5 minutes of real gem right here worth of studying. Barnett showing off some amazing things you don't really see at your regular grappling gym everyday (disclaimer: in the West). 0:00 Standing Leg entanglement 0:02 Toehold with hands 0:16 Attacking for Kneebar while your back is being taken (to avoid backtake) 0:27 Attacking for Doublewrist Lock while your is being taken (to escape backtake) 1:13 Changing angles to counter Elbow Crunch sweep 1:18 Shin Lock step-up 1:34 Using footwork / angles to counter a sweep 1:38 Using footwork / angles to counter a sweep again 1:48 Jaw Lock attempt (to force opponent Pin himself) 2:18 Sweep from Gator-roll / Over The Top from bottom Front Headlock 2:22 Grovit attempt (Neck Lock) 2:30 Funk Roll (Pass underneath the legs) 2:35 Doublewrist Lock to escape backtake (and end up on top) 3:05 Using footwork / angles to counter a sweep again 3:33 Rolling Toehold to counter seated armdrag (Note: Most likely a sub here; Barnett just being good sport by not cranking it) 4:00 Heel Hook attempt (using his own butt as lever) 4:25 Shin Lock to escape backmount 5:37 Can Opener to open the guard / keep guard open That's just a little breakdown after one viewing session. I'm sure I missed a lot.

The guy is from catch wrestling, where cross faces, knee and elbow rides, and elbow strikes are common. It's a bit like putting a boxer and a Muay Thai fighter against each other; the boxer may well land a bomb; but if the muay thai fighter cannot use kicks, knees, elbows, takedowns, etc., it is clear that the boxer will inevitably have an advantage.

So beautiful to watch! They were never trying to overcome the other just with pressure or explosive moves, just with technique. JB always looks gassed out but he is relentless untill the end, always aware of every detail and with clear plans in his mind, not taking advantage of his weight. Craig Jones has a clear cardio/speed advantage, but focuses instead on technical sparring. It would take hours to examine all the small details, wow!

Barnett used a Shin lock to escape Craig's back attack. Not Toehold. Also, Barnett could've finished the Toehold by cranking it, but was holding it steady to allow Craig to tap (which never happened). He was just being a good sport. Then he showed Craig how to tap, but casually tapping on the Heel Hook, even though it wasn't very secured yet.

Some people have flexible ankles/feet. I would have tapped to Josh's toe hold fairly quickly. When I get a toe hold (or other submissions) and my training partner refuses to tap, I just let go and keep going.

@@storm5276 What do you think American, or Danaherian, jiu jitsu is, if not a modality that borrowed the foot and leg locks from catch wrestling? Remember: Root bjj did not have leg locks. Furthermore, as it is the karate of our time, jiu jitsu has a bazillion practitioners for every catch athlete. Ultimately, the ADCC rules are exclusively geared towards favoring American sport jiu jitsu. It's more or less like having a boxer and a Muay Thai fighter face each other, but the latter won't be able to use elbows, knees, takedowns, etc., etc. Obviously the boxer will get the knockout. The moment the wrestler performed a knee ride on his opponent's face, the ADCC would collapse in tears of protest. But always remember the scourge that Billy Robinson's pupil, Sakuraba, imposed on the Gracie family (including a broken arm), Conan Silveira, Carlos Newton, etc., all black belts.

Looking at Barnett, it's funny to see how wrestlers never sweep you, but they somehow always end up on top nevertheless. 🤷‍♂

Sequence at 3:30 Craig definitely should've tapped to that toe hold. Josh had that locked in, but knew it's just a roll and didn't want to snap Craig's ankle. I love Craig, but he definitely should've been cool and tapped to that toe hold. I made this point in a response below, but Josh seemed more concerned for Craig's upcoming ADCC run than Craig himself. Josh was nice not to snap Craig's ankle and Craig shouldn't let his ego get in the way during rolling. If it wasn't for Josh's restraint, Craig's ankle would've snapped and Craig would have no one to blame but himself.

Not at all, locking a toe hold grip while your partners sole is facing the floor is NOT ideal to finish in a competitive setting
@reedjohnson8501
@reedjohnson8501 2 жыл бұрын
Defending the toe hold you either hide your sole to the mat or spin with the crank to pull out your leg..josh is a G but craig is well aware of if he's in serious danger from a toe hold(which finish at an abysmal rate at the highest level of competition, especially no gi)
@Aaron-bd9sj
@Aaron-bd9sj 2 жыл бұрын
@@reedjohnson8501 yes they finish at an "abysmal" rate largely because guys are willing to take pops and damage if it means they can keep rolling. I guess for me, this hits differently because a guy at my gym was rolling with another guy open mat and in a very similar fashion, didn't tap to the toe hold and took damage and kept rolling. No one got the "tap" in the 5 min roll, but that guy was definitely damaged and had lasting damage for months to come. It's not hard to pop peoples' ankles with toe holds. Josh had a pretty good grip and wasn't just going all out on that ankle.

@@Aaron-bd9sj gotcha, but you're FAR less likely to eat a pop on an inverted inside heel hook, especially considering that it's destroying your ankle/knee with far more leverage

@Aaron-bd9sj 2 жыл бұрын
@@reedjohnson8501 Oh I totally agree. I'd much rather take an ankle pop than my MCL blowing out lol. But my point is that it makes sense to just tap to toe holds in a roll setting to avoid the potential long term damage. Craig has ADCC coming up. I'd much rather gym tap to a toe hold than pop my ankle and damage my tendons and ligaments. Guys are willing to 'eat' a toe hold in tournaments because yes, it's not the most devastating injury than can happen in the moment. But this is just a gym roll. Tap early, tap often is good advice when it comes to gym rolls.
