@@CraigsTechTalk Correction - technically still have a Show 5, as my daughter uses it in her dorm room at college. Tried talking her into changing it, but she doesn't want to. Beyond that, they're all gone.

@@CraigsTechTalk tbh, that's why we bought the 5's originally (just an alarm clock) - and you have to spend so much time reversing shit to make it like that. But then you know that. Half the time I'm walking by going "Ziggy go home" (as I changed those to be Ziggy vs alexa). I have changed the home ones I have to spots - I like the way those look - just the time and an icon for current weather conditions.

I reached my breaking point a couple weeks ago and unplugged every single Echo in my home and replaced them with HomePods. I’ve had Echo devices since they had a waitlist for the first one. I wish Amazon had gone in a different direction with these products.

Thanks Craig, great tip! The continual "suggestions" displayed on my Show were really annoying to the point I will never buy another Show. I used your suggestion to set Night Mode to 12:00am - 11:59 pm and it shows the black screen. Excellent! Then I tried, while now on Night Mode, saying "Alexa, show ABC photos" where "ABC" is a folder of photos in Amazon Photos. So far my Show is continually showing this folder of photos and never stopping to give their annoying "suggestions" nor ads nor any other distractions. This is what I've always wanted, it is what I expected when I bought the Show. Only disadvantage, no big deal, it doesn't show the time, date, nor temperature. Thanks again for this great tip!

After a bit over an hour of showing my Amzn photos, with no ads nor suggestions, the slideshow has stopped and the Show is showing the black Night Mode screen. Disappointed.

Something else that you can do is to tell the device to “turn off your screen“. I do this every night when I am going to sleep. You can also easily do this by creating a routine based on time and day. Great video, Craig! This is an especially useful given what Amazon continues to do to try to get more money out of us…

I had already traded in one Echo Show 5 for an Echo Spot, but Amazon didn't want the other (might have been a refurb, I don't remember), so that one is now in the kitchen. The all day trick works! I was worried the display would go dark, but it still adjusts brightness based on the ambient lighting, so it's perfect. Thanks!

Yes, I was expecting it to be darker than it is. For me, it’s still the brightest light in the room. I bought it to be my alarm clock, but even at its most dim, it’s way too bright. I tried the “ turn off your screen too” but it doesn’t really turn off, just dims it. It really is a shame how bad this product became when it had such promise.

Upon someone else’s suggestion, I changed my language to English (Canada) and that seems to hide the suggested ads from the screen. However, when I asked it what the groundhog saw this morning, it told me what it saw in Canada 😂

That is funny. It looks like English (Canada) is a loophole. Maybe they treat it like a Canadian device, but it's outside of Canada so no Canadian ads. Thanks for sharing.

It’s still so weird how every Echo has a different color for its Night Mode. The Echo Show 8 is white, the Echo Show 5 is red, and my Echo Spot is orange. Another one of the same features that’s different across each of the Echos for some reason. I’ll never understand why Amazon chose to design them this way, much less not allow customizing of them.

I changed my echo show 15 language to English - Canada and that stopped all the ads. This was needed into addition turning off all options on home screen. I used my echo show as photo frame which runs non-stop

I like my Echo Spot as a bedside alarm clock. It is my only screened Echo device and has no ads (so far). All my other Echos have no screens--all I'm interested in is the audio functionality. Like someone else mentioned, I'm using Home Assistant primarily so the Alexa integration still supplies a good value to me, but I don't need anything with a screen for that. If I want a screen I'd still rather use an Android tablet device (with no ads.)

I agree that the Spot is a good option if you’re just looking for a clock with a small screen. That is the only echo with a screen that I would recommend. Alexa still has value on the audio side. Thanks for watching.

@@CraigsTechTalk My Spot replaced a Google Assistant Lenovo clock. They both do pretty much the same thing, but I'm liking the Spot display much better. And the Amazon addon base stand has given me back my phone charging USB port.

Do you think with the upcoming paid Alexa subsciption they will get rid of ads? I've already switched to Google Home and it's been fine. However, I feel Amazon does routines better. If they get rid of ads with the subscription (and if the new Alexa is any good), I might consider switching back to Alexa.

I got rid of them because you can’t flip “sponsored” cards off. Please share what you turned off. If it is under the Home Content, those are not paid ads. Other than the ads and dumb home content screens, I got rid of them because I think the screens are pretty much worthless. Sponsored content skip the scales. Regular echos and clocks are just better for me at this point.

@ I just don’t get anything on my screens except the photos I uploaded myself, and I just had a recent update that I thought might have caused me problems, but no, I still only see the photos with the date and time. My main issue with the Echo in general is Alexa. The AI, if you can call it that is so far behind, it’s only slightly better in some cases than SIRI, and that’s bad. In home content I have everything off except Drop in, sport schedules and scores and finally rotate continuously. That’s it, and it’s fine, I get no other junk on my screens except.

I have comp[letely eliminated all sponsored ads w/o going into night or kids mode. I do have to go into advanced settings in the privacy settings and toggle off 3rd party ads. I also set location to english/Canada. I have had no issues for over a year. I still get my home content but no ads or alexa features requests.I have this for both my Show 5 and show 10.

The only thing I stopped using was Echo Shows. I have been using both echos and HomePods since 2018. I did move all my smart home control to Apple Home about 2 years ago. Echos are used for information, timers and drop in. Thanks for watching.

This woul have been great for me, but my problem was the time staying down pretty much most of the time in the bottom left corner and my bed being to high and blocking seeing the time even with my clock being on a stand on my nightstand

I said that I had packed them up in a closet. Once I learned this tip, I tried it and left it running for a week. I made this video and then put them in the closet. I don’t need them out since I had replaced them all with regular echos.
