As the X is always so small you actually can take it out of the equation at @6:48 where you have to subtract it or add it to the numbers. On the other hand you can't where you are multiplying for obvious reasons. This helps you skip the dreadful aftermath.

Most often, you would really just use the same equation Hank showed in the video (products/reactants = Keq). The final concentration of the products would be determined using some form of analytic technique (spectrophotometry, chromatography, etc.) depending on the reaction. You can then calculate the final concentrations of the reactants. From there, it's just a matter of plugging your concentrations into the equation to calculate Keq.

It may not be more descriptive, but it is more precise. "Power" is a fairly common word with many meanings... In physics, for example, "power" has a technical meaning and it's nice not to need to say something like "the power of the power" when you mean "the exponent of the power."

According to what I learned. Sometimes, you can simplify the algebra. For example, you try to find x and you have to information K=1.3*10^-22=x^2/(2.00-x). The value of K is very small so you can assume that x is also very small and negligible. Therefore, you can assume 2.00 - x = 2.00 and solve. x^2 = 1.3*10^-22/2.00 and then take the square root and get 8.1*10^-12. You can find that x is indeed very small. You can check by subtracting 8.1*10^12 from x. In the end, it would still be 2.00 after you round it to the right number of significant figures.

OK i'm confused: at 4:24, there is the example of the equlibrium equation, where if H2 is increased then either CO3 in water must decrease OR the the H2C03 must increase sureley (i.e the reaction is pushed to the left!?). But the animation shows the H2CO3 bubble gets smaller!? am I going insane? or is crashcourse sending me insane?? ;)
@gtd376510 жыл бұрын
I believe the CO3(2-) gets larger due to being pushed to the right. The Carbonic acid concentration (H2CO3) needs to be raised due to H+'s concentration being high. Basically, they use up the H2CO3 to create more CO3(2-) to balance out the H+ ions. They should have shown CO2 decreasing though to make it clearer.

Thank you so much for these videos!
@uimasterskill11 жыл бұрын
Pardon me if I understood this wrong, but I hope somebody can tell me what is correct: Hank says in this video as well as the previous one that equilibrium is when the forward reaction happens at the same rate as the backwards reaction. But as far as I learned, those two rates don't have to be equal, they just have to be CONSTANT (for instance you could have much more reactants turning into products than products turning into reactants but it would still be an equilibrium reaction). Thank you!
