Well, yeah. Everyone thinks that America did good things for the Philippines, and they did. But they did a lot of horrible things too. And we're still feeling the effects of those actions today. I wonder how many Americans realize that the Benevolent Assimilation is a big, fat lie and that the Spanish and Americans didn't even bother to let a Filipino representative in during the negotiation for the Treaty of Paris (in which America basically bought the country).

Luckily the Philippines have forgiven us, and in-fact, they are the US biggest 'supporter' now meaning they consistently favor us about 90% while our other close allies give us anywhere between 50-60% including the UK, Israel, Etc.

But then again not many people are educated about the things the US did when we were under their control, since more attention is paid to the Spanish colonial period (333 years compared to about 40 for US). And people get really riled up when the US refuses to let GIs stand trial for crimes they committed on Philippine soil. So the US might not be as highly approved as you think.

LaxGoalieWestPoint So am I, but I'm also highly skeptical of the US' policies pre-WWII and even beyond. Did you know that the Americans replace the fiesta with "Hygeia" because the fiesta is apparently "unsanitary"? And did you know that they still refuse to acknowledge that the Hukbalahap was part of the anti-Japanese forces during WWII? Or that they made kids build toilets as part of compulsory education? Or that after the occupation US was demanding parity rights, ie being able to own land in the Philippines? You probably don't. In fact, I wouldn't have learnt of this had I not had a history professor with a penchant of turning history on its head. Before, I used to think that the US occupation was probably one of the best periods in Philippine history. Now, I'm certain that is not the case. Sure, they gave us public education and whatnot, but there's also a dark side most Filipinos don't know about.

Hi Crash Course! I have a one correction on your video. The first Philippine president is Emilio Aguinaldo (not Emiliano). Also, his surname is pronounced as A-GI-NAl-DO. Also, thanks for acknowledging the Filipino - American war. I knew the Philipines got a very raw deal from the US during that time, but I had no idea just how bad it was. As much as I love the dry humor in John Green's work, I especially like that he's not afraid to put the darkest parts of history on the table like this. Just a few corrections - It was Emilio Aguinaldo, not Emiliano. - Thanks for referring to the Philippine-American War as 'Philippine War' instead of the former term 'Philippine Insurgency' because the latter term implied that the country had no working independent government. - Many people do think that the Philippine-American War lasted until 1902 (not 1903), when the Americans declared the end of hostilities in the Philippines. However, if we are to add photos of the Battle of Bud Bagsak, then maybe we should count up to 1913.

Hi, I'd just like to point out that a lot of historians in the Philippines strongly believed that the battle in Manila Bay was a fake battle between the Spanish and Americans. If I remember correctly, the Americans already had an agreement with Spain to hold said battle in order to give the Americans some authority in saying that they mostly won the war in the Philippines, when actually, the Philippine revolutionaries had already been defeating the Spanish in the Islands, except in Manila, which I believe was the last foothold of the Spanish in the Philippines.

Spain's view to avoid the ignominy of defeat is a foreshadowing of the Battle of Manila Bay. Philippine historians cite that the battle was just a "play" of sorts so Spain could save face after they "sold" their interests in the Philippines to the United States of America since they know for a fact they can't win.
