Correction: In 1773, Warren Hastings was appointed as governor general of Fort Williams only and not India. The Governor General of India came into existence after St. Halena Act (1833) and first governor general of India was Lord William Bentinck.

Excellent video! One thing I would like to point out is that Warren Hastings was NOT the first Governor General of India. Instead, he was the first Governor General of Bengal. The first Governor General of India was William Bentinck (Gov. Gen. of Bengal position was converted to Gov. Gen of India via the Charter Act of 1833).

Prior to this date the Brahmins had exclusive impunity from state prosecution regardless of the crime. 6) *1795: For the FIRST TIME* since the decline of the Ashokan empire, Shudras were granted the right to own property. 7) *1804: Female infanticide banned.* 8) *1813: Slavery abolished.* 9) *Also in 1813: Right to education for all granted.* 10) *1817: Punishments according to Varna system made illegal.* Honestly I could go on because there are hundreds more significant benefits that the British Raj gave to India and the world. But you know, *most people are NOT interested is the truth.* The British empire was the best thing that happened, not just to India but the world at large. Despite it's flaws, if one compares the achievements of the British empire in such a short period of its existence while managing the largest empire in history then its nothing short of incredible how much good it accomplished. *Here is SOME MORE little nuggets of TRUTH.* about the good the British empire did in India. A reasonable example would be the difference between the roughly *1000 years of dominance* of the Indian subcontinent by the numerous Muslim empires and dynasties. *(I am a Muslim myself)* which had varying degree's of dominance and influence, with the largest extent of roughly 85% of the subcontinent under the rule of the last Mughal emperor Auranzaib. Most periods the subcontinent was divided between many different, often short lived warring Kingdoms. From the British East India company consolidating its territory to its direct take over by the British Crown in 1858 we have *less than 200 years* in which the British managed a pretty unanimous control over the whole subcontinent while eventually managing the largest empire in history that spanned the globe and which was directly conquered by sailing it's ships through thousands of miles of ocean, and well before the advent of telecommunications, steel and steam powered warships. *much tougher than sending thousands of soldiers from Arabia and Central Asia and making towers of skulls after putting whole cities to the sword* *The legacy of almost a thousand years of Muslim dominance* is mainly in its imperial architecture of grand mausoleums like the Taj Mahal, Badshahi mosque, Qutub Minaret and many other countless mosques, many, if not most were built upon Hindu temples that were often destroyed through horrific massacres described in Muslim sources, a few crude scientific observatories and few roads, the longest if I remember correct is the Grand Trunk road. The best they accomplished was an economical flourishing during a very stable 100 year period of the Mughals. *That's pretty much it for almost a thousand years of Muslim dominance of the Indiansubcontinent* *The British on the other hand dominated the whole of the subcontinent for less than 200 years* while at the same time managing the largest empire in history. *Whithin only 200 years* they managed to build the longest railway system in the world, thousands of miles of roads, modern sanitisation, modern schools, colleges, hospitals, museum's, the destruction of the Thugee class of bandits that were often used by both Muslim and Hindu Kingdoms to terrorise each others lands, the abolishment of slavery and the horrific practice of sati where a wife was burnt alive after the death of the husband and most importantly a united India which would otherwise have been no different from the centuries before the British arrived, a landmass of many warring Hindu and Muslim Kingdoms *which would have become an absolute hell hole* if such a fragmented landmass had entered the modern world with modern weapons and the dynamics of modern world political allegiances, *had the British not united the subcontinent and left with only 2 independent states instead of potentially more than 50.* *clearly they did a piss poor job at dividing and conquering then huh???* And the idea of a separated India between Muslim and Hindus had little to *NO SUPPORT* from the British Raj, if anything the British authorities were struggling to contain it from disintegrating any further into something like it was before the Brits arrived. But I guess modern critics such as yourself and *CHARLATANS like Shashi Kapoor* would have done a far better job at reconciling the countless volatile dynamics that was bubbling beneath the surface and which had plagued the subcontinent for more than a millennia *before the British came along.* In other words it would have been no different, if not in a far worse predicament than Africa. Since the beginning of the 20th century there *is about 5 billion extra human beings on planet Earth* , over 95% of them in Africa,Asia and South America and all as a direct result of the policies, intervention, medical and infrastructure developments, stability during colonisation mainly by the British empire and most recently by the Western world. *of course, like all empires atrocities were committed by the British empire* yet what they have left behind is *considerably better* than what all other empire's have left. Warren Hastings was the first governor general of British India in 1773 or technically we can call him as he had de facto power ! and after that in 1833 the British Parliament passed the Government of India act also know as Charter Act of 1833 which re designated the post of Governor General of India that governor of bengal would be the Governor general of India this is how William Bentick is the First de jury gov general of India ! After the Regulating Act of 1833 , the other two provinces were made subordinate to the GG. In that sense , Warren Hastings was the GG of India. , I suppose. The defacto and dejury concept as mentioned by Nishant Kapoor makes sense.

Correction at 24:29 Warren Hastings was not the governor general of India. He was the governor general of Bengal by Act of 1773. The institution of governal general of India was created much latter in 1833, with lord William Bentinck being the first one.
