+Zombie Gorilla Thanks a bunch, Zombie Gorilla! I appreciate it! And well, KZbin's a very competitive place with reviewers and content creators a dime a dozen. Many popular channels have already made a name for themselves when it was easier to do, so chances of newcomers getting there now are really damn slim. I just keep persisting and pushing and eventually hope it pays off. If not, well then fuck me. Haha.

I enjoyed this review. Nice work. This game is special to me as it was the 3rd PS1 game I ever owned. And I think it still holds up well 20 years later. Wow that makes me feel old lol. To think I was about 6 when I first played this. While it was quite impressive for a 1996 PS1 game. I do have my gripes which you mentioned in the review. Namely the hassle to save your progress and the jumping feels a bit sluggish. Which let do many deaths by falling down pits. I do prefer the sequels much more but I do like to go back to playing this one occasionally.

This is the third time I watch this video, your channel is so rewatchable, I keep clicking on these, both when I realize and when I don't realize that I've already seen them, the only ones I think I've watched more times than your Crash reviews is probably the X reviews X5 onwards (Especially X6) as I am fascinated by the subtle and not so subtle changes that take place in these set of sequels, you should take a look into the next few Crash games, that is CTR, Bash, Wrath of Cortex, Twinsanity, and Nitro Kart. In general any video by you is good news in my youtube feed.

Honestly, I'm surprised I was the first one to notice how much this game parallels DKC. You'd think all of the similarities would be a no-brainer given how much people like to compare and contrast games nowadays. But I guess people get too wrapped up in the whole "Sonic's ass game" thing when thinking about influences for this game's development. Not that I think ND took inspiration from DKC. I just think it was a strange coincidence. Still need to play this one. I beat the 2nd and 3rd ones years ago, and I've owned this game for a while now, but what little I played of it didn't impress me super much, so it's on a long bucket list of games to play. Nowadays it feels like I can only play a game if I'm going to record it, too. Otherwise, it feels like I'm wasting time or something. I'm sure you know the feeling.
@RetropolisZone8 жыл бұрын
+ExoParadigmGamer Yeah. Perhaps I would've picked up on it had I played more of the Donkey Kong Country games. I'm not very familiar with them. I suppose that's gotta change sometime, but y'know, so many games so little time. Crash 1 is literally a platformer, haha. Like I said, it's all in the timing and precision; there are very few unique gimmicks to speak of. This makes the early levels kinda bare and simplistic, but once the difficulty ramps it becomes pretty fun; in that sense the challenge level seems to be comparable to the DKC games, though DKC has more gimmicks and stuff. And yes, I very much know the feeling. Casual gaming is mostly a thing of the past for me now, but I do like doing this more.
@electricmastro8 жыл бұрын
+ExoParadigmGamer I think SomecallmeJohnny referenced this too. Perhaps the Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin played Donkey Kong Country (I heard they also played video games long before they developed them) and got a good enough amount of inspiration into the game. Both games have steam vents, drop platforms, bouncy pads, heated pipes, enemy characters that would move back and forth, and animal buddies which help you through the level. I also wouldn't be surprised in the case the development team of Jak & Daxter played the Banjo-Kazooie games and got inspiration from them.

Excellent review, Retropolis Zone. I really liked this game as a kid and I still enjoy it to this day. Although 2, 3, and Team Racing are way better. I even recommend the two GBA games. Josh Mancell's soundtrack in Crash 2 is awesome. I bang my head to the heavy metal guitar work for the boulder/bear chase snow levels every time, lol. This was a great first entry, but nothing I would replay every single year personally. It has aged moderately, although that save system and control scheme makes it feel dated somewhat. It's challenging, but maybe too challenging at times.

+The Side Quest Gamer Thanks man. Crash 1 has its flaws and bad design choices, but it's still a very playable, albeit challenging game. It's not a fantastic game, but a good one nonetheless that holds up well enough. :)

Imagine complaining about the missing save-feature in this game, only to find out that New Super Mario Bros has the exact same system ten years later, which was Nintendo's umpteenth platform game. :') But mate, I'm really getting more and more impressed by your reviewing skills! And I was already impressed with the SA1 review, haha. Even though I only played like 2 or 3 levels myself, I feel as if I know all the good and bad things about this game. Time flew by as always while watching your video, and there even were some snippets that I had to rewatch because it made me laugh out loud! I really like that humorous style, completely different from your first couple of reviews. Don't feel bad about your impersonation at 5:28, it's f--ing great! Just don't overuse it, but if you use silly things like that a few times in a 27 minute video (like you did here) it does have a very nice and good effect. I really like how you talk about yourself, and the bits about things like malfunctioning camera angles (or the collision system in this one) are always my favourite! It just shows how nothing is perfect, even Crash Bandicoot (which I know is one of your favourite PS1 games), and when you show things like this when discussing a game series, you really see the improvements that the developers made and I really love that! If you keep working (and improving) like you have for the last year I'm 100% sure that you're gonna hit amazing numbers of views and subscribers sooner or later, and you totally deserve it.

6000 average subs. 6000 average views. Do you have any idea how rare it is for almost 100% of a fanbase to watch every video? You should be very proud of yourself pal, I for one hope to Aku Aku that you make videos like this until you're old and grey lol. I demand to see you review every single game I've ever played....and all the ones I haven't :p If you were to rise in popularity enough to justify starting a Patreon, I would gladly donate some cheese to prop you up to do more of these, and I'm and a firm believer that 99% of current Patreon users don't deserve to ask strangers for cash lol. I always have a special place in my heart for this game for its balls-to-the-wall PURE platforming. Precision, Timing, Commiting to your jumps and needing to be Accurate. 100%-ing this game is a feat you'll never forget, it's so brutal that the satisfaction of getting all those gems is just euphoric. I wouldn't call this the best in the series, but I will say it is an excellent game for hardcore platforming vets to sink their teeth into.
