This video summarizes Day 5 of my 10 day solo bicycle trip along the shores of Lake Simcoe and Lake Huron in Southern Ontario, Canada. All of the clips in the video were filmed on Tuesday July 24, 2018.
In this video I mentioned my 2014 bike tour of the Bruce Peninsula. Unfortunately I don't have videos from that trip, however I have a photo album on my website which describes it in pretty good detail: cjhoyle.com/bik...
Starting from Craigleith Provincial Park I rode onto Highway 26 briefly but then joined the Georgian Rail Trail via Hidden Lake Rd. This trail follows the route of the former Northern Railway Line and goes past Blue Mountain, Craigleith Ski Club and the Alpine Ski Club. It also goes past Georgian Peaks Ski Club. When I got to the community of Thornbury I left the trail, crossed the Beaver River and rode on Arthur St and Bruce St to the Thornbury Bakery Cafe for breakfast. Afterwards I rejoined the trail which terminates in the Town of Meaford where I crossed the Big Head River. After exploring around Meaford briefly I headed west along Nelson St W and then took Gardiner St to join County Rd 12. This took me to Oxmead where I continued west on Side Rd 16. I turned south at the 11th Line and then continued West from Elmheldge on County Road 10 aka Gerald Shortt Pkwy. It started raining here but the rain stayed pretty light and didn't last for long. After Concession Rd 1 the name of the road changes to Grey County Rd 18. I rode through Rockford and then turned and headed North when I got to Inglis Falls Rd. I rode into Owen Sound along 2nd Ave SE and E following beside the Sydenham River. In Owen Sound I explored the harbour and then stopped for lunch at Sabitri's Global Cuisine which is across from the Owen Sound Artists' Co-Op. After lunch I stopped at the Metro grocery store and then headed out of Owen Sound along 2nd Ave W, 14th St W, 13th St W and Grey County Rd 17B aka Derby Keppel townline into Georgian Bluffs. I rode about 5km NW along Highway 6, which really isn't suitable for biking on. When I got to Ledgerock Rd I headed south and joined Concession 3 heading west. I then headed north along Side road 5 which eventually curves west and becomes Concession Rd 5. After crossing County Road 10 the name changes to Park Head Rd and I was now in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula which is part of Bruce County. I turned north when I got to Allenford Rd and then took Silver Lake Rd heading west. I rode north along Bruce County Road 14 which becomes Side Rd 15 after crossing Bruce County Rd 8. I then followed Rankin Bridge Road which took me right to Sauble Falls.
Strava for Day 5: / strava
The bike I used for this trip is a New York made Linear Recumbent Bike which I believe is from around 2004. I carried my gear in 2 Giant Waterproof Panniers, and mounted my tent and sleeping pad on the top of the rack.

That's so cool that you biked through Thornbury and Meaford! I was born in Meaford, you biked by the hospital when you biked along Nelson Street. My Aunt and Uncle's apartment is in the building directly across the road from the hospital. I lived in Meaford for a few years, moved to another small community near Thornbury called Clarksburg, and then moved to Thornbury. After a few years in Thornbury my family moved again to another area. My grandparents used to own an apple orchard that was located north of Highway 26 near the military training facility. My dad used to work for the Grey County Roads department and helped to maintain the roads year round. It was really nice to watch this video and see all of these places and roads I've been to before! It's been a couple years since I was last down in that area because I was not able to go visit there since the pandemic started.

Wow, very cool! I love hearing about all those local connections. I enjoyed riding through that area. The small towns were pretty and the roads to the west of Meaford were scenic and quiet for biking on.

@@cjhoyle When I lived in that area I was just a young kid, so my family stuck mostly to riding in town, some short sections of quiet country roads near where relatives lived, or along sections of the Georgian Trail. I'd love to bring my bike down sometime when I visit that area and ride some of the trails and roads that I never got to year ago!

Thanks for another enjoyable and informative video, particularly as I have never visited this part of Ontario. Thanks to your video, the Sauble Falls and may be the Inglis falls will be added to my next visit of Canada. Keep up the good work and I will look forward to your next video.

Really enjoying your videos man! You've re-inspired me to get out and explore more of Southern Ontario. Keep on sharing them! If you're willing to share, what's your usual daily average cost on trips like these? Looks like you usually hit a restaurant once or twice a day, and stay at pay-for-use camp grounds which, from my experience, are still pretty expensive.

Thanks, I'm glad that I've inspired you. At the end of video #9 of my May bike trip I included a breakdown of the costs. The final installment of this series will include something similar. I'm certain there are ways of traveling more inexpensively than what I do, but at the end of the day these are my vacations and I want to enjoy myself.
