Does "released from inside the cockpit" mean the drums are air-dropped? If so, how does one guarantee that both drums drop as I imagine the asymmetry of one drum not releasing could be diabolical? (Asked in the spirit of check, check, and check again...) PS. nice short lesson, to the point, very watchable.

The idea of "Check, check, check again" is wrong and useless. You can't check things three times because you don't have time. I believe that the correct lessons here are 1) If you interrupt a checklist, things on the checklist can be missed. If you interrupt a checklist, be very careful. What probably happened here was that the pilot was doing a standard preflight and then got distracted by the drums and then returned to the checklist/preflight but at the wrong place! 2) Beware target fixation. This is another way of viewing the same problem. If the drums are there, what have they distracted me from? And, to answer another commenter's question: no, the drums cannot be released in flight because of the asymmetrical load, as you said. They will be released from the cockpit so that the drums can be released with the pilots safely in control of the airplane and the engine running.
