Crape Myrtles - Family Plot

Crape myrtles bloom in the heat of summer with large showy blooms. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond talks about the different kinds of crape myrtle along with their common insect pests and disease problems. Crape myrtles can be divided into several categories based on their size. The smallest grow to 8 inches, while the tallest can be over 30 feet tall. Selecting the correct size for your application is critical. Many people choose plants that are too large and then have to severely prune them to keep them under control. Joellen also talks about pests including crape myrtle bark scale and aphids. She also talks about powdery mildew.

I had to cut mine down because when we bought the house, someone had planted them 6 ins away from the foundation. Small house had 3 on one side and 3 on the other side. But, they are so beautifull, but they grew higher than my little 1 story house.

I just moved to Mississippi from Utah where we do not have crape myrtles…the house we bought has several varieties but they had all been chopped/murdered. 🙁. One of them was in glorious bloom last week, but on all the spindly thin new growth caused by the chop….then we had a week solid of heavy rains which have now broken most of the branches since they were all too young to hold all the heavy blooms when soaking wet. Another good reason not to chop!

I have 9 on my property two Tuscarora, two Red Dynamite, a Biloxi, a Catawba, a Natchez, and two Zuni. I clean them of stray suckers, prune branches that are in conflict, neaten branches that are too long and keep them in shape so they are attractive and healthy. Crape murder is against the law in my yard!
