This is just one of the jobs I perform for a living and what happened here was sad because it was a fixable situation. Thankfully no one got hurt in this one. Hanging pre-stressed concrete wall panels is best done with a lattice-boom crawler crane, not these mobile jobs with outriggers and this is the reason why.
@ToTheTopCrane5 жыл бұрын
I set precast with a 200t mobile hydro. The difference......I make sure my outriggers are on material that is sufficient to carry the load.
@kingjames82835 жыл бұрын
@@ToTheTopCrane - All of our jobsites are soil stabilized before we arrive to ensure it can handle the weight of the trucks which approach 95,000# each and the crane. We use both hydraulic and lattice boom crawler cranes. When setup properly, both crane types are equally capable. Only downside to hydraulic cranes is the excessive time it takes to move crane along as panels are put in place. Therefore my preference for getting a job done fast are the lattice-boom crawlers as they are only assembled at the beginning and disassembled in the end, and are free to move readily in between. Not only that, but they can fit in tight places and function in ways hydraulic cranes cannot such as traveling with load. I'm not afraid of hydraulic cranes as I work with some of the best companies and crews. In twenty-five plus years, we've only lost one brand new zero hour Manitowoc 999 to operator error. That is the most used crawler crane used in my area.
@ToTheTopCrane5 жыл бұрын
@@kingjames8283, I definitely agree on the on site mobility aspect of a crawler. They unequivocally win in that regard. When I set up a hydro for a precast job, I have to maximize the working radius. Which makes for a max pick at each end of the run. But, it's definitely doable. Just takes a little forethought and pre planning. 🙂

Once the ground gave out and the outrigger sank, the superstructure would have no choice but to swing to the left. The counterweight would just follow gravity to the downhill side of the crane and the slew brake isn't strong enough to hold all of that weight back. I agree that he shouldn't have tried to hero his way out of a bad situation, once it stopped moving, just get out and wait for the calvary to show up with the other crane needed to lift the back corner out of the hole.

The ground was soft , and they should of had crane mats, or one inch thick trench plates delivered to place under the rear outriggers. The operator never should have swung the counter weights over the low side. With the boom at that high of an angle , swinging the rig in the direction that he did only made this mishap much worse. If he had swung the rig the other way it would have put all the weight over to the high side, and helped settle it back down. I do have a little bit of experience in the area of crane operating, being a instructor at a heavy equipment training center, and a certified practical examiner.

One thing for sure the operator did not understand the difference between a mast and a gantry it could have worked with a gantry possibly but definitely not with a mast at that angle. All he did was tension up on the load causing the boom to roll through the load line and pull over backwards, typical mistake people who have not run a mast style crane. Boomed up way too tight for that. Should have boomed down before he started tensioning the line Assume he was trying to get the mast off the panel behind him Who knows . I ran a lot of tilt up , it's a cowboy industry I'm sure he was thinking he was doing the right thing to save it, Easy to Monday morning quarterback not so much when you're there.
@MrTysteel5 жыл бұрын
Looks to me that he was rigged up picking the slab and when he started stacking the weight the corner of the concrete slab he's on gave way into the footing, when he took the load off his swing break wouldn't hold the counter weights from swinging into the wall, not enough swing power to push the weights up hill so he tried to rig up to the back of the crane to use the hoist to pull it around but instead it pulled the boom past the point of no return. Should have waited for help!
@torchandregdoc5 жыл бұрын
I think you're close, but I think he's trying to pull the boom down, not trying to pull the super back around, which in theory was the right thing to do. He was trying to boom down but the fleeting shieve was punched against the panel and the mast. He was so close to saving this. However, if he would have gotten back and taken a look, he would have seen that because the rig was already laying back so far, hooking on to the carrier was just going to pull it over backwards. It's a shame he didn't pull off of some thing in the building, ie a forklift zoom boom, or and unstood panel. He just needed a few thousand pounds to get it going. May have needed to chain off the swing as well because as soon as it would pull the mast off the panel, it was always going to keep coming around. It's like standing a rolled over truck on a hillside. They always go to the bottom if you haven't set the brakes. Like everyone says, He should have waited for help. Risk to Reward.

Dang what a shame. That’s bad when the ground blows out. Looks like the left rear went out of sight. Too bad they didn’t have a big track hoe or dozer that could of hooked the the lugs under the front bumper and maybe he could of saved it. But I wasn’t there so I can’t say ether way. He was almost done with that job to it appears maybe three more panels to set.

Took over 60 minutes for the crane to fall over. Where was the safety, supervisors, all riggers at? No one thought about just stopping and looking at what was going on? That could have been prevented I'd say. As soon as the rear cables went slack, it was all over!
