This scam is very slick, and it takes a ballsy conman to pull it off. The would be buyer is shown a car that does not belong to him. The actual owner believes he letting an appraiser look over the car - after he goes into the garage. So in the end the buyer hands over the cash to the scammer and the owner is unaware of what has happened between the two. The only red flag here is a low, low price on the vehicle.

Always ask for pink slip. Show proof before you hand over the cash. You have to admit he is a good scammer. Robbed the victim without violence or gun.

I don’t hand over cash until I get the title in hand, verify the VIN against the title, get the sellers ID and take immediate possession of the car.. why would you do anything else?

The timing had to be perfect. The Russian guy had to ask the owner if he would sell it, and the owner had to agree. Then the owner would show the Russian the car just as the target arrived. Then the target gives the Russian the cash, goes up to the car and the owner pops the hood for him, starts it up and all. The the Target asks for the keys and the owner is like "Wha???? Weren't you here to appraise the car?"

It sounds like the cop at 2:13 was stating things incorrectly. He said there were 2 suspects. It seems there was only one suspect and 1 victim. The victim paid $14000 to the suspect for a car the suspect didn't own. The other assumed victim the cop talked about is Howard, he owned the car, but he didn't sell the car so he was not a victim of theft, but just a lie.

How are so many people confused in the comments? The scammer acted like he wanted to buy the car from the real owner. Told the owner that the other guy was an appraiser, when in reality the "appraiser" was the one being scammed of his hard earned cash by the scammer. The guy that got scammed is waiting with the actual owner like an idiot after handing over $14,000 and not getting the pink slip or talking to the actual owner. 😢
