This is a clip of the Craig Ferguson show on 10-27-09. They had a power failure while he was talking with Alicia Silverstone, so they went to commercial. The power came back on, they came out of commercial, he interviewed Salman Rushdie, they went to commercial, and the power failed again. After the commercial, he used a flashlight to light himself! I guess the control room and cameras are on battery backup.

The Supreme Court of the United States stated that it "is the use of some elements of a prior author's composition to create a new one that, at least in part, comments on that author's works". The reason he is never mentioned as on of the all time late night greats is simply this. He was in a league of his own! So much deeper, funnier, and infinitely more creative than ANY OF THEM. He was about entertainment pure and simple. No script, no politics, just comedy and humanity. Plus the best interviewer of celebs ever. A complete genius.

So many other late night shows are all about the polish, the veneer. And Craig doesn't give a shit about that. He's genuine. "We don't do this live. It's prerecorded." "The network execs are hassling me." "That joke really fell flat." "I'm making my guest uncomfortable." These are all things you'll see Craig deal with over the course of the show. And that kind of naked, honest sincerity (on top of the fact that he's actually, legitimately funny) make him the best late night host around.

The first time I saw a late night show (Letterman) I was a kid and the audience laughed at some benign thing he did while he stood around with his hands in his pockets looking smug and I was thinking "who the hell finds this entertaining?" This vid reminded me of that because we come back from the outro graphic to him in a dark room and everyone's like "oh no way, the lights are off!?!? Haha! What's gonna happen next?!??", and while I'm sure Craig is enjoying it I think this was his whole issue with the format in the first place: it's so uptight on its format that people laugh at the smallest deviation or when they're meant to, that somehow one guy in front of a camera pretending to be half a news anchor is entertainment. Of course, he ends up being entertaining by leaving that behind but it is a lot of nonsense. The interviews are what get me, but the whole first 20min of the show is a bunch of nothing. Entertaining nothing, like chatting about the day with a friend. But the whole prestige about it is ludicrous.

All equipment cameras/computers used during the taping of a TV show has to have some kind of backup power supply that will automaticly quick in in the case of a power failure and can keep running for about 1 hour (If Battery power).

the first models or concepts for flashlights did not last as long as they do now. So, back then, when a flashlight was turned on it only lasted for a very limited amount of time. Thus the term "Flash" light was appropriate at the time. Technology has improved so much that the name doesn't correlate with the device.

The lights didn't actually come on for the Salman Rushdie interview. If the lights actually had returned, he would've finished Alicia Silverstone's bit first. They don't film the sequences in order. The Salman Rushdie interview had been taped before; this "closer" was filmed right after the lights went off with Alicia SIlverstone (probably right before they had to evacuate the audience). That's why the audience laughs at the beginning when he says "luckily the power came on for the Salman Rushdie interview but it's gone off again" while rolling his eyes - it's a sort of wink to camera about how the shows are actually produced. Interviews in particular tend to be taped out of order because the celebrities might only be available at a specific time. They may not even be filmed on the same day. Sequences are often filmed several days in advance (something Craig jokes about often) - as long as Craig is wearing roughly the same color suit and tie, the viewer won't know the difference (incidentally, this is why talk show hosts tend to wear fairly standard outfits without accessories). This is also why Craig sometimes had the "What *will* we learn on the show tonight, Craig" sequence at the beginning of shows - the cold opens are often filmed well after the other bits, so they've already filmed the interviews and whatever (There's a great cold open where Craig comes out and apologizes in advance for a tasteless joke he's going to make later on).
@lininho
@lininho 14 жыл бұрын
@0tyham your video description is wrong. As you can see and tell from Craig's look, the Salman Rushdie Interview was pre-recorded. So the power only went out once, not twice.. (they showed the other interview in between)

Most studio cameras also have a battery backup. Not so much to cover instances like this but to cover minor power fluctuations which might cause the camera to reset.

Actually n0tyham, I think the Salman Rushdie interview was prerecorded from a couple of weeks ago when Mr. Rushdie also did the "Party At Elton John's House" skit. With as much trouble Craig has with the power and lights in that studio he should do a show with just candlelight. He would be able to pull it off.
