I was going to say block, but a couple others beat me to it. My boss told me a story about his time in the army. They did a rebuild ( don’t remember what it was), but the engine would only run for a while then start knocking. After the third time through, they found out the counter boars where ground a couple of degrees off. Good luck!

Hey Warren- I used to work on EMD engines and they had a bunch of viscous dampers that had some bad fluid in them that would take a set - the engine was a 20 cylinder and the balance problems would manifest itself in the second main from the opposite end of the engine - course that was about 15 feet from the balancer- it was a royal pain to change one too... you would have two water pumps - two oil pumps - what they called the ice cream box and the governor drive just to get down to the front engine cover off to uncover the balancer... I also found a 16 cylinder white superior on time that would shake some when it got loaded up - it had individual pryometers on each cylinder - one hole was just a little cooler than the rest - so we went in to measure for a bent rod - we were ready for finding a few thousands of an inch indicating a bent rod - now this thing had been shacking a little for years - so when we did our measuring we wound up using a tape measure because there was so much difference between the known good piston and the bad piston but it wasn't from a bent rod - turned out they made that engine model in a natural gas model too - the oil company in Alaska had bought the generator used from a company in Texas and that company had accidentally installed a natural gas piston in the engine... it was a hoot finding the wrong piston in the engine that had been in service for at least 15 years... If those main caps are that hard to get off you might pop them back on without the crank and check them for roundness - the crank might be flipping around in a couple of main bearing bores that are a little to big.. also dont forget about the balance of whatever that engine is running I have seen unbalanced loads tear up prime movers several times. As you know the weakest part in the system will fail and maybe that balancer is it - the problem might not even be anything with the engine... good luck and keep us posted...

Merry Christmas Warren! This may sound a little unbelievable, but you need to check that block to make sure it's not distorted somehow. This is a remanufactured engine with multiple repairs already. When you had problems removing the main caps it reminded me of an engine I was working on back in the 80s when all of the new diesel series engines were coming out, the Detroit Series 60, Cummins 444, and all of that. One of those engines had a casting defect that was causing run-out issues on the drivetrain and I think they had to recast the block or something along those lines. In your case it seems like a possible combination of things because of the list of issues basically from the beginning of this engine's life. The stuck caps made me think that perhaps the casting around the walls and journal landings is somehow not square and true, or one of the journals is not in line. Clearly something is out of alignment. When you showed the crank counterweights those balance holes looked pretty deep for a 6 cylinder inline diesel, especially if it was only on one or two counterweights, that doesn't seem normal to me, those cranks are not typically that far out of balance from the manufacturer. My suspicion is a poorly machined block because of how much trouble you had getting the end plates and caps off, too many things just don't seem to fit together very well. Like you, I want to know what the actual problem is so I can be confident that it is truly fixed when it's done. After all that machine has been through, I would be looking for a different block that the parts actually fit properly. Maybe the robot that cut that block was having a bad day? From the little bit I could see of the wear pattern it almost looked diagonal across the journal. Did the cap have the same wear pattern? That would indicate binding from corner to corner like the line bore was not square to the face of the block making everything at a slight pitch. Doesn't seem possible, but with the piston scuff and all the other things, definitely something to check. A flexing cranck would absolutely destroy the front balancer and timing cover. These diesel engines are under so much load that sometimes we forget just how much movement happens in these hardened metals.

I'm typing this at 5:00 in the morning as I woke up thinking about your job. One of your video titles was "Cause and effect". With that in mind, pressure wash the WHOLE power line of the tractor (Yes, Nasty Job). Take a serious look at where the drive shaft connects to the differential/final drive. Look for broken; worn; missing bolts; bad trunnion beam bushings. Something that would cause large pressure on the crankshaft and pushing around the whole engine. The tractor gets abused in operation to the point of putting pressure on the crankshaft. One of the effects was broken thrust washers. One of the effects is worn motor mounts. You did good finding the crack charge air unit. Now keep looking at the whole tractor. I mean two engines going down. What's the common denominator in the story? Keep taking videos that's good reference material. Your a Very Good Mechanic so keep looking for "The Cause".

May want to have them take the block as well, being it’s a second run engine “remaned” , it obviously had its original failure, now after remanufacture it is continuing to have big issues, could the block require line boring? You would think it would tear up at least one bearing worse then the minor scuff we see? Anyhow going to the extent of installing a balanced rotating assembly, I would want to make sure the block was straight??

Hi Warren, Hope you and yours had a nice Xmas and New Years. One quick check on the crank for cracks is a light tap on each journal with the ball-peen hammer. If it rings and sings, you're usually good, whereas a dull ring or difference in sound between journals can be the sign of a crack. Magnaflux is the ultimate test of course. There's a lot of comments about the cap removal difficulty and people suggesting a line-bore, but if there was any issue with the trueness of the crank or block, you'd see that in the main bearings and they look pretty OK to me. It will be interesting to see what the balancing turns up for sure. Elastomer dampers like these are there purely to tune out crankshaft harmonics caused by firing order and phasing and prevent crankshaft cracking/breakage due to those harmonics. If your balancing doesn't turn up anything, the next thing to consider is that this engine has something causing uneven power pulses that are literally overstressing the damper and tearing out the elastomer. So check everything to do with air delivery to each cylinder, cylinder mechanical compression and delivery/metering of fuel to ensure that each cylinder is working the same. Given how hot the thing got, pay particular attention to the valves, seats and head in general, plus stuff like piston rings (guess you'll replace them all anyway!). Stuff like this is a nightmare for sure, so it will be interesting to see how this all turns out! Cheers, Rob (Farm-boy & 20-year top fuel dragster mechanic and crew-chief/tuner)

We had a gas compressor one time that had a problem with the line bore of the mains. It was causing the crankshaft to deflect enough that it was shaking the whole machine. A small auxiliary pipe kept breaking off on one of the knock out bottles from the vibrations. We tore it down and used a crankshaft deflection dial gauge on it. The one throw on the bad end was deflecting .015 “ over the allowable for a 6 “ bearing. We had to correct it with a line bore in place on the main bearings. The crank was also bent about .008” on that end it was sent out and straightened and reground .010” under.

My experience with balance issues is with large stationary equipment used in Gas compression engines and recip compressors. One time we did a overhaul on a 7042 Waukesha. Its a 7042 Cubic inch displacement engine, V 12, for a size reference it weighs about 22,000 lbs when its fully dressed. Anyway, we had exchanged the crankshaft during the overhaul and in the next few weeks after the overhaul it was constantly breaking things, like snapping the pipes off the engine oil cooler and other mounted equipment. You couldn’t really “feel” the building shaking, but obviously there was a issue, ended up being that the exchange crank was a 1000 rpm crank not a 1200 rpm crank like it was supposed to be. Luckily there wasn’t enough gas onsite anyway to need to run at 1200rpm so we just slowed it to 1000 and all the problems went away.

If that engine was running as hot as it was it wouldn't surprise me if the entire engine block is warped. That would definitely explain why the main caps put up such a fight coming out.
@gwbuilder57793 жыл бұрын
The only thing is, there's not that kind of discoloration in the block or components. Most of the heat was in the cylinder head exhaust side and even the head didn't show excessive damage to indicate heat penetration into the surrounding areas. Even the frame and mounting points would have had to show heat-tranfer, but the crankshaft was normal coloration except one journal, but that doesn't mean something isn't out of alignment. Perhaps when the block is cleaned there might be coloring coming down from the deck surface into the walls and webbing, but the other components suggest not. Either way, the block is definitely suspect.
@JHruby3 жыл бұрын
@@gwbuilder5779 Block casting flaw then? That or bent crank have to be leading suspects at this point.
@gwbuilder57793 жыл бұрын
@@JHruby Casting seems unlikely (if they were done in china using short-cut technology, maybe) because there are batch numbers and if one has a flaw the whole batch of however many thousand would all have the same flaw, but machining inaccuracies are probably more likely. A simple setup error when squaring the block to the milling machine could change every surface in every direction. One thousandths short on one corner of the block to one thousandths long on the corner over a surface that is 3-4 feet long, imagine how many intersecting surfaces would be affected. The center point of the crank journals would not be in the center front to back and most likely side to side or corner to corner. Then the piston bores would be slightly skewed on all those axis, timing gears, chains, and drives would always seem off somehow, bolt holes and components wouldn't seat or line up properly, and so on. Sounds like all the problems this engine has, right. If this block was wrong from the factory and someone tried to correct it and then someone else remanufactured it to correct it and now Warren is trying to figure out what in the world is going on... It's just time to start from scratch and get a unit that is known to be good. I am the worst person when it comes to giving up on a project because I know I can make it right, but I've learned over the years that some things just are not worth it and this one is definitely not worth any more headaches for the owner or Warren.

Just kicking some ideas around: Was this the engine that had a cracked air charge cooler that was overheating so badly that the exhaust manifold cracked? Does the cracked air charge cooler explain the overheated exhaust, or could it be something else? If the crankshaft checks out okay and the rear damper is not at fault, I have to wonder if the injector timing was so far off that it led to excessive exhaust temperatures and rough running. Or was the injector firing order off? Or were some injectors over-fueling leading to rough running? Could that explain rough running and the failures of the front torsional dampers? Or, was the engine running a component that was so far out of balance, or so uneven in drag that it caused the engine to vibrate so badly? (driveline, transmission, hydraulic pump?). Anyhow, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all yours, Warren.
@leebarnes6553 жыл бұрын
They had the cam and crank out of time as a reminder, coupled with the massive air leak under pressure that would have cooled the engine internally had it been there to do that and you wind up with excessive heat. I have nothing on the vibration issue other than the motor mounts being so beat up doesn't help matters at all. It might be the case that the engine needs extra wiggle room and without robust motor mounts it starts eating harmonic balancers. It will be very interesting to hear what the balance guy has to say after he has spun it all up a few times.

Hi warren this mite be off track but I wonder if the cam shaft might be twisted. Was thinking maybe a uneven firing of the cylinders could cause a oscillation through the crank shaft and the dampener is working its butt off trying to smooth it out . But this would not explain the over heating . Had a similar experience with a Mack E6 4 valve engine. It had a strange feal to it under load . The dampener was getting hot more then normal. Long story shourt pull the engine striped it down found crank to be twisted. Thought I found the problem. Rebuilt it with new crank and dampener. Still did the same thing dampener getting hot and strange sounds under load. Boss sead just send it to work . It broke the crank two week later. Any way I stripped it down again. But this time I sent the pump out to be checked. Thats were we found the cause . The cam shaft in the fuel pump was twisted causing a uneven firing of the cylinders ect ect. I’m guessing the crank dampener couldn’t cope with the oscillation . Sorry for the long winded story mate. Hope you guys are doing well over there

That's a long crankshaft to begin with, and judging on how difficult the mains were to pull and the only wear pattern on the one main bearing all the way on the drive end the crank may just be out of balance. Or possibly the rubber membrane in that drive coupler is slightly out of round making the whole rotating assembly wonky. I've seen dual mass flywheels membrane break apart and it is relatively easy to see. I would say it's out on the end with the flywheel, judging by the main bearing wear. A good engine builder will definitely see the issue when all the rotating assembly is in they're jig. Balancing everything together is most definitely the way to go. Hope you and your family have a happy and safe Christmas and new year's!!! 😎👍

Yeah it's funny when stuff is out of balance it can be "in balance" at a lower rpm, but as the rpm increases a "little out" can become a real shaker. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was within tolerance on the Friday it rolled out of the shop, but over time and working with the vibration varying with rpm it became increasingly worse to where it starts eating parts. I will be watching to see what the out come is going to be (maybe we should start a betting pool on what it is)..lol Well I want to take a moment to thank you for helping us get through a rough 2020, if it weren't for you sense of humour and your videos it would have been a bugger of a year. Thank You Sir, Stay Safe and when you can, put your dogs up and relax with family and enjoy a more than well deserved break. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year 2021! Cheers!!

I was doing an overhaul on an N14 once, the crank had warped bad enough that it popped itself up out of the journals once we got the caps off.

Definitely seen that in several engines, I think it was caused by a bad forging process, but if those cranks are improperly stored they will be out of line for sure, even as big as they are.

What was the end play on the crank shaft? Are the main crank caps marked ? Discolord not enough oil getting through the oil passages that feed the crank bearings? Are the main jurnals scored ? Check the oil pick up pump for blockage.
