I found a free Sony KV-27FS120 WEGA Trinitron television on Craigslist. The TV is a bit of a beast at just under 100lbs (45kg) but with the help of a friend I got it home.
I picked this unit up for retro-gaming using my original Nintendo Entertainment System. (NES) Since this unit is entirely analog, there is no display lag and it handles the native 240p resolution of the Nintendo perfectly.
The TV itself was in fantastic shape. The picture is bright and sharp. Cosmetically the TV just needed a little cleaning. I turned it up in the service mode and it provides a great picture. The only issue is some mis-converged corners but I am unable to fix those without some "permalloy assemblies" the service manual mentions which you need to install around the neck.
I was able to find the owner's manual and factory service manual for this TV online.
Some stats on it:

Got this same model today on FB Marketplace for free with the original stand and remote. The only caveat was that I had to carry it down two flights of stairs (15-20 steps per flight) in order to take it and then up again 15 stairs into my home. Well worth it though!

Quick note: that TV displays up to 480i, but when it is connected to an older console, say an NES, it is displaying in 240p. The p stands for progressive. All older cartridge-based consoles output images at 240p. It wasn't until CD and DVD consoles that 480i was widely used. The i simply stands for interlaced, which means that the image is still displaying only 240 lines at a time, it's just alternating them to create an image that totals at 480 lines. There is effectively no latency displaying either on a standard definition CRT.

Haha, people are modding them for SCART input with RGB. But there are also RGB scart to component adapters out there. But we did get screwed, especially when it comes to Gamecube.
@VeeDede
@VeeDede 5 жыл бұрын
Why would we need SCART? We have component which is the same thing as RGB SCART and before that we had S-VIDEO which was quite close to component. Btw not all CRT TV SCART ports have RGB capability. Before the mid 90s, consumer CRT TV SCART ports only had composite input...
@VeeDede
@VeeDede 5 жыл бұрын
@@FireMrshlBill They are modding TVs for devices that dont have component output like the SNES. But it's quite ridiculous to mod a TV for RGB SCART when you can use S-VIDEO instead. It seems that a lot of people that are obsessed with RGB SCART haven't used S-VIDEO.
@FireMrshlBill
@FireMrshlBill 5 жыл бұрын
S-video is definitely a step over composite, but I'd take RGB over it any day. At this point, just get HDretrovision cables to use with stuff like a RGB modded NES, SNES, RGB modded N64, Genesis and PS1, and connect via component. Thats what I do and am a happy camper. I had a PVM for a bit but sold it because it was only 14" and didnt fit my set up well and am just as happy with my 27" Trinitron (the model of this video) using those RGB->component cables. However, that requires spending money on the mods and the cables, so I get that not every one wants to pay for those, so S-video is a good alternative and is good enough for many/most people who just want to game. However, there is a clear difference going from s-video cables to RGB->component cables that makes it worth it to me. However, I get some people only have composite or composite/s-video CRTs and may want to mod them for RGB since they can't go the component route.

FYI A softmodded Wii will output pixel perfect emulation of NES, SNES, TG16, Master System, Genesis, etc at 240p. It really is the best bang for buck device for playing tons of 8 and 16bit games on a CRT. Plus, Wii has composite, S-video and component output so you can get an image that's better than original hardware.

Nice. I recently got a similar model, the 27FV17 - super happy I found it, I'd been wanting to get a CRT for gaming again, and I really think the TV I found is everything I could have hoped for. Great for games but I've also been enjoying using it for streaming video with an old Roku box. I'll have to double-check that I've turned off Velocity Modulation - I didn't know what it was, and when I see options like that I usually turn them off - but it definitely sounds like something I'd want turned off. :)

I picked up a Sony KD-36FS170 before discovering your channel and yes, it's definitely over 200lbs... Need to find a kit and figure out how to get into service mode to tune it! I don't have a ton of retro games on hand yet but I recently got CRT Emudriver working with a $10 gpu, DVI to VGA cable and a $30 Chinese VGA to Component converter. I also managed to source a couple old stock Pelican component and composite input switches!

I found the same model at a garage sale in my area a couple months ago, for 20 bucks, with remote and manual. Unfortunately didn't come with a stand, and I'm still trying to figure out where to put my consoles! At least it's a perfect fit on my old work desk, possibly the sturdiest desk I have, although the legs are c-shaped so I set the TV near the back of the table just to be safe. The same geometry issue is present in the bottom half of the screen, but it's not a big deal when playing anything. Still kind of annoying when small text lines and certain text boxes go right over it. The speakers are quite nice. Louder than the ones in LED TVs, at least. Component input allows me to play Gamecube games on the Wii (just bought the Wii recently; previously had one but given it away after replacing it with the Wii U, then I bought a Gamecube but realized the component cable for it cost a kidney). I also started using my family's VCR again after almost a decade of sitting in the storage. Update: Sadly I don't know any solutions to use the component option for my PC. HDMI to component converter is a horrible solution because the converter always interprets everything as 16:9 aspect ratio and then attempt to squeeze it into 4:3. And if my PC is set to 4:3, then it will be interpreted by the converter as 16:9 and squeeze it into 4:3 along with pillarboxing due to being interpreted as 16:9 signal.... I'm clearly not an expert so any advices is much appreciated. Update 2: First time firing up 240p games on it. It looks fantastic, much better than I had originally expected it to look. Originally got this TV only for my PS2 and Gamecube, which of course works great with this TV. Definitely an upgrade from LED TVs.

I have the same model tv, but was worried about dismantling the back in order to clean the inside of the tv. I have been told that since crt tvs generate high voltage that I could potentially electrocute myself. I don't desire to fiddle with the internal components with metal tools or wipe them clean with water. Rather, I want to clean the inside in the same manner as you. Therefore, is it really all that dangerous, and can you give me any advice as to clean it properly and safely? Thanks for the video and any help you provide.

Or 2012 ish yeah whatever black plastic Philips brand VCR/DVD combo unit its a cheapie but as well as the other one they both have lasted never had heads cleaned etc nor does the black one even have its remote soo...its got me pissed to say the least about it but I like the gray/grey Emerson VCR better cuz it's both not got any worn out remotes but its also got if correct then the original remote it came with new

TV's like this have a high voltage section, and a low voltage section, I'd check what kind of voltages you're looking at, either way, a good amount of respect for the Flyback Transformer, and the rubber cup that mounts to the top of the tube is in order. There are videos of how to discharge a TV, a lot of them have discharge resistors, but I would not gamble with my life that it has or doesn't have one. Also the dust is just dust, and doesn't affect performance of the TV, unless you plan on showing off the internals, I'd leave it alone.

I just played a few minutes of FF7 on mine and I didn't notice jittery text. Then again, they use more blocky text boxes and bold text. Maybe try messing with the PS1 settings on the PS2. I had mine on standard texture mapping and disc speed, but try turning it to smooth texture? I usually just play my PS1 games on an actual PSone over S-video to keep the wear and tear off of my PS2 (that I have a hard drive connected to and play games off of). I start with all the settings at the 50% mark and adjust from there, I left the sharpness at 50% but may try turning it down. I did bump the picture setting up a few notches as that seemed to brighten the picture without making the actual output brighter. It really depends on each individual TV, I did do some adjustments in the service menu but only slight changes based on the disc I burned offline to use. I really should get a good disc to use like in the video. I also leave the VM off. What audio setting do people use? I have the SMS on. With where it is in relation to my couch, the audio gets pretty spacial. However, the wall to the left of the TV is slightly closer in the setup so it sounds a bit louder on that side, so I should mess with the balance menu option. But for treble I keep it at the 1/2 way mark and for bass I bump it up to about 2/3 the way up.

That's normal if you're playing ps1 games, on a ps2 console via component cables. For better picture quality on a CRT T.V, use s-video cables when playing ps1 games on a ps2 console.

If you wouldn't mind I need some measurements for it that I am sure are not online. You see I have a nook in my gameroom that I want to put a crt into. Now these sets are generally the best consumer sets for retro gaming and of course I only want the best in my gameroom but the problem is the nook is only 25 inches wide and I know the front of the tv is much wider. I don't mind if the front casing sticks out a bit (what I mean is the casing around the glass) but I also know they taper in the back and was wondering what the dimensions were just behind the glass casing. If it is less than 25 inches I am golden if not I may have to settle for an inferior tv.

Picked one up at Goodwill a couple years back on one of their 50% off days. Great TV. Some geometry issues that is only noticeable with some banners and text boxes towards the bottom center of the screen. But I don't mind and it isn't noticeable most of the time with normal game play. Some of the RGB mods people are doing with Trinitrons is interesting, but I think I would just get a SCART to component adapter instead of the risk of shocking myself.

HD Retrovision makes component video cables for the Super NES and Sega Genesis that look much better than a SCART-to-component adapter. However, they are only occasionally available from their website, and buying these cables off eBay can cost upwards of $100. Still, they are well worth their price (and the wait for the next batch to become available).

There is geometry issue present on his TV if you look closely (the NES games makes it much easier to spot, as opposed to the 3D games from gamecube and ps2 which is what I play on my TV). Just the bottom half of the screen is slightly bowed upwards. Nothing major. And I don't think I've ever seen any serious issues on a flat screen, anyways. I got one from my aunt garage.. turns out its still on and give great pics and signal reception, though there's something seems to be wrong with the software and the buttons... planning to use it as a pc crt monitor (will be use from like 3-5 feet distance), but I still dont know if it will work with the VGA to RCA adapter that I have anyone had the experience??

Love the vid. I just picked up one of these the other day actually. I do have a question regarding the AXIS setting in the service menu. The setting appears to have a wide range (around 0-65) but I only notice any color change with values 31 and 32. With 32 it is with the reds a touch overblown.. going any higher doesn't make them more overblown, it just stays the same. If I go with a setting of 31 then all the red is sucked out and I'm left with a greenish picture..going any lower doesn't enhance this.. it just stays as a greenish picture.. almost like it's on/off but taking out way more red then it should be. Did you experience this as well? Is there something I'm missing with the AXIS setting? Appreciate your time!

@@untested3344 Hello! No I, never did.. I basically just accepted the colors as they were... though it never quite felt like the model I had as a kid. Could be the one I picked up for free 5 years ago was just failing and thus had some issues with the picture. Overall I'm still happy with it though and still have it in my basement!

@@yawnny9098 from what I’ve seen it’s just how the tv is? I don’t think it’s because the tvs failing I’ve seen other people having this same issue.

@@untested3344 Oh intriguing! This thread honestly has me wanting to fire it up again this weekend. It's just been sitting there not used for years (but still hooked up). I mainly retro game (240P mainly, but some Xbox/Cube era as well and prior) on my PVM20L2MD now, but there's still a certain nostalgia to the way the 27FS120 looks. Almost a different type of phosphor glow.

@@yawnny9098Hey after a bit the axis ended up working out of nowhere? I’m not sure why but it worked and it removed the red push from the yellows and browns when I set it to zero. Maybe it has to do with something I changed in the service menu or maybe it worked all along? I was trying for the past 12 days to find a way to fix the red push too. The only thing I did differently was that I was on the s-video input while in the service menu. Also setting matrix to 0 helped lower the red push. I was about to get rid of the tv too lol.

These tvs would have beem perfect if it wasnt for the thin black line at the top and one at the bottom of the screens. Drives me mental. Read it was something about some wiring for the grill to be held in place and itd completely normal. Regardless this drives me nuts and i dont knoe etf they were thinking when designing these tvs, i have three of these units and they all suffer from the same thin black lines at the top and bottom of screen.

Maybe your TV's RCA audio passthrough output is broken? The previous owner yanked the VCR's cable, maybe? Ideally you should use an A/V receiver, a stereo system, or an A/V switcher that you can hook up via a 3.5mm headphone jack to as a headphones output, and hook up all your consoles to the back inputs so that you no longer need to get the sound pass through the TV's output.
@realamericannegro977

I use the headphones on this too and it does the one sided sound thing. You have to switch the sound effects mode in the sound menu to surround sound or stimulate. Stimulate is probably stereo.

Your TV supports Progressive. Your Comment about progressive being bullshit for oldschool games makes no sense. Interlaced 240i is inferior compared to RGB 240p

Huh? Many games were made with interlacing in mind. Back when most people had CRT TVs and the best connector most people had was composite. Dithering using those composite limitations in mind.

I have this exact same 27" model. It has been stored for 5 years in a cool, dry place. I just tried to turn it on with a digital converter box and I get nothing. The tube magnetized and I hear stuff turn on inside, but nothing but black screen, not even onscreen channel or menu prompts. The red "sleep" light is flashing 4 times. The buttons under the front lid do nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

Great work, very educational. I have a smaller version of this. Where did you get the dvd to calibrate the colors? I need to try that. I sometimes turn pro mode off and switch to vivid as I feel some games need to be bright, stuff like Neo Geo and CPS2 stuff. Do you feel that way about pro mode even though you calibrated it?
