I'm surprised the comments aren't pouring in knowing this is one of the most beloved PS1 games out there. I personally am in the Crash 2 over 3 camp, but I do like Crash 3 a lot. I could never get the Platinum Relics (then again I didn't even think about using the Super Spin to bypass obstacles). I did use the Bazooka head start trick a lot, though. I got like four Platinums before giving up. I did get all Gold Relics, though (and according to the manual, I REALLY "hauled Bandicoot"). Maybe one of these days, I'll try getting all the Platinums again. Great review.

I will say that while not all the other gameplay styles are perfect I think at least most of them are well done and add something to Warped. And honestly i'm probably in small minority but Warped is my favorite Crash game in the trilogy. While Cortex Strikes Back is a great game also Warped for me was a solid experience mostly from beginning to end. The music in this entry in the trilogy is my favorite too. I especially like the variety in locations for the levels as it takes advantage of the time element very well. And the boss battles are really good even if the final boss battle could of been better. I will say though about it being rushed I could see where you're coming from but most PS1 games from what I know didn't exactly have that long of a development cycle. Usually it was around 9 months at the least and 3 years at the most maybe. But I do feel like even though this technically had the shortest development time it's pretty polished even if some things are a little game breaking. Overall I will say great review. Keep up the great work Retro.:)
@RetropolisZone8 жыл бұрын
Crash 3 is my favorite too, but it does feel a little less focused an experimental than Crash 2. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. The shorter development cycle is impressive to me because of how far they pushed the game. 10.5 months with all these new animations, environments, engines and play styles, good boss fights and the upgrades... and yet the game didn't come out bad or even only decent. I imagine Naughty Dog crunched from beginning to end.

if all the boxes were in the regullar stage, why the hell you would do the death routes/collored gem areas? The game NEEDS to "optional" stuff you need to do in order to get 100%, otherwise it get SUPER BORING really quickly. And again, it's optional, you don't have to do it to get to the end of the game... You just need to do it if you want to be a "hard core player"

I'm guessing you don't think as much of the Elemental Shields in Sonic 3 & Knuckles either since, like the power ups in Crash 3, none of them are strictly required for the level design and are kinda just buffs and small assistance.
@RetropolisZone7 жыл бұрын
I think the Elemental Shields are a bit different since they are just temporary power-ups that you may or may not find along the way. You can't build a level challenge around that like you can with Crash 3's permanent upgrades.

Nice review. This is definitely one of the best PS1 games I have played. I think my one gripe was the underwater stages. Ugh, thank god there were only two of them. Also the Motorbike stages I suppose. The steering was fucking awful and it was just matter of luck being able to win the races. I didn't mind the plane stages. However instead of flying around destroying a certain number of targets they should've been like the Rings of Power level right from the start. I would've found flying through an obstacle course of rings more enjoyable.

great review, but i disagree on the motorcycle stages straying too far from crash gameplay i view them as a twist to the auto running stages, like you only go forward and instead of just getting to the end you race opponents. and like the jet pack in crash 2 once you get used to the controls (which shouldn't take too long) the motercycle is fun to use. other then that i pretty much agree with most of your points, overall i think crash 3 is the best in the series it took the refined formula of crash 2 and perfected it and with a splash of variety.
@RetropolisZone8 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the review! I can definitely see where you're coming from. After all, the Jetski stages also handle differently and have new mechanics to play around with. What bugs me about the Motorcycle stages is that they are races. I think needing to come in first place (three times, as well) with these less than perfect controls requires an unreasonable degree of mastery for something that doesn't have much to do with the base gameplay of Crash Bandicoot. I would have preferred them to be mini games like the dog fights, but we can agree to disagree. Thanks for being respectful about it! We need more of that on KZbin, haha.

Crash 1: 5/10 An ok game, but gets repetitive after a while. Also WAY too difficult to be super enjoyable. Crash 2: 8/10 Great levels, environments, and story. The slide mechanic is a nice touch, though backtracking brings this game down. The secrets were also too secretive to the point where the player had no clue where to find them. Crash 3: 9/10 (My first video game ever, but I’ll try to leave out any bias.) Amazing animations, great level variety, fun bosses, cool power-ups, fun time trials, and FANTASTIC music! It’s no wonder this game’s theme song is the most iconic in the series! Backtracking is no longer an issue besides Future Frenzy, but the secrets are still too hard to find (so much so that I only found out this game had secrets a couple of weeks ago, after playing this game for 15 years.) Also the fact that the N. Sane Trilogy made Coco playable in Crash 1 and 2 AND still made it fit in the Crash canon is awesome! The best game in the series in my opinion.

Ik i'm late but this truly is the best Crash 3 review i've ever seen but i need to adress some stuff: First of all Crash 2 OST makes me cum. There's not a single forgettable piece of music or sound in that game. (Speaking off, that sound when you enter a level oh my god i'm gonna-) In Warped i only liked the prehistoric theme, the death route but egyptian theme and of course the main menu/timetwister theme. Crash 2's OST is way more atmospheric, way more memorable, way more varied and just...you've listened to it, what is there more to say. This is the part where i list my favourites but it's almost the entire OST and they butchered the OSTs in the remakes, only Toxic Waste benefited and only Megamix Mania in Nitro Fueled stuck with me. Second, the ice physics i'm pretty sure are supposed to be like that with the exception of the momentum carrying part so just get used to them and get good. Same can be said for the people that bitch about the bees and backtracking like come the fuck on. Can't you just be patient when running towards the camera? Are you deaf and can't pass the bee part? If you're a newcomer then i understand because you wouldn't know which is the optimal way to go to make collecting everything easier and have less backtracking. Like go left in the level The Pits and kill all the enemies in your way, then go back and just normaly continue to the right like...there's no problem here, literally a one or two time thing. (The example you showed on Night Fight the optimal way is to enter the death route area on the left, get the gem, kill yourself and then continue on the normal path on the right, after you reach the fork, backtrack a little by heading back on the left path where the death area ends, smash the only 2 boxes there that are not far away from the main path and then just continue forward and complete the level. (Sometimes like in Sewer Or Later you don't even have to complete the green gem route, just hope on it, get the gem and then kill yourself to avoid backtracking. But yeah, you need to know about this sort of stuff first which is why i said it's a one or two time thing, for you as a player to get. Also in your Crash 2 review you said there is no hint for that secret green gem pathway in the level Eel Deal. Well, the fact that room exists and is full of nitros is the hint, why would it exist in the first place and why would there be nitros there, guarding what? About the giant polar bear opening the secret pathway in un-bearable...yeah. That 3 bridge boards that don't break thing is pretty hidden and out there tbh, not that big of a hint and noticable...it's still something, unlike Warpeds which we all know that games secrets are an embarrassment. Literally no way of you getting these, only by complete accident or by looking them up) I'm sounding like a nerd having to explain this but this is part of the charm of Crash 2 for me. (Warped makes me fall asleep with its narrow level design and tedious 100% completion, i pretty much never 100% Warped anymore) Having to stay in a level longer in order to complete it, figure out the optimal paths, explore to see if you got everything and maybe find a secret too, it is a struggle the first or second time but that's it. The game is short as it is so it makes sense that all these gems and secrets wouldn't be easy to find and get making for a more satisfying 100% true ending. The camera is the only real issue with all of this, while it works perfectly in literally every other situation...i just thought about deapth perception but the games are fair enough with the shadows and you getting used to the weight of Crash and controling him whenver you want......yeah the camera works great in that 3D or 2D environment, same can be said when chased, but the backtracking can be more fine with a more zoomed out camera. There, fixed. I'd rather backtracking return with a better camera in CB:IAT rather than comepletely removing it. One last thing about Crash 2, there are enemies that encourage you to dig out in levels like Digging Tt and Bee-Having, the hammer weilding Mario looking ones. The don't do a good job...but yeah) Same can be said for when you complete a level but end up missing a lot of boxes meaning this stage should be accessed by a secret in another stage or has a secret in it of itself meaning more challengins platforming for you to complete. Completing the game 100% shouldn't be brain-dead and easy, it is optional after all and you get more sections to playthrough and things to collect in return, plus that makes levels feel connected so what's the issue? You want more shitty vechiles and relics instead? Anyway lol, my thoughts on some of your points aside this was a fantastic review to watch, so insightful but also entertaining. I'm glad you put your biases aside and admited that Crash 2 is the superior one, i mean seriously that games only flaw was the boss fights. Great video dude.
@sebastiankulche4 жыл бұрын
Every thing that you said defending Crash 2 are things that make the game more difficult for the wrong reasons. The secret warp rooms or the backtracking are the most negative points...Plus repetitive levels, easy boss fights, the crash on the original trilogy with less innovation (because the first one is the first one and Warped has all of the new game modes, and Crash 2 is more a refined Crash 1). Yes, i prefer relics and more vehicle levels. If Crash 3 doesnt have that, it would consider a worst Crash 2 because it lacks innovation. Did you think that Crash 3 would recieved a 91 on metacritic if it takes the same steps as Crash 2 with a 80-85 score average from the reviewers with criticisms that would be solved in Crash 3? Every Crash game or even every crash fan game takes Warped steps and not Cortex Strikes Back. The vehicles is only 1/3 of the experience so if you dont like it is not a big deal and even then, the worst vehicle levels controls fine compared to other platformer games that have poor and dated controls.
@DTownNash6 жыл бұрын
It's Aku Aku. TELL ME you didn't just call him Ooogabooga. -_-. & you're outta your mind if you think Crash Bandicoot 2 doesn't have memorable music...
The problem for me isn't really in the individual pieces. There are many great levels here and even some fantastic ones. Sure, a couple of vehicle levels are lame, but I actually think most of them are good and some are even pretty great. I also think a few traditional levels are a bit lame, and the levels take longer to get going, but that's no big deal. My problem comes with the glue holding the game together, so to speak. It's good, but it's a lot spottier than 1 and 2. Firstly, you do need to do more backtracking and the backtracking for gems breaks the pace of the game a lot more. Secondly, the warp room is presented a lot more lamely than 2's, which has these gates themed after the levels, a stronger camera, the gems and crystals fitted into the environment, and felt like it had more progression as you went up the floors to reach the next rooms. Instead here you have these halls, and these random room themes, and so on. This shows that some presentation bits from 2 are lost here. The cutscenes are also lamer than 2's. Now, 2's were also mostly the floating head thing, but they looked way cooler and took place in a space you could walk around. They were a lot smoother and cooler. Thirdly, and most importantly to me- this also ties into presentation- the game seriously lacks thematic progression. 1 and 2 had it in spades, but the level themes are doled out so randomly in 3. Why is it that the first boss is in a Roman coliseum and the second is in the Ice Age, for example? There isn't a satisfying order to the level themes as 1 and 2 had... it added TREMENDOUSLY to their storytelling. And yes, the levels are inconsistent in quality- but, I think it's not such a big deal, it's a bigger deal when it's with the other issues the game has. Warped is definitely the most inconsistent of the three and that stinks. It has some amazing parts and it has the ingredients to make a truly great game, but it just falls short of being truly great. Don't get me wrong, I love this game and it deserves to be a classic, but it's weaker than the sum of its parts. I wish that some of the pieces that held it together were stronger. I'm not really giving proper credit to what it does right here at all, because it does so much right, but I'm too tired to write it out, and I'm not doing a full review here. There are just some of my thoughts. I replayed this game pretty recently and the more it marinates, the more I just feel this way. I think 1 and 2 are better overall packages. And yes, I think 1 is actually a great game, I think it's underrated these days. EDIT: when I say backtracking I mean having to repeat levels because you don't have a colored gem or special exit already, Crash 2 paced the secret exits and colored gems perfectly

I actually enjoyed the flight levels, both as a kid and now... but there is no defending the motor bike levels.

I like the traditional levels, but HATE the vehicle ones. The bazooka should have been the last power up from beating the game I think.

Time Trials differ between the two versions: Several levels have different Relic times between NTSC and PAL (check the level list for more). NTSC times are rounded to the nearest 30th of a second and end in 0, 3 or 6 always. PAL times are rounded to the nearest 25th of a second and thus, the hundredths are always divisible by 4 (except when they end in 2) and are never odd numbers. The Future Frenzy Developer's Time of 1:07:47 is believed to have been done on a Beta (in-development) NTSC version. In the NTSC version, the platinum relics on levels 31 and 32 are automatic, while that’s not the case in PAL. In the NTSC version, you can get 2 Aku Aku masks if you keep dying on a level. In the PAL version, you will never get more than 1, which is how both versions were in Crash 2. Aku Aku's nose has some colour issues in both versions. In NTSC, it's gray in his 1-hit point form. In PAL, that happens in his 2-hit points form. When Crash already has 2 Aku Aku masks, all Aku Crates in underwater levels will turn into normal Crates in PAL. This doesn't happen in NTSC, but it's still impossible to have 3 of them underwater, since breaking a third one does nothing. Some enemies behave differently in the PAL version, and are generally considered harder: The Wizard Lab Assistants have 2 hit points in PAL. When you hit them for the first time, their robes and beard will disappear and they'll stay in their underpants (similar to what happens if you shoot them with the Bazooka in NTSC). The Knight Lab Assistants take less time to swing their sword in PAL, as they only grunt once (as opposed to the two grunts they make in NTSC). The Double Header Lab Assistants swing their clubs faster in PAL. UFO Lab Assistants take a shorter time to charge up their beams. The missile-shooting robots in future levels shoot 4 missiles in PAL, whereas they only shoot 3 in NTSC. When entering a level in NTSC, the same sound as in Crash 2 is heard. In the PAL version, a new sound is used. In NTSC, Crash won't do his dance after defeating Tiny; he will in the PAL version. In NTSC, N. Tropy has a line after being defeated. It's only possible to hear it in the PAL version via a glitch, if you jump all the way back after defeating Tropy and before the Warp Sphere appears. The NTSC version doesn't show the level stats in the secret Warp Room, when Crash is adding a Crystal/Gem/Relic. In NTSC, Ski Crazed (a Coco level) has Crash's icon on the level stats. This was fixed in the PAL version. Fake Crash appears in more levels in the PAL version than he does in the NTSC one. Whereas in NTSC he only appears in Toad Village and Makin' Waves, he also appears in Hog Ride in the PAL version. The option for reversing the vertical aim for the Bazooka was removed from the PAL version. Like in Crash 2, if you lose a life in the main level, the Death Route lifts disappear in the PAL version, even if you had already reached the lift before losing. The lift remains active at all times in the NTSC version if you've already reached it.

THE NAGHTY DOG TRILOGY IS OVERRATED
@bluespark015 жыл бұрын
Then you must think crash bandicoot is overrated because the naughty dog games are the only good ones in the series. Not counting the n sane trilogy or nitro fueled but those are remakes.
