Hey Craig! Question: (Thank you so much! I find your reviews information and enjoy your energy in them!) I'm thinking of converting my home to HomeKit, but learned that I would have to completely buy a new house thermostat. Do you know if there is a HomeKit house thermostat that 1- WON'T auto-lower when I leave, and 2- that I can still control while NOT on my wifi? I change my thermostat from my phone right now before I get home if I'm gone for more hours than expected, or for more extreme weather than expected while I'm traveling. Your expertise may save me HOURS of research!!! Hope you can help! Thank you in advance.

it’s specific to the homepod, all my minis do this, they’re on super fast 5ghz wifi, but they’re still pretty stuttery :(

I like what Apple is doing here. I just feel that they aren’t pouring as much recourses in as they are on their other things like iPhones, iPad, etc. Also, I feel that the person they picked for director of Apple Home is not doing his job compared to those for other Apple products, and it shows through. They have so so so so so much potential. The hardware is there, the software is there but needs to be overhauled.

Don’t you have to have the specific and limited smart devices that apple HomeKit lists? I’m confused about this. I’m using google home right now with all sorts of generic smart bulbs and a thermostat and smart plugs and whatnot. None of those devices are on the like 20 item list of things I can use with apple home kit. They all connect to google. Will getting a mini change this? And/or can I connect it through google home?

My iPhone only tells me "Just a sec" when I have a painfully slow data connection while out and about. While on wifi, I never have this issue. Could it be that he doesn't have a fast wifi connection? Or is the homepod mini just that slow?

@CraigsTechTalk3 жыл бұрын
Hello John and Armando, this has been happening more since the latest update. Internet is very strong. I have seen a few others say that have seen more of it. But like you said, I have heard the “one sec” and the scene has already run. I don’t edit feature demo speed so the good and bad shows. With some of these you get the slow ones. One thing I do wonder is if any of it has to do with not using a feature regularly. With the combination of voice match and personal request, does it add anything to a lesser used features. Thanks for watching.
@jua72653 жыл бұрын
I use HomePod and Siri very regularly all throughout the day/night and rarely have anything but instant replys. Alexa has also become fairly stable too. What I have experienced is if a specific Siri module is unavailable , such as timers, there will be the ‘just a sec’ response (while other requests are immediate) but Siri speed has certainly been increasing since Apple localized the service rather than entirely based on server-side services.

I have 2 original large Homepods in stereo which I love and they have gotten better with each upgrade--I use timers, use REminders and add to lists, call or message, music of course. I never touch the HOmepods. I wanted one in the BR to listen to radio :(CNN and MSNBC) or music (may tell Homepods to play everywhere) when I'm in there or near--so bought a Mini awhile ago. I had an Echo Dot in there--really disliked it--so the Mini was just right. Have considered adding another that will be more of a floater (I have done that with the BR--moved to LR and onto covered porch). Oh, do use Mini for music until sleeping also--tell it to set a sleep timer. I rarely ask them to answer questions--find I get better info from using Ipad or Mac. or phone.

Most reviewers miss a key aspect of the mini. First and foremost it is a music speaker- an excellent one. It is not how loud it is- but the quality of the sound. This is a byproduct of excellent design and advanced technology. It can function as very good TV speaker when used as a stereo pair. But beyond this, as part of the Apple ecosystem, it helps make music more accessible. As for its home automation capabilities- these are fine. But its musicality is what makes it a superb choice .

All the scenes and automations I write are within the home app. Under automations you can use sensors, voice, time and a couple of other options to trigger an automation. Those automations in the home app give you control over your different devices. If automations can’t cover it, shortcuts may cover it. But most of my stuff is done in automations.

My current iPhone that's with me just about 100% of the time can do 95% of everything (HomeKit, Siri, reminders, making calls, playing music, etc) mentioned. I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of this speaker besides the actual speaker part. I'm not trying to be a smart ass just the fact that it seems very redundant to have 2 devices that pretty much do the same thing. Also Siri voice won't work with other streaming music subscriptions on the HomePod but will on the iPhone. I believe that's a deal breaker to only support Apple Music when it can be done on the iPhone.

Can someone that don’t have access to my phone ask questions from home pod mini to get information

I've found that handoff doesn't work for everything. For example, I can't hand of Audible audio books to my Homepods.

I was ready to start investigating Siri to augment (and maybe replace eventually Alexa) until I saw this video. That delay is something Alexa doesn't suffer from right now and Siri would be a step backward. Apple needs to work on this if it wants to be taken seriously as the home automation goto controller.

Alexa has so much more to offer. I used to be a solid Google Assistant user, then I got an iphone and started using Siri. With enough aggravation I tried Alexa and found continued improvements that I believe she will out perform Google. Try the car feature in the Alexa app. Outstanding.

Interesting, I’m getting ready to replace my echo devices with HomePods because Alexa is so awful at properly responding. We have to repeat ourselves 2-3 times to get her to do anything while the HomePods I have been testing at home and my office are much more responsive. I’ve never experienced the delays shown in this video.
@Tailsnpaws3 жыл бұрын
@@travisdlucas I have. Repeatedly…to the point of aggravation. As far as the Alexa devices, make sure you have the latest update installed. This device is fast becoming the best one of the bunch. More personalized responses that are better than the Google Assistant. We made her the default Assistant on our iPhone.

There must be some Wi-Fi weirdness or something else afoot in the background that was hampering the performance of the HomePod Mini’s in this video because I have NEVER had this type of delay with my HomePod Mini’s in the few months that I’ve had them. Like Travis Lucas below, my house was getting annoyed by the crummy performance with our Alexa-compatible devices. We have various Echos, Sonos, and Yamaha smart speakers with Alexa built-in and all were just missing commands or saying that the devices couldn’t communicate with the smart lights and such. It was a waste. Now, I’ve switched over to a couple HomePod Mini’s and an Apple TV 4K and I can ABSOLUTELY say that it always gets things turned right on and right off within seconds and they probably haven’t had any connection issues since I’ve bought it. I’ve been shocked by the results but hey… everyone’s mileage may vary.

@@travisdlucas for me google sucked completely. I never dared to ask google to change a song while on Android Auto because it would almost certainly fail. Siri just seems to know whatever I'm telling her.

Is there any way to get Siri to ignore all voices except my own. Hate it when friends start speaking to her to change my music when they visit.
@CraigsTechTalk Жыл бұрын
No there is no way. You can temporarily mute Siri by asking Siri to stop listening. Then long press the top and tell Siri to start listening.

I got a HomePod for a Xmas present. The sound quality is terrible - too much base and I’m buggered if I can find an equaliser function to fix the audio output.

Might have been an editing mistake on my end. I might have accidentally mixed them. If I make a mistake I start a demo over. It’s usually an all or nothing execution. Or it might have messed up. Thanks for watching.
