For all that ETH deserves harsh criticism, that first goal is not ETH's fault at all. Rashford with the heavy touch could have challenged for the ball and slowed the counter down, and accepted the likely booking. Three red jerseys floundered around and were beaten by the Spurs CB. Dalot jogged casually back towards goal and released the goal scorer to run unmarked to the far post. That is FIVE outfield players who underperformed what I would expect from any 17 year old academy player. The issue ETH should answer for is that it could easily have been 0-3 even before Bruno was sent off. There were so many exciting chances for the Spurs the highlights reel showed most of them only once without replay, and then quickly moved on to the next great Spurs play.

The problem with this side is that they do NOT hit rock bottom, they hover over the edge of darkness. They beat Villa at Mould Trafford last season after a big comeback. They scraped by Coventry. What we've discovered is sometimes managers can be elevated by the players they have rather than the opposite - which is what you want. Everyone points to ETH at Ajax and how he beat Real Madrid in Madrid with that side, reached a semi and just lost to Tottenham. BUT, no one considers that perhaps he just had an outstanding group of young players that made him look better than he actually is. Now we know.
