Incredible! Had the privilege of seeing Craig Finn open for Heartless Bastards last week and he told the story that lead him to write this song. Pretty powerful stuff.

The bruising beat shoves along, reminiscent of the great Lou Reed NYC songs.

I heard this song for the first time this afternoon on the local college radio station. The song caught my ear and I had to hear it again. Kind of a ramped up James McMurtry. I like it. Having lost my buddy on 9/11 I am no truther but after reading the lyrics twice I am not quite positive Finn is either. Could be though...McMurtry writes a lot of lyrics I don't agree with, as does the Boss, but a good song is a good song.

Finn's not a truther. Doubting Thomas isn't someone we're supposed to agree with, necessarily, he's just like an embodiment of American cynicism, or something. He's the one who says "it sure looks like an inside job," but later in the song the narrator hits him with the "Tom, there must be something you believe."

@@TheCB94 So doesn't that just mean he believes it's an inside job? It seems like Doubting Thomas has beliefs, the Narrator just isn't able to accept them or even consider their validity.

Why would losing someone in 9/11 preclude you from being a 'truther' ? When did the pursuit of the whole truth become so disdained by people - besides, what's more delusional: constantly seeking the truth, or accepting that the Government has already provided you with it?

that is a really good song. Looking forward to the album.

I notice a lot of people in the comments who are too afraid a guy might believe something that they don't to enjoy a good song. When you realize that's a problem of your own ego, rather than a problem with the other person's thinking; you'll mature.

My take on the end of it is that (after having named the character talking about the "inside job" aspect Doubting Thomas) he's sort of calling the character out on the disillusionment. Whether it's supposed to be another person, or a conversation with his own doubts and confusion about the realities. I could be way off, as I just finally looked him up after having heard him on a P.O.S. track years ago, and this is the first song of his I've heard, so I have no bead on what this dude's style/substance is like. I dig it, though (musically, at least). If it is some conspiracy bullshit, that would totally taint my view and anything else of his I hear, though.

Not that you asked for some random guy's opinion. Feel free to ignore my take on it, haha.

@@RVJornales "If it is some conspiracy bullshit, that would totally taint my view and anything else of his I hear, though." You'd stop liking all of this man's music if he believed something you didn't? You don't deserve his music in the first place.
