I love the color combination. goes with the blue carpet great. I was restoring a 14 ft Starcraft one time and asked an old timer that rebuilt boats and asked him about primer. He said he had never used it, that he only applies apple cider vinegar and let it set for a while and rinse. The acid in the vinegar etched the aluminum so the paint would adhere. That was 25 years ago and the paint is still holding good. You should not have any problems since you used the wire brush to remove the paint and that was probably enough. Great looking boat!

Most newer pontoon boats have plastic spacers to lift the side rails allowing for easier drainage so the carpet stays dryer. Might be worth adding

Good call on all your paint decisions. I was a little worried about the stripper interacting with the aluminum. But worked out OK. I painted an aluminum center console on a work boat I had with flat grey Krylon primer (planed to paint color later, never did, I liked the grey look) That thin coat of Krylon primer lasted 20 years.

I added nylon washers under the fence to keep the fence up off the carpet so the carpet could dry and water would not stand in the corner if the boat got rained on when not covered. I found my boat would hold a considerable amount of water in the corner if left with the bow lower than the back deck on uneven ground after replacing the carpet.

The only value it has Is as long as he used marina board for the decking and not pressure treated. Plus you use a glue on decking before placing the carpet protection deck even longer.

I liked your reasoning for not treating the underside of the plywood, but I think I would have treated the bolt holes for the transom. It's an area that gets wet very easily, and drys slowly inside of the holes. Fortunately, that piece is easy to replace, if it rots out. Anyhow, good video! Cheers!

To clean your hardware...if it is stainless (if not stainless...toss it and get stainless) get a gallon of muratic acid...the stuff they put in swimming pools pour some in a bucket (take caution of the fumes) and toss in the hardware. Leave it in there for about 30 minutes then get the water hose and fill up the bucket with water to delute the acid. When the bucket fills up, dump it all out, but not near your grass or plants. Your hardware will look like it is chromed.

Soda blast the pontoons. Quick and well worth the money.
@johnramirez59965 жыл бұрын
You can soda blast. But even at factory when having scratched a tube. We used sandpaper and rubbing compound or like sos pad. Certain pad will remove build up with completely scratching tubes and make them shinny again along with compound. No different than polishing rims or restoring aluminum rims on vehicle.

If it wasn't stupidly expensive and custom, I'd say install on that deck's real estate in the front mid a marine grade recliner or two that has enough room to swivel. So what if it destroys the available open space at the front? Mom and dad need recliners on that body hauler barge. The kids and other relatives can fit on the other seats like in compact cars, tight and cramped. I guess the next best cheapest thing is design the layout so you can put outdoor patio recliner with padding on the deck and fabricate fasteners to bolt and unbolt it down.

Hey Brandon … big fan!! I decided to strip(airplane stripper) and sand down the lower end of outboard to the bare aluminum. Now I’m at a crossroads of what to do. I’ve read about self etching primers. First wipe down with acetone or 50/50 white vinegar/water … then apply the self etching primary, than another base primer followed by a final coat (Alkyd Enamel?). I’ve also read about using the following procedure: Alumiprep, Alodine, Zinc Chromate, than primer then final coat (don’t like these toxic chemicals). I don’t have any spray eqpt. Any help would be very appreciated!! Bill
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Cleaning with acetone is good practice, but cleaning it with water will suffice. Sand/scuff it up a little ,cleaning with acetone, primer it, and paint. Don't need to clear, as it'll wear off the lower in 2 uses anyway. I've used Rustoleum Automotive primer on an bare outboard before, with no issues 4 years later. If you want to get fancy, get the Zinc Phosphate Primer, otherwise you don't need to over think it.

I just want to say you're doing a great job I just purchased a 1991 Sun Tracker Bass Buggy 16Ft pontoon boat out of Lewisville Texas and I got her at a great deal and the reason I bought this pontoon boat is to restore it the flooring has never been changed it was parked under a tree and moss was growing on top of the carpet for years. She came with a trolling motor and a 50 horsepower Force. I'm hoping that its not going to be a problem because the rating shows that the engine should be a 40 horsepower only so again hopefully that won't be a problem here in the state of Texas. My question is did you use the same Transom or did you have to have that replaced if so what type of wood did you use and where did you buy it? Second question is are you going to use the original wire harness or going to have to replace it? Any how you doing a great job keep it up I'm glad you made these videos this is really helping me out I'm doing all this on my own with no help so getting some great pointers is really appreciate it thank you.
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Here, nobody will ever look at the HP rating, if the plate is still on it. Mine is rated for 115hp, I could slap a 200hp on it, and would cause no legal, registration, or insurance issues. I compare it to putting a larger engine in a smaller vehicle. Many do it very often. But your state, comfort, and safety may vary. Transom is 3 layers of 12mm Baltic Birch, and a thin layer of wooden shipping material that came with it. Glued together using a standard waterproof wood glue (Titebond) then coated in Red-Guard, only because there was some left over. Painting it would have worked; but so would just leaving it, as very few pontoon boats have any type of protection on the wooden transom. Baltic Birch plywood only comes in metric thicknesses. The most common sizes are 6mm, 12mm, & 18mm. However the transom needed to be the standard 1.5" thick (38.1 mm) The 3 layers are 36mm thick, the thin sheet made up for the needed 2.1mm. Why Baltic Birch? Its a very strong hard wood. The closes thing to a marine plywood but at a 1/5th of the cost. Now, if you have the budget, I would just buy a sheet of marine ply. Same goes for the decking. However, I think its a wast of money as exterior grade will work perfectly fine. You'll only get 10-20 years out of it instead of 15-25 like you would with marine grade. As far as the harness goes, there are 2 harnesses in the boat. One for the outboard, one for the boats lighting, horn, radio, etc. The engine doesn't care or need the boats wiring to function. Outboards are completely independent (unlike an inboard) For my engine harness, I'm using the one I made in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKaYko2llqiEp9E For the boats harness, I'll have to make one. Due to the cost of the electrical tools, and the complexity of a DIY fuse box, I may or may not do a video on the construction of this.
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Also, this was purchased through a specialty dealer that is local (ish) to the area. You can get Baltic Birch, and marine grade plywood at Home Depot (via special order) if you don't have a speciality lumber store local to you. Cost increase is minimal. FYI- Baltic Birch will probably run $25-50 a sheet. Marine, last time I ordered it was $150+ for a 1/2" sheet. If you buy marine, just get a 3/4" and glue two together.

I'll send you an email of photos and possible video of the start and finish on my pontoon for the flooring my first thing I'm going to do is clean the tunes before placing the flooring and resetting the wire harness that was originally on the pontoon and then adding a wire harness for the lighting and courtesy lights. Higher later, I have a 90 that just needs a few important/costly things. It'll probably be a while. but the 40 is a good running low hour motor, and should it die, I have 2 spares too. Having usually only smaller boats, the 40's were perfect, so I kept a few.
