Crap to Cream MGB floor repair, in the footwell, first time MIG welding, be gentle in the comments.

Carrying out a floor pan repair, cutting a section out and welding a new piece in, time to learn how to MIG weld. Oh, what fun, for me in my eyes for a first attempt at MIG welding, quite happy, obviously as I get more practice, I should get better.
Was going to use flux core wire however working within the confines of a footwell and with all the fumes and possible smoke didn't think it was a good idea so I went with solid wire and argon.

You've inspired me to go to my garage and weld in my floor pan today. It is a partial job like the one you just did, except larger. I have 18 gauge sheet metal I am going to shape and weld in myself. Since it will be covered I'm not too worried about how it will look.

Ok great, I was in the same place, whilst I wanted it as neat as possible for my own personal satisfaction, being under the floor sound proofing and some underbody sealant underneath the vehicle it was a good "practice" area, one thing I know for sure that section of floor will never ever fall off. The metal is so thin, I had to knock the voltage down to around 15V to stand any chance of maintaining a pool to weld on or with. Good luck with your repair.

I have Replaced many a floor pan on MGBs.

Well this one is the first one I’ve done and it was only a relatively small section. I’m sure it gets easier the more you do. Did you fully weld the floor in or did you stitch weld it? Is it a hard job, just out of interest. Thanks for the comment.

Looks goodvto me for your first time welding. The more you do the better your get, not that you want to do more or find more. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Thanks Stu I've been watching some of your videos, you've done quite a bit of welding and you've got your fair share of welding to do, pretty impressive some of the body panels you made just fit. That rear wing certainly looked like a bit of a major job. Do you do the painting or do you get someone else to do that? Cheers Marty

@CrapToCream those rear quarters were a real pain and unexpected but not to much more welding work to do hopefully. I do all the painting myself but I'm by no means a professional at it but can get a fairly decent finish.

Me, I draw the line at painting, I did try but the paint job ruined the effort I put into the mechanical side of things. Not sure if you have come across Steve Wemyss, he has a YT channel The Great MG rebuild, he is next level. Cheers Marty
