers that she made for me. I do not wear them on a regular basis as they are too precious to me. I keep them on a special shelf along side some other things she made and some very special crocheted thing made by my other grandmother. I grew up very lucky have one grandmother who knitted and one who crocheted. They also both sewed. My great-grandmother and my mother were and are quilters, so I had a well rounded upbringing. I am in the process of teaching my daughter-in-law to knit (I had 2 sons.) I taught both my boys to at least sew enough to repair their own clothes and taught the younger to knit and crochet a little. The older boy is handicapped and does not have enough control over his fine motor skills, but he tried.

Our family called these Nana slippers because we always got them for Christmas presents from ...yep... Nana. I started knitting about 25 years after Nana passed (for therapy as an ex-smoker) and had to guess how to make them from an old photo. I have been making them for years but they never seemed "quite right". After watching this video I am so excited!! I am going to start a new pair tonight with your instructions and I know they will be PERFECT!! YAY!!!

When I was very young I asked a friends mother to teach me how to knit. She knew I was a leftie and said sorry but I will only teach you how to knit right handed. So from then I have always knit right handed. So funny that you noticed that. I have heard that a lot of viewers turn off the sound on videos and just watch for sub titles. Everyone likes something different so it’s hard to please the masses. So I change it up here and there. Crazy huh how the tried and true patterns just hang in there. I’ve made so many slippers as gifts. Love them! Thanks for your support!

I’ve made one slipper so far for myself, but I found the toe box area too tight for me. The length is good but I’m wondering if I don’t do the decrease stitches, would this result in a more square / larger toe box? That way my toes don’t feel too tight? Going to try again and I’ll undo the first slipper and use the yarn for my toddler’s pair of slippers :) I bought two huge balls of yarn to make matching slippers for the family. I also got some puffy Fabric paint as I’ve heard it’s good to provide some grip on the bottom (and the pattern I draw on can help us differentiate whose slippers are whose). I’ll do Pom poms too :)

A couple ideas. Make the length of the slipper longer or try using the mens sizing for the next one which will give you a wider slipper.

It was so fun to see someone knitting these! The slipper pattern is the very first item I learned to knit at age four by constantly sitting next to my mother as she was ALWAYS knitting! People did not believe that a four year old could knit but I was always on display knitting.....while waiting in the high school office - for my high school student babysitter to get out of her last class of the day. Students would give me candy if I would show them I could knit!!! This was a very popular pattern in the 50s!

Thanks for the tutorial. My mom who passed away 6 years ago, used to do a lot of knitting and crochet and she knitted the same pattern bed shoes for me which are a bit worn out now! Only difference was that she made them with single yarn instead of doubling it. They were softer and more snug to wear at night. Also easier to knit I guess! I love changing the yarn up to different fibers also, try some of the fuzzy yarns etc, so incredibly soft. Just a tip for maybe some beg, but you can use small round stitch markers instead of having to count over each time also. Happy knitting 😊

The graphic way you present this is such an invitation to get started. I have tried to comprehend this type of simple pattern from reading it, and for some reason was sure it would turn out dorky because of the simplicity. But wow you really brought it to life for someone like me who needs to see things to grasp the progress of how it is structured. I have so many stash yarns that I can turn into lovely gifts. I am thinking of so many pretty combos as I have some art yarns, sequin yarns and things I have hand dyed where I want to feature the yarn, not the pattern. I am a lifetime knitter but sometimes just get stuck in the pattern words and not realize its actually this simple!

@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts actually I only use natural fibers ... I read a book by Brian Clemente Director of Hippocrates Healing Center in West Palm Beach Fl and he said that acrylic and nylon and polyamide etc offgas the same as mercury does in our teeth and we cannot wash it out or get rid of the subtle fumes ... very interesting, being a health nut ... anyway I am careful washing many slippers I have made of wool, some of them I deliberately felted to fit better ...
