I was one of those inmates on Intermountain Crew 4 fighting that fire and I'm just glad that no one panicked. So yes I do believe that to this day they are training just as they did back in 1987 That video was used for training purposes and I was also a speaker for the the Susanville training center.

Those firefighters survived over an hour with 4-5 burnovers in crude (in todays standards) fire shelters. I hope the training they received is still being taught today!

Good ole daze when our fire runs were 21 days with two days off to drive to the next fire. Good times!

Would it make sense to hide from the fire UNDER the engines?

NO!! Absolutely not! Heres why; Fuel tanks! & the tires will explode and burn putting off deadly toxic fumes! Its one thing to park vehicles in a manner where they block the direct rage of the firestorm yet you should stay well back from ALL vehicles in a entrapment-or-deployment. Theres a difference between being entrapped & a full on deployment. Same with difference between a Safety Zone & a Deployment Area. One should NEVER! need to deploy in a true Safety Zone.
