Artist Ash Arder gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her exhibition, “Ash Arder: Flesh Tones,” which was on view at Cranbrook Art Museum October 26, 2023 through March 3, 2024.
🚗 “Flesh Tones” explores Arder’s personal family narratives and the lasting impact of the automotive industry. Various objects, textures, and details from the factory’s assembly line accentuate the exhibition, like doors from a 1987 Cadillac Sedan de Ville- her family’s car from childhood- and two UAW jackets. These emphasize the stark contrast between the unyielding forms of machinery and the organic, tactile nature of the human presence.
🔉 Another exhibition aspect is the soundscape, “Amniotic - Week 16,” created in collaboration with Huey Mnemonic. The soundscape is Mnemonics’ imagined reconstruction of Ash’s own in-utero auditory experience at the General Motors assembly plant where her parents worked and brings together sounds of the automotive factory, 1987 pop culture, and the warmth of the womb.
