I sat down with Steve Judd of Australian progressive titans KARNIVOOL to talk drums, how he has his eggs, passing off live mistakes as simply 'Jazz', pizza...and diabetes (unrelated).

Random fact about Steve Judd: his wallet is approximately 4 inches thick! Not that it’s loaded with cash per se, but like he probably has 15 cards that expired ages ago and never got around to tossing them when the new ones came in, and every receipt he’s ever gotten. Quick slightly embarrassing story. I went to see Karnivool in around 2009 and they played at a Chicago suburb. I was at the bar before the show and noticed the guy next to me had his wallet on the bar with his back turned to it. I stepped around more in front of him and said “hey, I’m sorry to bother you, but is that your wallet? I’m afraid someone’s going to walk off with it.” To which he said “oh, yeah thanks” with an Aussie accent. I didn’t realize until he went on stage that I had just talked to my all-time favorite drummer. I would have told him he’s awesome. Instead just I said hey dumbass, don’t leave your wallet on the bar, idiot.

The part about Steve not taking lessons, and Craig calling it out, was extremely illuminating. I feel like the reason all these amazing prog drummers came from a background of no lessons is because lessons establish rules and place you in a box of right and wrong. If you are never told that there are rules to how you express yourself, then you are free to express yourself how you want to, unencumbered. You make your own tools to solve problems as you go, without resorting to the established grab bag of the traditional approach, behind the roped off safe and approved techniques. Brilliant!

I've always loved Steve's drumming and so this is really great to hear him speak and get some insight into things. I don't think he's really done any interviews? Just wish there was more high quality footage of him doing his thing or doing some playthroughs. I also get the sense from this interview with Steve and probably from the rest of the band from Karnivool that they're not particularly outwardly self-promoting.

Really appreciate this. Steve is so underrated and it's so hard to find stuff about him online. I believe this podcast revealed more information about him as s player and a person than the last 15 years of tiny bits of publications about him. Also I think you can count the amount of times he's spoken in front of a camera on one hand.

I hate sweets & most fruit, so I do savory porridge/oatmeal. I mix my poached eggs into my porridge 😅 add coarse ground pepper, Nu Salt, sriracha, & sometimes cheese (muenster or American are the best for this). I have Crohn's disease so I have to generally stay away from most food that isn't basically cooked to mush. Porridge is like 50% of my diet :(

Gotta say, re: swapping his ride... guitar players are blown away that a drummer cares about the sound of their instrument... "I thought you just wanted to something to hit!" We play proggy music and the guitarist is over the top on tweaking his sound. 🤯

Apparently they don’t all live in Perth anymore, so it’s a mission to all get together. It’s still weird though, there’s footage of them playing all it takes in 2016. Probably another 4 or 5 songs they’ve played live since then. It seems like they’re just overthinking it at this point.

To avoid being duped in the market, my buddy, you need a professional broker on the crypto market and financial advisor. They rank among the top of the best because they give people individualized advise based on their risk tolerance. While some have a terrible reputation, others with a strong track record can be quite good
